What time do you get up in the morning and why?

I'm just curious really.

I have always been a 7am riser. That is the time DDs wake up (they are now at primary school) and I always prioritised sleep throughout their baby stages.

But I've found myself recently waking up at 6am on the dot every day, then staying in bed dozing and feeling more tired by the time I actually get up. I'm wondering if I got up at 6am when I naturally seem to wake up I could get more done and actually have time for some exercise (or just a quiet coffee in peace!)

What time do you get up in the morning and what's the reasoning behind it?

I WFH and don’t have to start until 9 so in theory I could get up as late as 8.30, but in practice it’s 5.30 or 6 so that I can either go to the gym or the supermarket first. I’m a morning person & that works well for me.

TorroFerney · 29/05/2024 07:32

5:45 . To get to the gym when it opens at six to be back for seven and have enough time to have a leisurely breakfast and get ready before work. If I leave the gym til after work I will not go and I don’t find it hard to get up at that time (that’s not me showing off it’s just a fact!).

Coaltodiamonds · 29/05/2024 07:33

5.30ish. I am not a morning person but the dog is 🥱

cryinglaughing · 29/05/2024 07:34

5:15am - get up to do dd's breakfast and sandwiches before she goes to work.
I also have a number of animals that need tending to before anything else.

tangoboxing · 29/05/2024 07:34

5:30 … we have 4 teenagers/young adult kids the the house, getting up early is the only way we get uninterrupted time together!

cartreffi · 29/05/2024 07:35

I'm an early riser, up at 5 and either go to the gym or for a run, or just enjoy a cup of tea in peace before the rest of the household wake. This is a fairly new thing though, I used to struggle to get up and hated the sound of my alarm but as I've got older (46 now) I wake early naturally, I rarely get woken by an alarm . I love being up and awake early, however I'm in bed by 9 p.m. it works for me.

WhenSunnyGetsBlue · 29/05/2024 07:36

I wake up at 6 most days, sometimes 5:30 in the summer when it's lighter. Before my daughter was born I always loved to have an hour in the morning to myself before the work emails started for a bowl of porridge and BBC breakfast or a run. Now with DD we both wake up at 6 and go into the living room for a story and morning cuddles. She used to watch the sunrise on her bouncy chair while I made breakfast but it's already light now. The morning is one of my favourite times of day where I can be completely present for my daughter with no distractions. When she's older I will probably go back to using that hour as 'me time'. I always get out of bed when I wake up (unless ill). I prefer to open the curtains and see the morning. 😊

KurtCobainLover · 29/05/2024 07:39

I wake up at 5am most days and in bed by 9.30pm. It suits me because I have time to enjoy my coffee and walk the dog before my teenagers emerge from their rooms.

fieldsofbutterflies · 29/05/2024 07:40

IME dozing is really dangerous as you potentially fall back into a deeper sleep and then feel absolutely awful.

My alarm is set for 7.30 on workdays but I often wake up earlier and have a coffee in bed.

derama · 29/05/2024 07:41

6.30am to give DD2 milk before DC1 gets up at 7am. I'm not a natural early riser and when DD2 stops breastfeeding I'll start getting up at 7am again. I prefer to be awake late and going to sleep at 1 or 2am is my normal sleep time, and the time when I get things done.

EmpressaurusDeiGatti · 29/05/2024 07:50

I also have a number of animals that need tending to before anything else.

That too. All of my foster cats have been able to tell the time but none of them know what day it is, so if they get 5.30 breakfast on a Tuesday they expect it on a Saturday. On weekends I often put the food down & go back to bed for a couple of hours.

itsgettingweird · 29/05/2024 07:53

4am.

My ds is a swimmer

DisplayPurposesOnly · 29/05/2024 07:53

Alarm goes off 6.45, but it takes me awhile to wake up (like a diver on a deep dive, I resurface slowly). I'm currently in bed with a coffee... Ideally will get up at 8 to start work at 9.30.

OmuraWhale · 29/05/2024 07:54

I leave the house at 7.50 on the days when I'm not wfh. I don't bother setting an alarm any more because I know for sure I'll be awake before 7.20 (and it doesn't take me long to get ready). So I wake naturally somewhere between 6.30 and 7.20, depending on when I went to bed / how tired I am etc. I usually get up when I wake rather than dozing in bed. On my wfh days I go for a run before work.

Crunchymum · 29/05/2024 07:56

Between 6 - 6.45am on weekdays. 7.30am on Saturday (we have activities) but Sundays and school holidays are when we wake. 7.45am today.

I WFH so on the days I do work in the holidays I set an alarm for 8am.

Kids are older now and don't wake as early. It's wonderful.

Hiker50 · 29/05/2024 07:57

5.30am when I'm working. I'm a teacher and need to be in for 7am. My commute is 45-1 hr
When I'm not working around 6.30 because I now always wake up at 5.30!!

I think that's what I'm finding. My body seems to be naturally waking up around 6am but I'm still in the mode I was in when DDs were babies and thinking I must doze and get as much sleep as possible. In reality they have slept through the night for years now and I'm always in bed around 10.30pm so I'm getting plenty of sleep.

I may try getting up whenever I wake up and see how I get on.

Between 6 and 7, I have older DC (late teens) who sort themselves out and a DH who lies in till 7.30-8 so I get the house to myself to potter, catch up with FB, the news, whatever, water the garden, feed the cats. Weekends similar. I am neither a lark or a night owl but seem to function best early and late, I go to bed between 11 and 12 and am often busy right up till then.

RedBananas12 · 29/05/2024 08:04

5.30. I like to do my cleaning and have a coffee before the kids get up.

Churchview · 29/05/2024 08:05

I got up this morning at my usual time of 7.30am.
Sat in the garden with my cup of coffee thinking ohhh how lovely, all the birds on the feeders, sun out and the moon still up! Reveling in how very quiet it is.

Went in to look at the clock and it was just before 6am!
No idea what happened there, but I am going to set my clock earlier from now on as I have been missing the freshest, loveliest, quietest and best part of the day.

Ihateboris · 29/05/2024 08:08

Up at 5. Walk three dogs for an hour, then workout for 90 minutes (a combination of running/pilates/body barre).

Devilshands · 29/05/2024 08:09

05:00 - This it to get the train (when I commute) at 05:30 and in the office for 07:00. When I WFH (most of the time) it gives my dogs 30 minutes to digest their food before I walk them (05:30).

Go to bed about 22:00.

There’s been a lot of studies that show that getting up/going to bed at the same time is really good for you. So I get up and go to bed at the same time every night and tbh I feel brilliant for it.

Wishihadanalgorithm · 29/05/2024 08:09

I’m amazed at so many early risers.
If I could, I’d stay in bed until I wake up naturally - about 8.30-9.00. However, for work I’m awake just after 6 and up by 6.15.

i used to be a lark but now I’m more of an owl.

Sirzy · 29/05/2024 08:10

Work days 6.30 to give me time to get myself ready and the DS meds and therapies done before we go out at 8.

holidays I normally wake even earlier annoyingly!

rosegoldivy · 29/05/2024 08:11

4.35am 4 times a week to get up and get to the gym and home for 6.45am before DH leaves at 7ish. Other 3 days up at 5.30 to go a walk.
3 kids under 5 and work full time. If I didn't ring fence that time to get up to exercise I never would have the time.
