@RedToothBrush good point but, in the absence of him having a map on him, I can't help but think having a phone on him might have resulted in a better outcome.

Just talking about how incidents happen because of a series of small failures rather than a single major one.

Hence planning for multiple eventualities and having multiple fail safes is the recommended way to plan if you go walking.

My point being there tends to be a desire to oversimplify and say if only he'd done this one thing. I don't know that thinking like that necessarily helps.

There is a tendacy not to realise how much trouble you are in until its too late and thats part of the problem.

AgnesChadwick · 09/06/2024 18:00

This is so incredibly sad (I'm sure the trolls will do the usual & berate me for this). Thoughts with his family and friends. He was a truly inspirational man.

wherehaveallthegoodfolkgone · 09/06/2024 18:06

Completely tragic ending. I honestly would have thought that the Mayor of the island would have instructed every single bar/club /cafe etc to review CCTV daily.
I doubt it would have saved Michael but I think it could have saved the family so much angst .

Christ0nABike · 09/06/2024 18:06

For those saying they’ll start taking their phone when they go out walking, can I also suggest you download and familiarise yourselves with the What Three Words app.
Absolutely invaluable if you’re in remote areas with few obvious landmarks.

Same goes for those driving in remote regions especially at night - my cousin was rescued after crashing through a hedge in the middle of nowhere, she was able to tell rescuers exactly where she was.

Christ0nABike · 09/06/2024 18:08

I can’t recall who the fella was who’s hiked all over Symi, does anyone still have the link for his account of taking the wrong path? I think it was above the exact place Michael was found?

SaltBlossom · 09/06/2024 18:10

@SallyWD thats not why the English are called the 'roast beef's' - it because they (some) insist on still having a full Sunday roast even when away in the forrin.

ducktapez · 09/06/2024 18:14

Good to see this thread reinstated.

That Daily Mail article stating he was sighted descending the mountain next to the beach bar at 3.44 is revealing. It means it took him 1 hour 45 minutes to get there from when he was last spotted on CCTV at Pedi marina. According to google the distance from Pedi marina to Agia Marina is 30 minutes, so he probably didnt take the direct route after all. Perhaps we'll never know what route he took and why he ended up where he did, which was as far from his villa as you could possibly get.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 09/06/2024 18:14

I doubt the CCTV was pointed towards the slope though - as in that wouldn't be the main focus of the shot - so it's more likely that he was in the background or the edge of the shot and you'd only know to look there once you knew where he'd ended up.

And for the person who told me I was thinking illogically and that he'd probably arrived there after dark - it was 3.44 in the afternoon - so I think it is tragic that he was so near and yet so far from safety.

I'm glad his family have taken comfort from it though.

I remembered Barry and the url was still in my history. I had obsessively saved this or anything.

Sure thing, see link below. Strangely enough the mix up described by Barry is possibly exactly what happened to MM, although it would appear MM was actually wanting to complete the circular route back to Horio (which i believe is another name for the town of Ayo Symi where he was staying). The question is why did he head down to that beach bar on the wrong side to the path people normally take down. It's unbelievably tragic, that he was so close yet so far to having a rest/water or whatever he needed.

Symi: getting it wrong

We have been coming to Symi and walking the mountains for over a decade.  I spent 3 months in the summer of 2010 on the island doing the research for writing a walking guide, which is unfortunately…

Absolutely spot on with this advice. Not enough people know about this App.

I was told by the locals it's specifically because we go so pink in the sun! Anyway, maybe there are two meanings and this has nothing to do with MM. I only mentioned in response to another poster who said we (as a nation) need to be more careful in the sun. I know many Brits are very careful indeed but others don't understand the risks. It's completely understandable as we're just not used to it.

greengreyblue · 09/06/2024 18:26

Yes What Three Words is a must. Trainer on a first aid course recommended it. She said valuable minutes are lost even just arriving at an office or school when not knowing the nearest entrance etc

greengreyblue · 09/06/2024 18:26

Roast beef’s is a French nickname for the English because of roast beef on Sundays.

