Curious things your neighbours do...

Lighthearted!!

I'm not a curtain twitcher (I promise!) but was vacuuming earlier when I noticed the neighbour opposite was out jetwashing his drive...in the rain! He's now moved on to jetwashing the car (also in the rain). Each to their own, I guess.

But it reminded me of another neighbour who used to come outdoors each night and sweep the pavement in front of his house. Not sure what he was sweeping away (dust? Stones?) but most nights at around 8pm, you'd hear the swish swish of the brush.

Does anyone else have neighbours who do curious things?

In the summer he waters his garden at 6am... with a metal watering can, that he fills very noisily every 3 minutes from his outdoor tap 6 feet away from our bedroom.

But that is the worst thing we have ever had to put up with in 30 years... so we pop in some earplugs.

Downstairs has a very nice garden which she treats as a giant potting shed. Potters around, trims a few leaves and goes in after about 10 minutes. She never uses it for sitting outside (which is the point of a garden, IMO).

Plump82 · 27/05/2024 17:25

My neighbour cuts his grass, except he doesn't have any grass. He has a patio and goes over it with a lawnmower??!!

the80sweregreat · 27/05/2024 17:26

Is this in the UK op?
We've had so much rain lately I'm shocked he needs to water the garden as much.
My neighbours are all fairly normal to be honest and quiet , which is good. I dread any of them moving away , even though none of them are my friends.
I don't sit on my garden much either when it's nice and never have done.
Maybe my neighbours think I'm weird!

the80sweregreat · 27/05/2024 17:26

In my garden , not on !

MumMumMumMumMumMumMum · 27/05/2024 17:27

Jet washing in the rain is neither here nor there, I seem to get soaked jet washing so wouldn't make any difference 🤣 plus rain helps wash dirt away!

the80sweregreat · 27/05/2024 17:29

Dh cleaned his car throughly the other Saturday morning in nice sunshine.
Someone walked past and said ' it's gonna rain later on mate ' and it did ! Heavily. That'll teach him.

Cuts their grass most Sundays at 8am? Is there a reason for doing it every week? And why 8am? It’s so frigging annoying.

they also have 5 cardboard recycling bins and 6 tin/plastic recycling bins. Never seen them using them. All very bizarre.

I have a neighbour who also sweeps outside every evening at 8pm weirdly, I also don’t know what he’s sweeping.

One time I parked my car outside his house (not in front of a dropped kerb) and I found a furious note on the car - 'this road is not your car park'. This is despite the fact I wasn't blocking anyone and it was totally legal to be there. I presume it was from the neighbour who was annoyed because I was probably parked in the 'zone' where he liked to brush each evening. 😘

People are strange arn't they?
Especially about parking and things.

ALovelyCupOfNameChange · 27/05/2024 17:50

Sweeping outside your house used to be a thing in my grandparents day, as did clearing the path of snow. Generally looking after the pavement as an extension of your house

Coffeegincarbs · 27/05/2024 17:51

I'm the "binfluencer" in my street - always the first to put my bins out. My neighbours think I'm odd!😉

No we need you, I'd never know when to pop mine out if it weren't for Trash Angels such as yourself... I think neighbourhoods should chip in for a gift at Christmas for your kind tbh. 😂

RightOnTheEdge · 27/05/2024 17:55

I've never once seen them take their dog out for a walk. You'd hardly even know they had a dog except in two years, I've probably seen it looking out of the window about 5 times.

Healthy family as far as I can tell, with teenaged boys, so no obvious reason why none of them take it out.

the80sweregreat · 27/05/2024 17:55

Dh likes a sweep up outside as well as did his mum and dad , but not at 8pm or even set times. Loves a bit of snow clearing , but that's rare.
I like the bins out the night before nicely lined up , then get annoyed when the bin men leave it anyhow or too close to the car. I'm sure they have competitions as to how far they can push them around or actually hit people's cars.
It's like a hurricane.

VesperLind · 27/05/2024 18:01

One of our neighbours puts her washing out on the line every morning at 7. Full load, every day out it goes no matter what the weather. Pouring rain - she’s there pegging it out. Snow - same.

My neighbours put their baby/toddler in the pram, from the house to the car, put the baby in car, then pram in boot, then do it in reverse when going back in from wherever they've has been. They've done it with both their children, up until they no longer needed a pram/pushchair. They do it both alone and together.

My next door neighbour is our binfluencer and I love her! Get home from work and I know instantly whether it's black bin or grey bin week. Keep going. 👍🏼

Hi neighbour! I know - I've got too much to do, I'm not very organised and it always dries eventually 😁

HorribleHisTories15 · 27/05/2024 18:21

Our neighbours are nice people, however

One: was a professional gardener and has four lawnmowers, one of which sounds like it is hammering the ground, and is used last of all to keep the stones down or bring them up and remove them from the soil 🤔

Another: thinks that the garden is his territory like a hound. So if we go out into the garden or the kids, he goes out and always does noisy work (exercise & streaming, bashing rugs, sawing wood etc). He never allows us to be out there without his presence being felt. Thing is, is that there are 5 of us and only 2 of them, and his wife works, so he can't outdo us on noise.

But we have had muuuuch worse, so we accept these little quirks and as blessings in disguise. 🥸

You sure it's not one of those things that look like a lawnmower but designed to collect leaves etc? Saw one for sale the other day on a Facebook page. Hadn't known they existed.

Whycantiwinmillionsandsquillions · 27/05/2024 18:24

I’ve been gardening earlier and a neighbour decided to play football with his son in the street. The street is full of parked cars.
There are 3 large grassed areas within under 2 minutes walk of his house. 2 of which we all pay for. They are huge, football sized green areas, fenced off away from cars. The other is a park behind the houses.
Yet the twat was shouting and carrying on so that everyone could hear including neighbours who might be on nights.
Unsurprisingly the ball went under our car. I glared at the child and his dad decided it was time for him to go in and leave his child to crawl about in the street and retrieve the ball.

My female neighbour has LOTS of male visitors...usually for an hour at a time. Yes,I'm a curtain twitcher!
