Anyone else loving the weather?

I'm so enjoying the cooler than normal weather. I can spend more time in the garden without getting hot and sweaty. Love sleeping in a cool bed. Can go for nice long walks. Less noise from neighbours. Win. Win.

@ForGreyKoala Go on, keep ranting.. you might warm up a bit ♥️

I'm not in the UK - but it isn't much colder here in winter than your summer is, and we certainly aren't getting nearly as much rain. Still, all the miserable people on MN seem to be enjoying it. I'm just sending a bit of solidarity to those who don't.

I've never known people who appear to love cold, wet, weather as many in the UK do. Thank goodness most people here actually like summer, and we don't melt into a puddle, or have to hide away indoors, when the temperature gets to over 20.

I hope you enjoy all those price increases when the crops fail!

RampantIvy · 16/06/2024 08:44

Judging from the hot weather hating posts I read on MN I suspect that most of these posters are very introverted and don't like going outside very much. There is a much higher proportion of of this type on mumsnet than in real life.

I don't mind the odd cool or wet day, but we have had 12 months of this with the odd week or few days. A lot of people will be taking a financial and mental health hit.

I will reiterate that some nice warm and dry weather isn't just something that would be appreciated by most people it is very much needed. Notice I said warm, not hot.

For a those wet weather loving people, spare a thought for farmers. It's not about not enjoying the weather it is having an impact on their livelihoods. So much so DEFRA have grants now (it was the wettest 6 months in years). But you carry on with splashing in puddles and putting a raincoat on for a walk, snuggling under a blanket and enjoy being wrapped up but it won't put food on your table.

UK farmers consider quitting after extreme wet weather and low profits

I love cooler weather but I do want to see some sun now please (anything up to about 28 degrees). Thanks!

VintageBrass · 16/06/2024 08:57

People have got too used to abnormal overly hot and dry summers. What we are having now is just normal weather.

People can keep pretending all they like that this constant torrential rain, high winds and stupidly cold temperatures are normal but no amount of repeating this will make it true. Hmm

It really isn't.

You can say June is always this wet, windy and cold but that doesn't mean it's true.

No. It really is not normal, however much you may wish it to be. Perhaps you live in an area with a microclimate where it hasn't rained as much as everywhere else in the UK and parts of northern France and Germany, but it has been constantly reported on the news and weather reports that this has been the longest spell of wet weather for many years, and in some areas, ever.

This weather is definitely going to affect all of our pockets whether you deny it or not.

VintageBrass · 16/06/2024 09:30

BBC

"Last year we saw the warmest June on record and we've recently had the warmest May and spring on record for the UK too.

Weather varies a lot in the UK, so cooler periods like this are still considered to be 'normal'.
We need to wait until the month is over and the statistics have been studied to see if the weather in June 2024 has been 'normal' or not."

The "warmest... on record" come from night time temperatures, not daytime ones.

It's barely warmed up during the day.

Plus, anyone halfway educated can work out that damp + "warm" (i.e. not freezing overnight) leads to more rot. Hence fewer crops, more structural damage.

It's not normal. I live in Cumbria and have done for 15 years. I don't remember needing heating on in June before now. Up here May and June are normally dry and pleasant. Not hot, but pleasant. July and August tend to be wet but still warm. This is just awful.

Exactly.

The OP here seems on the wind up to me. They are apparently 'astonished' that people have their heating on. Not just mildy surprised, but astonished.

They also either joined MN specifically to start this post, or name changed to do so.

Here’s some “normal” summer weather from before climate change was a twinkle in Greta Thunberg’s great great great grandfather’s eye…

Hilarious now irrate and over the top people get on a harmless thread about the weather. It's gone straight to zombie apocalypse mode. We are all dooommmmed. 😂

You are either trying to wind people up or are just an idiot.

No way is the weather we are having now normal for June. My birthday and wedding anniversary are both in June and we always either go out for those days or go away (in the UK). Some years the weather has not been great but it has never been so wet and cold.

I still have the heating on in the morning and evening because I refuse to be cold whether it is December or June. Thankfully we can afford it but it still annoys the hell out of me

June can often be disappointing, with June being one of the wetter months where I live. However, the rain we have had so far this month is way above what is normal for here. It is also much cooler than normal.

VintageBrass · 16/06/2024 10:59

Not trying to wind anyone up🙄. I'm genuinely liking the cooler weather. I live in the SE and absolutely hated the 35-40oC heat of last year.

Why do people have to look for the worst in folk?

Honestly this forum has gone to the dogs.👋

But it is NOT just cool. It is bloody cold. Maybe it's not where you are but it certainly is in most of the UK.

Not sure anyone is wanting 35 to 40 degree heat. I certainly am not but some days of over 20 would be great.

Also as much as I hated the very hot days last year, they literally lasted days. The rain, the cold, the grey, the wind have all lasted months and months and months. Since last summer in fact (well supposed summer)

It's 16 here now but feels much hotter in the sun. Cloud cover keeps pretending to come over but then vanishing again. DD just crawled under her rain coat and complained it was too hot. She's a child after my own heart!

I forgot my sunglasses and am fed up squinting into the sun. We're out watching DS play cricket. Makes me tense already that there probably is much hotter to come

You are either really ignorant or deliberately on a wind up. This is not normal weather, when DEFRA make adjustments and say it's been the wettest 6 months for farmers, and farmers are considering leaving their industry, haven't been able to plant crops for the first time in years. You go on about loving this weather and saying it's not that bad. Seriously!

10% chance of rain where we live - well showers - rained twice, hard

totmorrow looks like the best day in weeks!!

Worryingly, its the longest day soon!! :(

We are looking for short breaks on the south coast, weekdays but the weather is awful so delaying and delaying!!!

sanityisamyth · 16/06/2024 11:29

Yes. I'm loving the weather which is only marginally warmer than the fucking shit that we have had since November. I love having 8 months of the year in hoodies, long trousers, trainers, coats rather than just being able to walk around in t-shirts, shorts and flip flops. I love having to mow and strim the garden because it keeps raining and is warm enough for the grass to grow but not enough, or predictable enough, to actually go and enjoy it. I love still having to have the heating on in the car to stop the windows steaming up. I love still having to use the tumble drier because my clothes are soaked every time I go out and it keeps fucking raining so I can't dry them on the line. Summer is only very short. You can enjoy rain and cold in the spring, summer and autumn. Stop gleefully pissing on all our chips for the few months a year that others might actually enjoy.

It's pissing it down again here. I think I'm at the point where I'd genuinely consider commiting a crime if it would guarantee me some dry weather.

Currently sulking under the heated blanket, trying to warm up befire the next round of going outdoors into Junuary.

I was wearing thermal leggings too.
