Following on from thread 1, linked below.

Let's hope the CCTV / sighting in town gives a glimmer of home that he made the walk from the beach to town ok.

A lot of rescue teams in the UK are volunteers e.g. Mountain Rescue, RNLI, St Johns Ambulance and then you have Special Constables assisting the police and probably loads I've forgotten.

21 Air Ambulance charities.

Starlia · 08/06/2024 10:51

Just want to say as someone who lives in a vast, inhospital country that search and rescues are often called off at night because it is incredibly dangerous for the searchers.

Secondly, often the search party/police know quite a lot more than they tell the public. It is likely what we see as ‘basic’ is far more complex. This is entirely correct. The family should be the first to know any developments.

Finally, when it comes to rough country, nobody knows it like locals. They will know which creek flash floods, at what time the heat becomes dangerous, the paths that are dangerous, where the water is.

@Ilikeadrink14 you were criticised for saying the family should be ashamed. What's the point in apologising then downplaying what you posted?

Oh give her a break. She’s apologised which is far better than all the posters who simply dig their heels in and justify justify justify to the point of ridiculousness.

Why are you even trying to resurrect an unpleasant moment on the thread?

If I’m out and about in a hot country (Spain, Greece, etc.) I always have a big 2l bottle in my rucksack, as a little one is gone in no time. That’s if I’m just walking in a town. If I’m walking out in the sun there’s no way I’d be without a good sized bottle. Surely not just me?

What is the point you’re making please, and why?

no one knows which way he went, the authorities are searching everywhere they can. It is hugely likely :

he thought he was on the short path and didn’t realise., so didn’t buy more water.
he said to his family he was heading back as didn’t feel great, and they said will we come with you, and he said no no, the walk will do me good.
he said nothing to his family.
hes not even on the path they are now searching.

the point is it’s a tiny island, no one knows which route he took, why he took it, what happened to him or how prepared he was. It could be nothing to do with water. He could be somewhere entirely different. He could have dropped down of a fatal heart attack and would have had the same outcome where ever he was. No one knows.

Me too - it stinks the people already saying "cock up" on the basis of zero knowledge.
I wonder what fantastic work these armchair experts do that they are so qualified to judge the entire operation.

It does stink. People need to remember they’ll be lots going on behind the scenes that they don’t broadcast to us. We only know the nbasics.

kαλοκαλοκαιρι · 08/06/2024 10:55

In case it’s interesting, to the person asking about searching at night, The deputy mayor just spoke on the news about this case and said he was once forced to sleep on the trail overnight due to the “danger of trying to navigate with a torch in the dark on some of the paths”

about the case he then went on to say the

“mobilization” is “really, really huge.” He says “100 people” have been “ in teams combing Symi, alternately.” He says they now have use of “the dog and the drones and the Coast Guard.” as well as police and firefighters.

later on he also says that the “extreme heat” in the island is hampering the ability of the search dog“ to be out for many hours“

Obviously you aren't the only person who takes water on a walk, you didnt really think that did you?

Still wondering what the point of these type of posts are, though, as far we know MM wasn't carrying large quantities of water or a phone, what's the thought process behind posts saying you'd do differently

Not specifically aimed as you as there have been lots of similar posts, I just don't get it

Would you say that to someone in real life, oh no, your husband has gone missing without water, I always take 2l out with me??

It's weird to me

Dehydration and tiredness affects judgement. And we all know how bad men are at asking for directions! My DH would rather take the wrong path than ask someone whether he's heading the right way.

The CCTV is so poignant, because he appears to pause and look into the shop and I wonder if he was contemplating buying a bottle of water? But then he continues on his way.

I was just thinking that as well.

That it can be a well meaning masculine trait - to not ask for help.

If he tried to get a bus and it was cancelled. Instead of him going into a cafe to ask for help and borrow a phone, to get his wife to come and get him.

I can see him deciding not to trouble anyone ,and to walk on further himself and get there himself.

