Body found and identified.

It’s awful for the family.

I find it so upsetting partly because, unlike all the previous “well I wouldn’t have…” posters, I can see exactly how I, or someone else, would have done something like this. So easy to think you’re not far, you’re pretty fit, you just want to get back instead of sitting around waiting for a bus, it’s only over that hill…honestly I’d 100% have set off confidently and then realised I’d made a stupid decision. Also an intelligent, fairly fit, fairly stubborn person.

montelbano · 09/06/2024 10:53

A very sad and tragic end for a lovely, kind, intelligent man. May his family find peace and take pride in knowing he was respected by so many.

Simple mistakes are easy to accumulate if you are impaired in someway (it's interesting how people react to hypothermia too - your brain tells you, you are too hot. There's cases of mountaineers stripping and/or walking off cliffs in a state of cognitive confusion).

Could be a stroke. Could be a fall.

Given that one of the effects of heat stroke is dizziness and confusion it could affect your decision making.

But it is likely that heat was a factor.

If that's the case then his legacy also is about awareness of the risk of heat.

GameOfJones · 09/06/2024 10:53

Although I'd been bracing myself for this news, I had a little cry this morning when it was announced.

His books and podcasts helped me so much. Listening to Just One Thing has been a feature of my everyday life and there are steps that I have taken to improve my health that I credit to him. I'm not the only one, he will leave a legacy.

It is just unbearably unfair that he has dedicated his life to keeping healthy and helping other people try and live longer and then has died in an accident on holiday.

I sincerely hope it was very quick, just a slip and hit his head or something to bring some comfort to his family that he didn't suffer at the end.

RIP.

Redflagman · 09/06/2024 10:55

Can we stop the in fighting? Please. The body is yet to be identified, someone's loved one has passed away. Does it matter how it happened? Where it happened? When the body was discovered ?

Have some respect.

RIP whoever it is, although more than likely Michael. His books really helped me and transformed my health and my life. I feel so sorry for his wife of over 35 years and his children.

SheerLucks · 09/06/2024 10:56

The body has sadly now been identified.

GreatOcean · 09/06/2024 10:56

I've just seen the map of his route and where the body was found - there's no doubt he got lost and died of heat exhaustion.

How utterly tragic 😞 if that fence wasn't there he would have survived!!

Aquarius1234 · 09/06/2024 10:57

I believe he would have known exactly how hot it was sense the umbrella.

BBC news are reporting 'The body was found next to a fence, about 30 metres from the beach, and would have been visible from the beach'.

Feels unreal that he was so close by, not even off the beach and no-one noticed him?

Aquarius1234 · 09/06/2024 10:59

Being by a fence is kinda out of sight.

I don't think that's true. The fence is short and you can easily walk round it. He must have collapsed.

Erm actually it does matter.

If heat is a factor, yes it's very relevant. And a conversation which is worthwhile in terms of the health of others.

If it's a fall in a dangerous area you are unfamiliar with, it's relevant.

Etc etc.

This is why we have inquests to establish how and why someone has died, so we can learn lessons for the future and increase awareness of certain risks.

It is very much part of the notion of legacy. It might help save another person's life!

Discussion of possibilities (even if it's not the one that is relevant here) gives people information about other risks too. So yeah, I dont this it's inappropriate.

Aquarius1234 · 09/06/2024 11:01

Tourists eyes would only look at nice bits. I wouldn't go away and stare at the bins or corner of a fence or back of building.
Your eyes only see what you want them to see I mean.

Very sad news! My thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues. RIP 💔

Oaktree55 · 09/06/2024 11:02

Poor local journalist who’s in tears after being the one who effectively found him from the boat. Very strange drones and helicopter missed him given how often they’d been over that stretch (apparently). Perhaps as so close to that resort fence they assumed it was debris.

Yes, he seemed quite choked up.

Agree with @RedToothBrush it does matter. Future lessons can be learnt about heat and walking unfamiliar paths, our age, so many people would think this was an okay thing to do. Just a walk in the sunshine. But death can come easier than we think.

Same with Nicola Bulley.. I don't get close to the rivers edge now when walking my dog. I did before as I didn't think I'd die from a little fall into the shallow bit.

There is every doubt. This could easily have been a heart attack.

LakeTiticaca · 09/06/2024 11:08

Very sad but inevitable given the length of time. I just hope all.the "armchair detectives " don't start crawling out criticising the search teams for not doing this or that .
I hope his family are given privacy to grieve in peace

That's a consolation - so likely it was just too late by the time he reached the fence.

fairydust11 · 09/06/2024 11:08

Such very sad news.
My thoughts are with his family and friends.

TheLastTimeEver · 09/06/2024 11:08

Such humanity in the camera man who found him. So clear how much he wanted better news. Thank goodness he did find him.

Somuch · 09/06/2024 11:09

So sad, he had almost made it to safety. He must have been delirious coming over the top of that hill and seeing the beach and bar below. Just didn’t quite make it. How incredibly tragic.

Then start a thread of your own to discuss this away from the subject matter of this poor man and his family, as it is inappropriate on this one.
