Intimate photos on Mumsnet

Does anyone else find this concerning? My GP practise doesn't even allow genital pictures to be sent to them because of confidentiality and security.

I am also very concerned that there is a possibility of an alternative reasons these are being posted. Lots of posters have previously responded to these photos defending them by stating we should be allowed to ask women if we have problems that affect women. However as we are all well aware there are abusive men/women in the world. How do we know that the poster hasn't been forced to post these pictures or they have been posted without their consent? Without being too explicit there is also the concern of how old the actual person in the photo is.

Does anyone else think this or do you think posting intimate photos on a predominately woman's site justified?

Eww someone posted a pic of their arsehole?

I hope it came with a warning 😬😂

I thought it was a trailer for Dune 2.

I mean it’s not something I would do but it’s a random body part, anonymously. It doesn’t really bother me if it means people get the help they might not otherwise get in a medical sense.

This!

I have to admit I do find it slightly odd. I'm not prudish at all but just can't understand the thought process behind someone sharing close up of their arsehole or vagina on Mumsnet! This isn't a medical site. The vast majority of us can't diagnosis or treat someone's intimate health problems.
Yes it can take a while to get a doctors appointment but problems such as these (it was suspected piles in this case) are hardly life threatening! You can wait a couple of weeks to show a medical professional rather than sharing the image with thousands of complete strangers.

I don’t find pictures of arseholes offensive at all but I also don’t think people should post them. I think a lot of people are lulled into a false sense of security on here and see it as a smallish group of largely benevolent women. In fact, there are millions of users including all sorts of wrong’uns, bots downloading images, you name it.

What’s more, MN doesn’t have the best reputation for data security and yet it now holds extremely intimate images of people which are linked to their email addresses. I’d be worried about this if I were MN from a GDPR perspective and this alone would justify a ban on the images.
Add to this the possibility that images might be posted without consent (by a user only pretending to be the subject) and it’s a bit of a disaster waiting to happen, legally.

The Corpus threads on Site Stuff are now very long, but have various new and concerning layers of relevance to all the points above. Related to at least one university that is upholding a researcher's intent to use material taken from a scraped corpus composed of forum posts (whether or not the original posts are removed from the forum subsequently, for whatever reason) for the core point of their thesis.

DullFanFiction · 12/06/2024 13:05

@Ormally if this is the case I’m thinking about (where the student used posts from Reddit), this was not about photos posted etc…

I know there is one london uni looking for a PhD student to review YouTube videos linked to a specific disease to ‘prove’ you can cure it atm too.

But basically anything from this forum and other SM can be used to do studies like this.
You would be very naive to think this mine if information isn’t used. Either for research (even though on ethical grounds, it shouldn’t happen) or for commercial/marketing reasons.

Ormally · 12/06/2024 13:32

@DullFanFiction It might be the same, but my initial reaction is that it is different. It's not especially about photos posted, but (at least in its early proposed stage, future to be decided) it appeared to include analysis to compare language and features of posts from different parts of the forum that are either clearly by the same poster, or have sufficient features in common to be possibly by the same poster. Some of the data scraped was from topic areas that hinged on very sensitive topics and people who could be vulnerable (think Debt etc, though not that one) - one of the topics centred on children (of varying ages), who - in my view at least - could be vulnerable enough from adding up the descriptions posters used, but who are probably not one and the same person as the poster themselves.

How do you even take a photo of your arsehole?

Just asking for a friend

Edited

Timer, prop phone up

(I had to take a pic of my back for the doctor and live alone...)

Is Mumsnet really reliable for medical advice though?

Singleandproud · 14/11/2024 00:32

There have been several data breaches on MN and whilst your username maybe anonymous many emails used to sign up are not and have been leaked beforematched to the username (Joffrey 😡) so posting photos or comments to things really aren't as anonymous as people think.
