I think it is incredibly sad that he was so close to safety when he succumbed. A few dozen more metres and he would have had access to help, refreshment, the sea to cool off in.

In a way it makes it more tragic than being found in the middle of nowhere. Those of us pointing it out aren't wrong to feel sad about that.

So many assumptions.
He could have had a catastrophic heart attack or severe stroke. Nearness to help, refreshments, etc., could have been of no importance. Could have tripped over uneven ground (says the person who slipped on gravel and broke her wrist) and hit his head. Dozens of different explanations. Heat exhaustion is only one possibiity.

He went for a walk as millions of people do every day, and something went wrong.

Oh sounds horrible.
What's the main way prevent it when out for the day in the sun?

Edited

You can't do much except get out of the sun. This is why hundreds have died in India this summer because they had no option but to be out in the heat.

GreatOcean · 09/06/2024 11:29

Sunnyandsilly · 09/06/2024 11:07

There is every doubt. This could easily have been a heart attack.

I thought that initially, but after seeing the location of where he was found, being lost (who knows how far he had walked, could have been hiking for hours being lost) and dying of heatstoke is a more likely explanation given the environment.

I know being holier than thou is a popular competition on here but this is an on line forum. They’re showing the pixilated body all over mainstream TV so commenting and discussing on here is hardly worth some getting all het up over!

I wasn't referring to mumnset posters I was thinking more along the lines of the behaviour of some people (mainly on facebook) during the search for Nicola Bulley

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 09/06/2024 11:30

I was at cricket in the UK. Just sitting watching cricket in hot sun. I stupidly decided to drink a hot drink and I think that's what tipped my body over the edge as I then passed out.

I would say the best way to prevent it is to stay out of direct sunlight but if you're in it with no shade, heading for the nearest civilisation would be the best thing to do and it appears that this is what he was attempting to do. Obviously nobody knows. But if hr had a sudden heart attack, it is still correct to say that another 30 metres would have put him in a better place to be discovered/ seen.

Aquarius1234 · 09/06/2024 11:32

Yea of course I try to find any shade spots if possible. Always walk shaded side of pavement.
But when no shade I guess it's good to look at how long you have been out for.

Not sure why they needed to go back to the cafe and re watch the footage and zoom in.
Can't have been far to just go and look there and then. Already on the boat etc

Possibly to download it into a larger screen?
Or to be able to view it out if the sun so the screen was more clear?

Regardless, they'd need to have come back anyway.

GreatOcean · 09/06/2024 11:36

In Death Valley there are warnings everywhere about heatstroke with reminders to carry water etc, I wonder if this needs to be more widespread to get people to truly understand the dangers of extreme heat.

Longma · 09/06/2024 11:38

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 09/06/2024 11:25

I have experienced heatstroke. It comes on really suddenly. One minute you're ok and the next you're fainting. I struggled to walk a few metres to get water to cool off. I couldn't have shouted in that state. I could barely stay conscious.

When dh was bad;y affected by the sun/heat he quickly became almost out of it despite being awake and moving. It was like he was delirious, or verging on it, until he had had chance to cool down, drink and rest for a length of time.

Aquarius1234 · 09/06/2024 11:38

UK has had severe heatwaves in recent years and everyone knows to stay inside as much as you possibly can. Don't think we need telling that stuff.

OP posts:
Longma · 09/06/2024 11:40

But in holiday people DO stay out in the sun and heat far longer than they would ordinarily do so. And they can get caught out as a result.

No one plans to get heatstroke,

A lot on these threads seem to think a walk in 45c heat across rugged terrain with limited water is a normal holiday activity so I actually do think people need telling 🤦🏽‍♀️

WriterOfWrongs · 09/06/2024 11:41

RIP. As well as of course his family, I feel extremely sorry for the friends he was staying with. How traumatic for them.

This is a very shortsighted view. Many many people do need reminding about these things. You underestimate what a huge amount of the UK population thinks about sun and heat, they would happily bake in it all day for a tan and not think about health issues.

Please have some respect snd wait till the results of the autopsy before proclaiming the cause.

Who was walking in 45 degree heat then?

The cause is irrelevant to some extent his actions weren’t sensible and that’s what’s being commented on walking in heat of that extent when not acclimatised.

Aquarius1234 · 09/06/2024 11:44

I guess some people don't care. Like smoking.
Would you rather be too cold or too hot.
Cold for me.

He was it’s all over news. Reported temperatures are in shade real feel in sun plus humidity.

It probably does need to be more widespread but in terms of this situation, MM would have known about the dangers as a doctor, someone in tune with how bodies function and someone who formerly had diabetes/pre-diabetes (the heat is especially dangerous then).

Many people on these threads saying their very intelligent DHs would do something similar ie go for a walk in high heat, being (over) confident in their abilities and that the heat wouldn’t affect them. Hopefully they may think twice now.

I agree with this. We're just not used to these kinds of temperatures. I find anything over 30 degrees unpleasant. It's easy to think 40 degrees is just horrible rather than how dangerous it can become very quickly.

LindorDoubleChoc · 09/06/2024 11:50

What an odd post on Twitter? She "didn't know who to report it to" - how incredibly dense. I really hope that's fake.

DownWithThisKindOfThing · 09/06/2024 11:51

Such sad news, I think like most people deep down I knew this would be the outcome but I couldn’t help holding onto hope he was sheltering somewhere and would be found alive.

This probably sounds stupid but after seeing the CCTV of him walking with his umbrella, reading that the umbrella was found close by too just seems to make it somehow more poignant.

My thoughts are with his family but at least they will have some closure as he’s been found x

Then start a thread of your own to discuss this away from the subject matter of this poor man and his family, as it is inappropriate on this one.
