19 year old missing.

I haven't seen any posts on this although I may have missed it.

A 19 year old boy has gone missing while on holiday with friends in Tenerife. No phone battery and has not been heard from since 8am yesterday.

I cannot stop thinking about him and his family. I have a son the same age who was due to go abroad with his friends for the first time last week but plans were cancelled last minute and now I feel like I never want him to go anywhere!

I'm not sure the point in me posting this as no one will know what has happened, I guess I just can't help thinking what if he was my son?

I am praying he is okay. My heart absolutely breaks for his Mum who has traveled there this morning.

If they wanted to raise funds to find him they should have started a fundraising page for the Tenerife search and rescue.

I presume the lad had travel insurance which would cover repatriation. So why start a fundraiser?

Edited

That's quite the presumption, I'd assume that travel insurance isn't the norm for the teenage rave demographic and be pleasantly surprised if he did

@BeefBrisket and @SocoBateVira so fucking insincere. Yes it is a matter of class. I have always lived on council estates in deprived areas and of course nasty little shits are unpopular. It's got fuck all to do with the very obvious bubbling undercurrent of classism on these threads. The glee at the opportunity spew your nasty little opinions and use that word.

Don't pretend that this site isn't very middle class and that chav/chavvy isn't used constantly as a descriptor for whatever MNers see as beneath them socially.

The other thread that was deleted had some ridiculously middle class posts from people who never go for so much as a stroll without 3 day ration packs, emergency flares and crampons and people who simply can't understand anyone behaving in a way that's different to them

Nothing in my post made even the slightest suggestion that MN isn't overwhelmingly middle class. It's your own fault if you read in something that wasn't there.

However, the presence of classism on both MN generally and threads about Jay Slater specifically are not a reason for those of us who live in more deprived communities to have our say. And mine is extremely sincere, I can assure you. Some of us just aren't that fussed about extending any class solidarity to people with machete habits.

Oh shut up, I didn't even give any kind of opinion.

But now I will. Do you honestly think a working class immigrant family approves of violent behaviour from British teens? Or are they also snobby middle classers? As someone brought up in the above, gang members and the like were looked down on.

Bumblebeeinatree · 22/06/2024 11:05

I know he was part of a gang when he was quite a young teenager, I don't know what role he played in that attack, whether he had the machete or if he was one of the ones watching. I don't know if he went on to do other illegal stuff or whether he got out. He is claimed to be an apprentice bricklayer, again I don't know if that is true. I'm trying to give him a bit of the benefit of the doubt.

NorthernGirlie · 22/06/2024 11:07

I've gone down an absolute rabbit hole reading into all of this. My armchair detective theories include

-Drugs stuff gone wrong - pissed off the wrong people

-Seaton Carew Canoe rehash

SocoBateVira · 22/06/2024 10:12

Perish the thought that some of us who have been less than complimentary towards Jay Slater might be just a little chavvy ourselves. People like that are often not very popular in the working class communities that have to put up with them.

Absolutely

ApothecaryRose · 22/06/2024 11:32

Not sure why my comment on travel insurance has caused such outrage/suspicion 🙄. My 18 yo son has just gone on holiday to Spain. They all took out travel insurance.

ApothecaryRose · 22/06/2024 11:34

A thread about a missing person has descended once again into bitching and slagging people off.

The human race sucks.

oakleaffy · 22/06/2024 11:56

Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/06/2024 10:09

I think assuming he had travel insurance is a big leap

So do I, @Bromptotoo, which is another reason I suggested that presuming might be unwise

And yes, that's a valid point about exclusions if someone's drunk or drugged ...

Typo

Edited

When DS went to NZ and Canada for a year out working, he had to have specific Downhill Mountain Biking insurance that covered for a “risky activity”

Any accidents resulting from intoxication were excluded.

Very wise.
My neighbour needed repatriation after an unexpected illness on a ship off Spain - that was in the days of the e111- but he still had insurance- Just as well!

Wonderful medical care over there.

The human race who condems humans who cracks open a teenagers skull with an axe and machete you mean?

And the teenager with a cracked skull had robbed an old lady and other crimes- Deeply cowardly and unpleasant behaviour.

Most young men have better morals and manners - No matter what their social backgrounds.

Yes the lad doesn't seem like a nice person at all.

I was accused that by mentioning travel insurance I was having a dig at "chavvy types".

Crazy extrapolation.

novocaine4thesoul · 22/06/2024 13:21

@sammylady37 agreed google pin can be very helpful too, but if you are trying to tell someone you don't normally communicate with where you are (e.g. you are on the phone to the emergency services and you are not simply messaging someone you know) you can say the three words and they will find you - whereas it is harder to communicate a picture of a google pin with a stranger whose phone number you will not have. Plus it is the accuracy, if you drop a pin in, say, the metro centre, it sometimes drops it randomly or in the middle - which can be very difficult if the building is large and there are multiple exits - whereas w3w narrows it down to 3m of the person so you should be able to see them at this distance. That said, agree with @user1492771818 if they mishear the words, it could be misleading, and it isn't used everywhere - but UK emergency services are on it and it is worth having. Both things are better than nothing I guess, especially if your DC is protective of their privacy around stuff like find my iphone or snapchat location.

I'm going to out on a limb and say that your family is not the same as the family in question. You must know that people live all kinds of different lives and a lot of those don't involve travel insurance. You must know that ever summer there are gofundmes for medical treatment for holiday makers

I had no idea about the gofundme. Jesus, anyone who travels without insurance is crazy. It's so cheap as well

gojumpjump · 22/06/2024 14:40

Has anyone else seen it reported the mother spent 8 hours in the police station? Is that normal protocol?

Now tell me where I said that those of us in deprived areas couldn't share our opinions? I happily shared my opinion despite being from a deprived area, I don't believe you are though. You think you can use it as a badge to excuse your attitudes. The fact that you couldn't understand that my point wasn't about having class solidarity with machete wielding thugs and more about the exuberant classism on display tells me you're lying.

Info on why what3words isn't always the best system to use.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-57156797

Yes I've seen it used (in non emergency scenarios) and people ending up at entirely the wrong place due to a typo/mispronunciation

No, you shut up @BeefBrisket. You did give an opinion. You declared that it's not a matter of class. IT FUCKING IS. The way the threads turned instantly into such a classist spectacle filled with an insane amount of mocking for the lad AND his family with not a single tinge of empathy shows that these attitudes always bubbling under the the surface waiting for an excuse.
As for your question. Wtf has that got to do with anything I've said? How does it relate? Like I said, working class Brits don't approve of that behaviour either, we are perfectly fucking capable of being decent human beings. I couldn't care less what an immigrant family thinks to themselves tbh or you or anyone else on the thread. I care about the insidious spiteful attitude towards people in deprived areas that no one would dare display so openly if it were about any other group of people.
