Just that really. Will he be found?

I hope his family don't ever read this thread. It'll be full of people bickering about left behind phones and whether we're allowed to be concerned about someone we don't know. Usual Mumsnet.

Yes, it's the second night missing and I really hope he's ok. I've never read one of his books or done a diet but he pops up on the radio a lot and he seems to be a thoroughly decent chap. We are allowed to care about people we haven't met.

MattDamon · 06/06/2024 22:22

You obviously didn't read it. It says heat is a trigger. How embarrassing for you.

And it's not like the 24 hrs is on a stop watch. It could be anything but his history is relevant.

It also mentions that if you’ve had it once you’re unlikely to ever have it again

JessyCarr · 06/06/2024 22:23

@pentangles I volunteer for a missing persons charity - it is a complete myth that (in the UK) there is any 24 or 48 hours’ “rule” preventing early searches for missing people. On the contrary, it is imperative that searching starts as soon as possible for obvious reasons.

The Greek authorities, to their credit, seem to have taken this seriously from the moment he was reported missing. Apart from anything else, temperatures there are so high (forecast to be around 48 C tomorrow, according to the BBC News) that an injured or incapacitated person would need to be taken to safety ASAP.

Thanks, hopefully i was misinformed.

I wonder why we are so invested? internet age?
imagine arguing online over something we only know a tiny bit about.

Unlikely but does happen.

turnipsandtiaras · 06/06/2024 22:29

His recent 'live' shows were disastrous and cringe.

Bloody hell. Genuine human concern for a well liked TV personality perhaps?

Acapulco12 · 06/06/2024 22:31

pentangles · 06/06/2024 22:22

It was about eating slowly and mindfully to cut calories and I was musing that I would do this myself later.

Not exactly rocket science is it? Not a huge fan of his 'work'.
I can't tolerate blind idolatry, but similarly i hope he is located soon. He is a decent chap.

I don’t think anything that @Justleaveitblankthen said here is at all a suggestion of blind idolatry. I think that’s unnecessary and harsh.

Because we feel for him and for his family and friends and wish him well. It’s a normal human instinct to look out for others and to want them to be okay.

VariantHela · 06/06/2024 22:33

Can everyone put their knives away, there's a missing man. Ffs.

SheSaidHummingbird · 06/06/2024 22:37

BBC News is reporting "His phone was found in the place he was staying with his wife, who reported him missing, a police spokesperson told BBC News" whilst The Evening Standard says "It was around 1.30pm and he forgot his phone at the beach. Any and every attempt to track him down has not produced any result.”

Those are two very different statements. When I read the BBC news article, I was confused about the timeline, as it suggests that he went from the beach to the accommodation, left his phone there and then ventured out. Maybe it's nothing, but it seems like an important detail.

I hope he's safe.

Edit: spelling

His wife raised the alarm after just 6 hours; had they had a spat?

That's ages! I would raise the alarm before that

I would think that’s plenty of time to start worrying enough to call the police. I hope he’s found safe and well. Hope terrible for the family.

He walked home and she stayed behind intending to get a water taxi back. She might not even have known he was missing until she got home and he wasn't there.

Anyway, none of us know. Wildly speculating won't help anyone.

Channellingsophistication · 06/06/2024 22:45

I cant stop thinking about him and pray he is ok. I’ve got his books and watch and listen to him often. He has done so much and his wife too, in helping promote good health. Really hoping he will be found safe.

I suppose because it could happen to any of us.

A European break, a pop to the beach, a wave and 'see you later' fully expecting to meet up in a few hours.

It's the everydayness about the event that's drawing us all in. It feels really close and real.

Inlimboin50s · 06/06/2024 22:47

This is so strange and I really hope he is safe and well.
I wonder if they holiday on the island a lot and if he knows it well. Knows all the tracks and has walked them before? The path was not by the sea so surely a search party would have found him.

Cornishclio · 06/06/2024 22:49

Still no news of him and the temperatures tomorrow on Symi are forecasted to be high 40s. On a tourist map the path between the beach Ayios Nikolaos and Pedhi doesn't look long but apparently it is rocky and challenging terrain. The suggestion now is either he took the wrong path and is lost in the mountains or fell in the sea, Hiking in those temperatures and with no phone or gps is crazy. Hope they find him soon.

Inlimboin50s · 06/06/2024 22:51

Ahh apologise, I thought he had walked in to the centre of the island, not back to Pedhi on the coast path

What a putrid post.

Bunnycat101 · 06/06/2024 22:52

“Odd that dogs, drones and such were used this early, since usually they won't search for anyone over 18 unless it's been 48 hours.”

This is not true and is a myth that shouldn’t be spread as it might stop people seeking help. I have a vulnerable relative who went missing and the police were round asap and the helicopters not long after.

LaurieFairyCake · 06/06/2024 22:53

Really unlikely to survive that Sad
