19 year old missing.

ImNotGivingAwayMyShot · 18/06/2024 22:38

I haven't seen any posts on this although I may have missed it.

A 19 year old boy has gone missing while on holiday with friends in Tenerife. No phone battery and has not been heard from since 8am yesterday.

I cannot stop thinking about him and his family. I have a son the same age who was due to go abroad with his friends for the first time last week but plans were cancelled last minute and now I feel like I never want him to go anywhere!

I'm not sure the point in me posting this as no one will know what has happened, I guess I just can't help thinking what if he was my son?

I am praying he is okay. My heart absolutely breaks for his Mum who has traveled there this morning.

"I had no idea about the gofundme. Jesus, anyone who travels without insurance is crazy. It's so cheap as well"

I agree @VintageBagoriginally it doesn't cost much to buy but omg the difference it can make is incredible. I was away with a parent who had a sudden illness and then death and the costs would've been impossible if it weren't for the insurance. It's not worth the risk.

"Oh shut up, I didn't even give any kind of opinion.

But now I will. Do you honestly think a working class immigrant family approves of violent behaviour from British teens? Or are they also snobby middle classers? As someone brought up in the above, gang members and the like were looked down on."

No, you shut up @BeefBrisket. You did give an opinion. You declared that it's not a matter of class. IT FUCKING IS. The way the threads turned instantly into such a classist spectacle filled with an insane amount of mocking for the lad AND his family with not a single tinge of empathy shows that these attitudes always bubbling under the the surface waiting for an excuse.
As for your question. Wtf has that got to do with anything I've said? How does it relate? Like I said, working class Brits don't approve of that behaviour either, we are perfectly fucking capable of being decent human beings. I couldn't care less what an immigrant family thinks to themselves tbh or you or anyone else on the thread. I care about the insidious spiteful attitude towards people in deprived areas that no one would dare display so openly if it were about any other group of people.

I think this has become a circus like the thread that had to be deleted. I can pick out class and swear words I can't read the actual post.
A young man is missing. In whatever circumstances missing this is not the place for that sort of discussion and language. You be ashamed

soupfiend · 22/06/2024 15:05

Who said anything about him being from a deprived area? Is he?

I only have read about his criminal history and the dubious gofundme

A thread about a missing person has descended once again into bitching and slagging people off.

The human race sucks.

True.

There is a very high proportion of them on MN.

Yes, it's cheap, you know that, I know that but if you're brought in an environment where you don't see travel insurance being bought you won't think to buy it. They don't go without because they don't have a tenner for a week in the sun, its not on their radar

soupfiend · 22/06/2024 15:17

It probably wont apply to a young man like this but my travel insurance is 170 quid for a year, that isnt cheap. Although it would obviously be cheaper if it was just one holiday perhaps

His would probably be very cheap unless he has complex health needs perhaps.

Zonder · 22/06/2024 08:34

There's a Go Fund Me to raise money to get him home, if anyone needs an outlet for their compassion. Although I'm not sure how the £25k raised so far will bring him home if they don't know where he is.

Apparently that’s been closed and the money is being refunded so just wtf is going on?

I'm not reading your angry reply and instead will assume that youre that kind of mother of a certain kind of son.

Why on earth are you so upset by me saying that I don't think people's opinions of this young man are to do with class, and are based on his criminal history instead.

It's a Saturday. Breathe some fresh air and come back calmly.

It's still available to donate to and about £3k from the target

I just checked and it's definitely still open for donations ATM

And I've no idea who Rachel Louise Harg is, but according to the Independent she's explained that "a GoFundMe page, which has raised more than £26,000 will go towards family and friends staying in Tenerife while the hunt continues"

In what way? The McCanns have endured endless vitriol.

I'm in my early 30's and mine is less than £50 a year, multiple trips! No underlying health conditions.
No excuses for no travel insurance.

Some people wouldn't even understand the concept.

Same ones as think car insurance is £500 for a bit of paper.

Lol, the criticism (quite rightly) was relentless, there were whole forums dedicated to the situation for gods sake

Wrong example to use.

What a disgusting post.

Explain further, what is that kind of mother with a certain type of son?

I really, really hope your words don’t come back to bite you on the arse in future. Children of overbearing, nasty, judgemental mothers have a habit of going off the rails too you know…

Not really. I’m saying they came in for the same scrutiny

ApothecaryRose · 22/06/2024 16:28

The two men he stayed with (British I believe) have stayed out of the public eye. Wonder if they have form.

Sweetenuf · 22/06/2024 16:29

. I care about the insidious spiteful attitude towards people in deprived areas that no one would dare display so openly if it were about any other group of people.

Plenty of evidence of uncaring attitudes towards young people and even children from black, Muslim and other minority communities who have suffered various injustices, so not sure why you’re insinuating it’s somewhat unique for people to be (in your eyes) spiteful towards a particular group when the person in question happens to be (presumed) working class.

ApothecaryRose · 22/06/2024 16:28

I don’t blame them.

They don’t want the online detectives leaping to make wild accusations. The thing is once your name has been implicated in an ongoing investigation that dirt sticks even after it’s been proven you had nothing to do with it. It’s better for them if they can at least keep their heads down until he is found and the “mystery” is solved.

No good would come of them adding their voice to what is becoming a bit of a media circus.

If the timeline is correct, they weren’t even the last people to see or speak to the young man.

AquaFurball · 22/06/2024 16:52

Big contrast to this missing man compared to the missing Scottish man last year who the Spanish police didn't even bother to look for until he'd been missing a week, there was even CCTV footage. They couldn't identify the man he was last seen with.

Wasn't all over every news site, no crowd funder to help his family to go search for him. They've been told the case is now closed while this is going on.

Everyone deserves proper investigation, Gary Shearer deserved as much effort as they are putting into Jay Slater.

SocoBateVira · 22/06/2024 16:53

Trulickun · 22/06/2024 14:43

"However, the presence of classism on both MN generally and threads about Jay Slater specifically are not a reason for those of us who live in more deprived communities to have our say. And mine is extremely sincere, I can assure you. Some of us just aren't that fussed about extending any class solidarity to people with machete habits."

Now tell me where I said that those of us in deprived areas couldn't share our opinions? I happily shared my opinion despite being from a deprived area, I don't believe you are though. You think you can use it as a badge to excuse your attitudes. The fact that you couldn't understand that my point wasn't about having class solidarity with machete wielding thugs and more about the exuberant classism on display tells me you're lying.

Lmao who the fuck appointed you the arbiter of working class on mumsnet? The arrogance is just unbelievable. You start off with lectures, then when someone else from a deprived area has the temerity to say something you don't agree with, clearly the only explanation must be that they're lying rather than simply that you're wrong. Vile.

If you can believe anything in this strange take she is the mum of the lad Jay went on holiday with