IdisagreeMrHochhauser · 08/06/2024 10:59

The BBC have released the latest CCTV image now but not knowing the area, it's not obvious to me that it confirms he's heading for the mountains.

I don't think people forget that real families are involved.

And you also should realise that people on here have gone through similar things.

People going missing, is actually quite common

My own father went missing for a month, and was eventually found, passed away.

I remember everything we went through. I remember going out searching, I remember thinking of where he was at night, was he lying in the cold. I remember it all

i know what this family are going through, and i am thinking about them this week.

Someone going missing, happens to a lot of families actually.

Flowers Indeed. Sorry for your loss.

Because we know this man's face we feel like we know him and we all hope for a good outcome but fear the worst. Terrible time for his family.

Yes sorry this is what I meant when I said ‘the poor dog’. It’s such tricky search conditions and dogs can’t be out in the heat for hours even if they are trained/used to it.

Chaosx3x · 08/06/2024 11:02

As I pointed out upthread. It’s all possible that he asked for directions and he was given poor or incorrect advice about which path to take. Even just an offhand comment like “oh it’s that way, unless you fancy a bit of an adventure and some nice views? Oh if you like a nice walk then take the other path, you can see the whole island from up there” etc. Everyone is assuming he’s lost or failed to ask for directions but maybe he was actually told this was a good/nice way to walk. Or maybe he misinterpreted directions.

Mojodojocasahous · 08/06/2024 11:04

It’s so sad, I can’t see how they’ll find him alive now. His poor wife.

fungipie · 08/06/2024 11:04

I really feel it is so worng to speculate like this. Anything could have happened. Sometimes people do go missing voluntarily too, for all sorts of reasons. One of my uncles did, for over 2 years, then walked back in as if nothing had happened. Leaving his wife totally bereft with 4 teenage kids.

If you’re walking a miles a litre bottle is quite heavy. Two litres even heavier.

Was he wearing an apple watch. I didn't know that

If he's wearing an apple watch, he could text from the that couldn't he

Only if he had cellular data in his watch. The standard models don't come with it.
My watch required my phone to be in the vicinity for texts and calls.

It's all over the news people are going to comment. Although I think you're speculating too tbh by saying folk sometimes go missing voluntarily.

That's the funniest thing I have heard in weeks - heat-seeking camera's don't work in the day when it's hot...
😂😂

They do

Sadly, they don't only work on finding those who are alive either...

Justrelax · 08/06/2024 11:15

Whatever water he had, he had since they set out that morning so could have consumed a fair amount already. If he was planning to walk 20 minutes and get a bus to accommodation with water, he is likely not to have felt he needed huge amounts of water so could well have left it with those who planned to stay on the beach for several more hours. In the photo of him before he left the beach, his backpack is unzipped and there doesn't seem to be a bottle of water in it (though I know he could have put one in after that). I wish they would find him. I hope he's alive, by some miracle.

Right and he never mentioned where he'd been for two years.....

Sorry I think you’ve completely misunderstood my intentions with this post. The post I was responding to mentioned about how one bottle wouldn’t have been enough (and a few posts have mentioned how a small bottle wouldn’t last). Of course no one knows if he had water and if so, how much.

I am hoping he will be found and hoping that somehow a larger bottle might have helped him survive if he had to take shelter and make it last while he waited to be found.

I’m not criticising anyone or saying I know better – I am just thinking through scenarios that might make hope of him being found safe a possibility. I’m hoping there’s a decent chance he had a good amount of water with him.

Cadela · 08/06/2024 11:18

CCTV now showing he walked towards the rocky hills instead of going through the town.

why it’s only coming out now I’ll never know. There would have been a possibility of finding him if they’d checked all this the day he went missing.

I fear it can only be bad news now

Oh I never used one. I didn't realise that you couldn't use it if it wasn't near your phone.

I presumed that if you paid for a plan on your iPhone it would work on your apple watch too.

So they don't work if your phone is not near

They sound a bit useless then
