19 year old missing.

I haven't seen any posts on this although I may have missed it.

A 19 year old boy has gone missing while on holiday with friends in Tenerife. No phone battery and has not been heard from since 8am yesterday.

I cannot stop thinking about him and his family. I have a son the same age who was due to go abroad with his friends for the first time last week but plans were cancelled last minute and now I feel like I never want him to go anywhere!

I'm not sure the point in me posting this as no one will know what has happened, I guess I just can't help thinking what if he was my son?

I am praying he is okay. My heart absolutely breaks for his Mum who has traveled there this morning.

Come on, people can't genuinely believe that the posters calling out classism on these threads are the ones that think that "scumbags come exclusively from the working class".
It's the fact that these posts are being coupled with "chav" "you what mate" "innit" ..that sort of thing and the attitude that implies low intelligence and ignorance.
Is it faux naivety? Because lots of us are acutely aware of this attitude directed at us regularly as working class people. Of course we know that working class people aren't all the same and that we're not all thugs and wrong'uns ..but we also know that there is a stereotype imposed on people from certain areas and walks of life.

rewarrrrd · 23/06/2024 12:07

Tbf this Jay person is a walking personification of the stereotype

ILikeALemonWedgeInMyGin · 23/06/2024 12:18

I wonder if he was kidnapped for organ harvesting

Yes maybe. But dehumanising someone, who for all they know is laying dead somewhere and mocking at the family/laughing at all the troll posts doesn't reflect well on the posters who were doing it.
I think they were in their little bubble having their little laugh and were most put out when other posters started pulling them up. Then started piling on and deflecting, throwing accusations and faux outrage that posters would dare bring class into it when a person is still missing. These threads turned into something really nasty.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 23/06/2024 12:29

Agree with a lot of that, @HerbertHoover, and especially this: "we also know that there is a stereotype imposed on people from certain areas and walks of life"

Admittedly stereotypes exist for a reason, but for me at least the fault arises when folk start tarring everyone with the same brush, forgetting that the "working class" are the ones who actually built this country, that many hold even more of the traditional morals which go with that massive contribution, and that many detest criminals even more than others

Maybe what we actually need, if we must refer to classes at all, is a different name for the type we're really referring to here. Trouble is, "underclass" is the one generally used and that's not popular either

BabyBobs · 23/06/2024 13:13

He has a conviction for being involved in violence and if he lives in a council house there is already a name for that stereotype.

That doesn't mean that everyone that lives in a council house is violent or anyone that is violent mud live in a council house, but it does conjure up the type of person that we all recognise.

The fake designer clothing, the haircuts, the manner of talking and the use of certain words etc.

Referring to someone as a posh twit is just as rude as calling someone a lowlife but it's only the term lowlife that gets people annoyed! 🤷🏼‍♀️

He will be found on the mountain today.

Do you know what time so I know when to check back?

MoonQuartz · 23/06/2024 14:29

Soon. The police are winding things down. They know what happened.

The go fund me fundraiser has reached the £30,000 total. The mother has posted an updated saying thanks etc, she also said to keep sharing the fundraiser 'far and wide'.

Why? What's the money for?

They're apparently covering the costs themselves thus far, so again, what's the money for?

No it's not faux naivety.

Classism would be calling regular hardworking people chavs because they li

Future holidays probably. They spotted an opportunity and took it is my guess.

Otherwise they would have said what it’s for but they don’t want to be transparent.

User20056 · 23/06/2024 16:13

Lived in a council house, or had a large fmaily or an accent.

People shouldn't be calling this man a chav, just scroll on, really. But equally, I don't agree that it's classism in this case. Like someone else said 'posh twit' is an insult. Insults exist.

Completely agree.
I dislike that website most of the time anyway

Well there is a petition to get it closed down.

I won't be signing the petition or donating to the GFM though as we don't hace enough info either way.

Seriously ?!

Repatriation to the U.K? It’s not free. Accommodation costs, funeral, loving costs if they aren’t able to use leave for work, private investigators since the Tenerife police have said they don’t need U.K. help.

It’s an odd case, I don’t think it’ll have a good outcome.
So this is a dead child you discuss. Yes he did something vile, really vile. But he may have changed or not. Who knows, does it matter.

He needs to be found, for the future of tourism and safety in Tenerife the Guardia look a bit inept at this point.. . To give his mother peace. The resources this must be using, the money.

The posts on SM are vile. Why don’t you google unit 731 and compare…

hungskir · 23/06/2024 17:55

Yes seriously. Currently there is no body to repatriate.

£30,000 is more than enough money so why have they still got it open, and asking for it to be shared.

A little bit more specific please, what does soon mean?

Garlicker · 23/06/2024 18:16

@HerbertHoover, you know it's not bigotry to note the effects of 'class' on someone's life, right? Refusing to acknowledge it is just as bad as 'not seeing colour' or answering DV threads with 'women do it too'. It would be bigoted to assume that all working-class teenagers were violent, drug-dealing grifters: has anyone done that here?

Some criminal behaviour patterns are linked to socio-economic groups - Cornish beaches get trashed by public-school kids, for instance. Working-class teens being failed by the myth of meritocracy is a well recognised issue.

I won't go on with this, it's a derailment. I may as well mention that the Canaries have become a massive hub for drugs & people trafficking (not being anti-Canarian or South American / Balkan / Italian / Moroccan - phobic!) which explains some of the sleazier theories being proposed around the Web.

If he is found dead I think it cost more than that to bring a body home, if he did not have insurance.

There was a young girl where I live who had an accident in Thailand and she didn’t have insurance. She (barely) survived but her poor parents had to raise close to £100 k to bring her home to a hospital here.
