We don’t know he was intending to go back to the villa.

The only way to get there was a) walking on the main road from Pedi, b) taking a bus from Pedi, c) walking over the track across the hills.

I’ve not been to the island, but reports suggest he took a wrong turn, so there is no C option.

Some countries/areas you can’t pay in any form on bus but need a pre purchased ticket. My teen recently got caught out like this abroad.

Sure, but it is irrelevant as you can pay in pedi.

Here we go with yet another bit of information.

I don't usually post on these threads, but it's frustrating to see so many posters who aren't reading what's out there.

No one has ever said he was catching a bus.
He set out from the beach to go to the villa in Symi town.

The only way to get there was a) walking on the main road from Pedi, b) taking a bus from Pedi, c) walking over the track across the hills.

It appears from CCTV that he did c).

But this is misinformation too. We don’t know what he definitely was heading back to the villa. We all assumed that originally but now his wife has said he went for a walk.

Some people are impatient and would get irritated by “bloody stupid system” and not bother. Again there’s been no clarification as to whether he did attempt to board a bus. If it was an unreliable sighting now discounted they should really be saying formally just so the locals have clearer information.

Willmafrockfit · 09/06/2024 07:50

in case this hasnt been noticed, i read that the dog can only work for an hour a day due to the heat.

LaBelleEtLeBadBoy · 09/06/2024 07:35

Really don’t understand why some posters feel the need to be rude.

My understanding was that he was sighted in Pedi trying to catch a bus.

Hoping he is found soon.

When the news of him missing came out there were all sorts of claims and assumptions e.g. trying to catch a bus - it would be logical in that heat having walked to Pedi to then get the bus the rest of the way, so was a reasonable assumption, but no evidence of this.

Puygo · 09/06/2024 07:58

Is the news this morning saying all he said when he left the beach is that he was going for a walk? So we don’t really know that he was trying to get back to the villa?

The Mirror is saying the dog is being returned to Athens as too hot to work.

That's a shame. I would have thought the dog could work at dawn and dusk when it's cooler, but clearly not.

There is a lot of muddled info here. And many posters haven't even looked at the map and understood the position of Symi (town) and where MM was heading.

I thought it was clear that he was walking back to the villa in Symi.

Also, I wish the Mayor would just shut up.

He's coming out with very subjective comments that have little to do with the search. He's close to casting aspersions and being emotionally 'involved' in terms of asking why he was walking, his state of mind etc.
I don't think we need comments like that.

I think what the mayor is saying is all about the tourism and protecting the industry. But I agree that nothing he says has been particularly helpful, it’s all just speculation. The reporters keep saying how beautiful the island is which feels like the same thing.

TokyoSushi · 09/06/2024 08:00

I really thought they would have found him yesterday, what a huge worry for his family.

If he had had a heart attack or collapsed and died, if feel he would have been spotted.

he could have fallen in the sea by taking a wrong turn, but I do wonder why no one spotted his umbrella.

if he had broken a leg or an ankle, I think he would have tried to take cover and wait to be found but I would have thought he would have left a clue somewhere for searchers.

of he has fallen down a crevice

Countrylife2002 · 09/06/2024 08:09

You’d think the thermal devices would have located him.

It’s just so odd.

I think this must be dodgy reporting. It doesn’t make sense the dog is too hot all day. And surely they can bring others dogs, including from Turkey, which is v close. I can understand the heat might affect the dog’s ability to concentrate (so perhaps it’s not just only about its welfare) but it can surely work in the cooler parts of the day.

Passiflora2 · 09/06/2024 08:10

I read somewhere there are several dogs but they are struggling in the heat.

Countrylife2002 · 09/06/2024 08:12

Dogs are not great at all in heat, even if they are acclimatised. I wouldn’t have thought they could work long at all.

Thegreatgiginthesky · 09/06/2024 08:13

Yes I read about multiple sniffer dogs too. Also weren't they meant to be bringing in heat sensing equipment, has it arrived yet?

Re: checking caves, he would have needed to
deliberately swum out to them from beach. Passing time until next bus?

Must admit I have been wondering why there haven't been several dogs searching the island.

Passiflora2 · 09/06/2024 08:18

Just watching Sky news and they say the search is continuing all over the island but also in the underground caves with drops of up to 40 feet. Heat seeking helicopters yielded no results. Dogs returned to Athens. They do seem to have a shortage of manpower and no posts or info about him in the village . Surely he’s has got to be in the sea or fallen in one of those caves. They are resuming using divers too.

The caves are on the hills I think. He might have been looking for shelter or water and come a cropper .

Zonder · 09/06/2024 08:19

This isn't what I've heard. I've heard people praising them for the resources that have been pulled in to help and also that local people and tourists have been involved.

Passiflora2 · 09/06/2024 08:20

Sky news said they had spoken to a local person who had been helping with the search. He said the reverse.

Yes surely get the dogs out at 6am and 6pm it won't be in the 30s then. It all sounds so half arsed. Any footage from the island doesn't seem to be a hive of search and rescue activity at all, unless away from the cameras but why would it be? The local residents seems to be putting in more of an effort.
