if people are sunbathing I am sure there are plenty of people who might get itchy feet and want to go for a walk, rather than lie in the sun. not tiff necessary

RedRosesPinkLilies · 09/06/2024 08:41

Coincidentally this was also in Greece, on a small island.

@EdithBond It's the heat on the dogs' paws.

Even in the UK you aren't supposed to take dogs out on pavements when it's hot weather.

No, so you go out early morning or the evening.

Yes but you’d communicate a plan before leaving. I don’t think anyone would merely say I’m off for a walk unless meaning a v brief look around the immediate area.

plimbow · 09/06/2024 08:44

The health of the rescuers has to be a consideration, the sun was burning the BBC reporter's legs early this morning.

That is a possibility. The heat can make me very grouchy and moody with family.

Well no it’s not but in the hope of a more successful outcome this information should be clearly communicated so that local people (who are seemingly a big part of the search operation) have a clearer idea of his intended or likely movements. There’s enough journalists on the ground and it’s obvious the communication is abysmal.

He posted a day or ago that it was so hot he had to put his BBC-issued laptop and phone in the fridge because they were overheating.

buidhebeltainn · 09/06/2024 08:49

Tim Harford has a podcast series "Cautionary Tales" One of them ("Danger: Rocks Ahead") is on something called "Plan Continuation Bias" The idea is that someone makes a plan, Plan A, then something makes them tweak it slightly, then something else makes them tweak it slightly again. They think they're still following Plan A, but at some point there have been so many tweaks that Plan A is now an unplanned Plan B.

I think that's what has happened here, and why there is so much confusion. There was Plan A. Water taxi to the beach, spend the day there, water taxi back. MM either forgets his phone, or realises it needs charging so leaves it on charge. So his Plan A is slightly tweaked to a day without his phone, but that's a tiny tweak. It doesn't matter.

At the beach, after a swim, MM decides that he wants to head home, while the others stick to Plan A. If at that point he's intending to walk to Pedi, then get the bus, that's quite straightforward. So it's a second tweak, but it's a small one.

None of them quite realise that the combination of Tweak 1 (no phone) and Tweak 2 (head home alone) is cumulatively bigger than two small tweaks to the plan.

He gets to Pedi and for some reason doesn't get the bus, or decides to do some exploring before getting a later bus. Bus later, rather than bus now is a small tweak to the plan. But that's the third small tweak. He still thinks he's on Plan A. But the combination of tweak 1 (no phone) tweak 2 (head off alone) and tweak 3 (don't get the bus his wife thinks he's getting) means that he's now on unplanned Plan B, and his wife and friends have no idea.

So he ends up at the point of the last CCTV sighting. He might not even realise he's on the wrong path at this point. Or this route might be Tweak 4. He's now onto Plan B, which would require, perhaps, a map, and a bigger water supply, and proper hiking shoes. But he doesn't realise he's unequipped for Plan B, because he thinks he's still on Plan A, slightly tweaked.

"Plan Continuation Bias" It's a thing.

Here's hoping today brings his family some answers.
Just feel heartsore about this as he seems a genuinely lovely man.

Lalgarh · 09/06/2024 08:52

There was speculation earlier that he had an Apple watch so he shouldn't have been too stymied by not having a mobile?

This is a greek link and quote from Another Talk board

"The firefighters spent an hour looking inside [the 'Abyss'], but said it was difficult to see through the mass of rocks, The Times reports.

Wife said 'Mosley had a khaki bag, a water, his wallet and wore a simple watch. She also said he was healthy and only had one pill for cholesterol."

His wife said yesterday that it is not a smart watch.

Honestly it's painful isn't it. Wear trousers so your legs don't burn. Stand in the shade, report from indoors. How on earth to they think reporters manage in the Middle and Far East where it is much hotter.

I understand it'll be hot for the searchers but just do it in relay, an hour on and hour off. Get the search dogs out early morning and early evening. At this stage it'll surely be a recovery mission no-one can last 4 days without water in the heat.

Somuch · 09/06/2024 08:31

I also wonder whether there was a bit of a tiff. He would have then just gone off and wouldn’t have said where he was going.

I don't see any evidence for an argument. Many of us have said we often go off for walks on our own. We're were on holiday with friends last week and whenever we went to the beach I always went off for a walk on my own (I get bored on the beach).
Also a couple are far less likely to argue in front of another couple! Particularly when that couple are hosting you and it's your first day on holiday with them. It would create a very awkward atmosphere.

Manhere2024 · 09/06/2024 08:54

Sorry, I just read on and realised you were making the same point!

IAlwaysTellTheTruthEvenWhenILie · 09/06/2024 08:57

If his phone was overheating to the extent it needed to go in the fridge, that's another reason why he might've left it at home.

Manhere2024 · 09/06/2024 08:59

Great post. It’s similar to the little holes in the cheese align anology and cause a castraphy!

Delatron · 09/06/2024 09:01

It does seem to appear like there’s a big information vacuum and maybe the police/family know more than us.

With the similar case of the man going missing on Zante I’m sure I read that they flew in some Welsh mountain search teams. It seems they need a bit more man power if they haven’t found him by now. I am sure they are doing their best in these conditions but a fresh team could help.

I think the dogs are just not the best in that heat. I too am slightly perplexed as to why they don’t start at first light - say 6am when the rocks will be cooler and the temperature too. But they are the experts.

This is brilliant, thank you. Relevant to everyone - it's just life.
I really just hope MM is ok - no speculating here. His blood sugar diet book has really helped DH. ☹️

“Body of Michael Mosley has been found on Agia Marina beach, in northern Symi, deputy mayor Nikita Gryllis said.”

Swollenandgrouchy · 09/06/2024 09:03

Am reading that Greek news says he’s been found (dead) close to
agia marina. Trying to translate an article.
