Falling out of view doesn’t mean he fell , just means the camera could no longer pick him up - could have just sat down to rest etc

The wording about falling out of view is confusing. Agree it could mean that he just went out of the angle of the camera rather than anything more.

The spokesman for the coroner has said it's their early assumption that he had a fall however they don't know if he had a medical incident before hand which caused the fall.

This doesn't necessarily mean a fall from height though. The coroner also said that the his body had no obvious damage.

They have to do tests to establish more.

This sounds to me like he had a trip rather a fall from height from the wording but it's not entirely clear.

It is all so very sad, his family must be devastated and my thoughts are with them.

If anything good could come out of it I hope it is more awareness of the dangers of walking in extreme heat, and being in the heat generally, how quickly and unexpectedly you can suffer from heat exhaustion and how deadly it can be. The rule of thumb I go by in hot countries is Do as the locals do so if they are not out walking/hiking about in the heat of the day then it is a good idea for you not to be.

There is a very good reason they have long lunches and afternoon siestas in hot countries.

It's another of these really sad ironies.

In life he sought to lead by example and educate us by showing us issues with health and increased understanding. He's undoubtedly saved lives.

In death there is a situation where he may teach a lot of people a lot of important lessons which may help to save lives.

Rosejinkyb · 09/06/2024 19:21

There will be a coroners report which may or may not be public.

Stop speculating now, some of this is ridiculous projection.

vivainsomnia · 09/06/2024 19:22

I haven't seen it mentioned here but I'm sure I read somewhere in the news early this morning that the body was on one side of the fence and the umbrella the other side. This would hint that he would have tried to climb the fence.

ducktapez · 09/06/2024 19:26

It shows how useless those sniffer dogs are in this climate or perhaps just in general. Clearly MM took one of a couple of routes to that beach bar - he wasn't too far from the beaten track yet still wasnt found. Likewise the drones and helicopters. Can only guess that they didn't expect him to be so close to the boundary fence to that beach bar area. Hidden in plain sight by being so close to the wall rather than in open land.

The whole thing is a tragedy. So many bad factors came together all at once - the lack of comms to his party to tell them where he was going, the lack of a phone, the heatwave, the choice of walk, the place he fell ill or just fell, the fact he was so close to other people who could possibly have helped.

greengreyblue · 09/06/2024 19:31

You can buy dog paw protection quite easily here in U.K. Surely the Mediterranean countries are even more familiar!

Fraudornot · 09/06/2024 20:10

Anjelika · 09/06/2024 17:39

It is really tragic that he got so so near to help before collapsing. However, I can't help but think how different the outcome might have been if he'd just had his phone with him. He could have phoned his wife/friends to say he was in difficulty and the Police/Ambulance etc would have been able to locate him pretty easily through GPS. Similarly if he'd not had time to call them before succumbing to heatstroke or a heart attack the emergency services would have been able to locate him using GPS I imagine. It's certainly made me think twice about going anywhere without my phone.

Me too - I recently turned 60 and I consider myself really fit bit this has made me think I need my phone with me at any time as things could happen

Mummyoflittledragon · 09/06/2024 20:29

This is such a tragic outcome. But not entirely unexpected after so long. So sad for him and his family.

I have never heard of the what 3 words app very neat.

@LefkaOri good post and yes the Brits are known for going out in all weathers. The problem here is the terrain, surely. Its one thing going for a walk on the flat but here we're talking a trek ascending and descending rocky terrain and I gather all that rock absorbs the heat and warms up like a baking tray. Must have been like walking on an oven surface. But having said all that, we don't know how much the heat was the deciding factor. The terrain, getting lost perhaps, taking a strange walking route all combined to the end result.

Not now, Mumsnet targeted advertising when I view this page, not now!:

It was the same on an Aussie website too. I’m not sure it’s deliberate but it’s unfortunate

The rocky peninsula in question here in Symi certainly didnt look like an idyll to me, or thankfully the majority of holidaymakers. It's rare a guy of that age would set off on an impulsive amble as you rightly call it, but then again, MM was not your average guy.

That isn’t correct, they have the footage, he climbs down and falls. They don’t understand yet why he fell. Ie did he have a heart attack, it wasn’t a fall from height, he just fell.

it’s just very very sad.

WriterOfWrongs · 09/06/2024 21:31

Very unfortunately, considering the time the CCTV recorded Dr M by the beach resort wall, circa 3.30pm, that is precisely the time Greeks tend to have a siesta in summer. Remote island beach bars often open quite early in the day for custom then take a long break during the midday-afternoon when it’s sweltering and open again early evening. So there may not have been much staff, if any, around to note live CCTV or to hear anything.

@LefkaOri the DM report referred to earlier states this: “In the footage a customer is shown walking past the kiosk who could potentially have heard had there been any shout for help.”

That suggests the kiosk was open at the time.

I thought the opposite, if the kiosk was open people would habe been in it, working as such they’d have heard and the customer walking past it irrelevant. They also were walking past it, not going to it.

We don’t know that MM did “set off on an “impulsive amble”. We know he told his wife he was going for a walk. That could have been his (their) plan all along.

He made his way to Pedi fine and then it seems he may have got lost.

The customer walking past near the fence where poor MM was found is relevant.

Anyone working in the kiosk were not by definition walking near the fence and so closer to MM.

The noise in the kiosk would have made it harder to hear a shout from behind the fence from the kiosk.

I assumed they called the person a customer as they were going to the kiosk.

But you may be right!

DieselBlue89 · 09/06/2024 21:41

It's heartbreaking to think that Michael arrived at Agia Marina shortly before his wife's watertaxi would have been going past (I read that was leaving at 4pm). I wonder if he was planning on catching that 😔

Sad but expected outcome.

RIP DR. Mosley.

I also recommend the What3Words app - I've used it to get emergency teams to a tricky location to evacuate someone taken ill. It's very effective.

Yes it's like the old song isn't it: 'Mad dogs and Englishmen go out in the midday sun'. It's kind of a known trope about our culture, but unfortunately we perhaps don't understand the true power or danger of extreme heat.

I am going to listen to his podcast to pay my respects, as it were. I need to lose some weight around my tummy and I am always interested in good communications.

We had a recipe of his and Clare's tonight. I bought one of the books last week before this happened, and have purchased more now.

WriterOfWrongs · 09/06/2024 23:34

It's kind of a known trope about our culture, but unfortunately we perhaps don't understand the true power or danger of extreme heat.

It’s also simply that when you’re on holiday you have limited time to do things, so you may do things at non-ideal times because of availability and to get them done.

But it’s also of course not as black & white as The English do X and ‘The Natives’ do Y.

While going for a walk in the afternoon sun might not be something everyone does, it’s not like all the ‘natives’ are having a ‘nice nap’ or ‘cool drink in a cafe’ during the hours from 12-4pm.

After all, MM’s wife and friends spent the entire lunchtime and afternoon at the beach. There were staff there - presumably locals - and we don’t know if MM’s friends are ‘natives’ too. They and all the staff and other tourists were presumably fine in the heat.

Obviously they would probably have been shaded most of the time, but let’s not forgot that MM had a hat and an umbrella, he wasn’t completely unprotected.