It was coined in the 18th Century by the French to describe the English due to the way they cooked meat, originally 'rosbifs'. Napoleon was fond of using it.

Thank you. Yes, having read this the other day I would not be at all surprised if it’s the exact same route.

Just so sad that that CCTV wasn’t viewed earlier. I hope it wouldn’t have made any difference to the outcome, but it certainly would’ve prevented the expense of the searches and the prolonged heartache of the family.

Yes I'm sure you're right and I've heard this too - but my family live in a different country further south in Europe and they definitely use the term for sunburnt Brits. They've told me about it many times. It may have come from France originally but is used differently where my family lives.

greengreyblue · 09/06/2024 18:46

Roast beef is t pink though! Lobster is the term I use for sunburnt people.

ducktapez · 09/06/2024 18:46

@Christ0nABike

It's all a bit moot with the CCTV. The beach bar probably has cctv pointing in various directions and perhaps the one that covers the fence isnt one they'd think to check. After all it seems a totally strange route to approach the beach bar and they'd be more likely to check coverage of the path and sea area.

The Daily Mail has another article up saying this:

It is thought that he had managed to climb the slope from Pedi to the top of hill overlooking Agia Marina - but what is not clear is why he then decided to skirt the edge of the restaurant.
A more obvious route would be a signed path down to the restaurant, which looks on to a small island, before continuing the hike to Simi port.

Desperate five-day search for Dr Michael Mosley that ended in tragedy

It is now thought that Dr Mosley died less then two hours after leaving his wife from the beach on the Greek island of Symi last Wednesday at 1.30pm, before the discovery of his body five days later.

Not a conspiracy. Just an agreement by journalists not to publish the story until 9am today. Really not that unusual!

This is nonsense.

Christ0nABike · 09/06/2024 17:25

Very sad news, I hope he didn’t suffer.

I’m shocked there is footage of him falling though. They didn’t check CCTV before now?

Falling out of view doesn’t mean he fell , just means the camera could no longer pick him up - could have just sat down to rest etc

ducktapez · 09/06/2024 19:05

@CoastalCalm

I spotted this too and on closer inspection its down to a post by Redtoothbrush on page 13 of this thread, which was supposedly an excerpt from the Daily Mail which said:

In the footage, he is not seen to get up and a customer is shown walking past the kiosk who could potentially have heard had there been any shout for help.

However the Daily Mail article now just states this:
In the footage a customer is shown walking past the kiosk who could potentially have heard had there been any shout for help.

So more than likely a hasty edit by the DM. And "falling" out of view isn't the best use of words in this case.

It depends on how he felt and how far he was from the town. If he felt he could make it and overestimated his ability or he had a medical incident, it might not have made a difference.

I know that there are risks also associated with over reliance on your phone. Assuming that you will always have a signal and be able to get a map can go wrong, if you get lost and you don't have a signal. Reputable groups for activities which involve going somewhere for a walk, including scouts, stress the importance of having a physical map and an ability to read the land even in reduced visibility or at night for this very reason.

Its wise to have a phone, but its also wise to be aware of its limitations too.

I’ve seen what three words mentioned too . We have had occasion in the past where a child sent us a location that was completely wrong . He was at the top of the hill and the code we received was right at the bottom - about a 15 minute walk . The upside was he was trying to send us location of a frog he’d found !

PlacidPenelope · 09/06/2024 19:10

It is all so very sad, his family must be devastated and my thoughts are with them.

If anything good could come out of it I hope it is more awareness of the dangers of walking in extreme heat, and being in the heat generally, how quickly and unexpectedly you can suffer from heat exhaustion and how deadly it can be. The rule of thumb I go by in hot countries is Do as the locals do so if they are not out walking/hiking about in the heat of the day then it is a good idea for you not to be.

There is a very good reason they have long lunches and afternoon siestas in hot countries.
