WWYD about lying hairdresser?

CharDee · 26/05/2024 21:16

I was bridesmaid at a wedding yesterday. The bride wanted to spend the morning with her mum and sister who is MOH and then the bridesmaids turn up at 12 for photos and to get dressed. All bridesmaids were asked to do their own hair and makeup so before Christmas I booked with my regular hair dresser for her to do my hair and makeup yesterday morning. My appointment was at 9. I have been going to the same hairdresser for the past 7 years and go roughly every 3 months for a colour and book hair/make up for special occasions because I am genuinely terrible at styling my own hair! It’s something that she knows and often jokes about! I also don’t own much makeup as I don’t wear it often.

On Friday night just after 11 I got a message from my hairdresser to say it was her husband messaging and that she was currently in a&e very unwell, would likely be there for hours as she hadn’t been seen yet and she needed to cancel my appointment. Obviously I replied and thanked him for letting me know and sent my well wishes.

Being ill is completely unavoidable and although it inconvenienced me, I was more concerned about her health. The late hour meant that I couldn’t get in touch with anyone else and even though I did call a few local salons as soon as they opened on Saturday morning, the only appointment was one late in the afternoon.

I managed to do my own hair, just straightened it and put a nice clip in. I put a bit of makeup on but it didn’t look that good! The other bridesmaids are completely different skin tones so they were able to help a little. I felt a bit rubbish but had a good time anyway, just didn’t feel very special! I have very low self esteem at the moment and felt so washed out standing with the stunning bride and beautiful bridesmaids. It really hasn’t helped.

Whilst waiting for the reception I was on instagram and saw a friend’s story. She had gone on her hen do abroad that morning. She shared photos of the airport which were from 6:30 in the morning and she’s there with all her friends all posing with drinks. My hairdresser was one of them. It’s definitely her and we have both spoken about hen do friend being a mutual friend. I went on to friends Facebook profile and saw they’d all been for a meal and then stayed in an apartment the night before and hairdresser was in the photos but not tagged. There was a video of the hen doing something that was posted at 11:30 and hairdresser is there in the background laughing with someone else. In the actual video the hen said something about it being nearly midnight and how she needed her beauty sleep.

I paid a 50% deposit for my appointment and in the message her husband said that she would transfer the deposit to my next appointment which is booked for a few weeks time for a colour. I am a regular customer and this appointment was made months ago. If she had double booked herself and said she had this hen do then I would have understood and had time to book elsewhere. Instead she has lied about it and left me completely stuck.

Would you contact her when she’s back from the hen do and ask her about it? Would you cancel the upcoming appointment? Would you just let it go?

I’m trying to work out a scenario where she hasn’t lied but she was hardly going to be able to do my hair whilst on a flight to Ibiza even if she wasn’t ill.

Aww how awful. I had a really good MUA cancel on me before , with not enough notice to book someone else before a really big event...so annoying and she was so handy but i couldnt go back....
I don't think yours did it deliberately ..she is just thoughtless and all about her. Also doesnt want to admit to a mistake so is trying to style it out.... You are no doubt a lovely client and person but are reliable and dramafree and therefore a bit of a walkover in her eyes. She thought you would just shrug your shoulders and forgive her. I think there are a lot of people like that nowadays. Have no loyalty or integrity to people but will trip over themselves for a select few. It's her loss. Cast your net wider and get a few on your list. Get hair and make up done separately. And get your money back !!! Let us know what she says.

Amybelle88 · 28/05/2024 00:00

I'd comment on the mutual friends pics saying everyone looks fabulous including hairdresser who you're glad to see is better after her stint in a&e.

I'd then request a refund and find somebody else. Little witch.

CharDee · 28/05/2024 00:04

Still no reply from her but she has posted on her business page that she is away for this week and will get to her messages when she gets back on Saturday. This is accompanied by a picture of her and her friends at the apartment with hen balloons and decorations. Also, DN pointed this out to me I wasn't looking at her page, there is a clock on the wall next to them and it says 11:10 on it. Someone has commented on it saying "Was so jealous leaving you all on Friday night!! Hope you're having the best time in Ibiza you all look fab!" I won't because I'm not going to cause drama but would love to comment and ask why I had a message to say she was very ill in a&e and had to have my appointment cancelled when she was clearly out and off on holiday the next morning. DN has said that she's ready to post as soon as I give the go ahead but I've told her to leave it, at least until I get my money back!

I definitely realise that I am just a client who is easily replaceable and that she is more "important" to me than I am to her. And it's just a lesson learnt really that I need to move past and forget about!

Don't forget they are 1hr ahead of UK time. Not that it changes anything. Well done OP in your replies though.

Lucycantdance · 28/05/2024 00:12

God I am raging on your behalf, cannot believe the brass neck of her to not even apolgise when she has been caught out?!

Sorry, I meant the apartment from Friday night where they all stayed together before going to the airport.

I wonder if she knows that her husband laid it on thick about her being in A&E? Doesn't change the fact that she was never intending to do your hair and makeup though.
She perhaps just forgot until the last minute and got her husband to contact you.
Shoddy behaviour, to put it mildly. I just cannot stand being lied to. How could you ever sit in the salon chair chatting to her again? The trait has gone and you're absolutely right to call her out on it.

DaniMontyRae · 28/05/2024 00:23

@SilkFloss it probably wasn't even her husband posting, she was most likely just pretending to be him.

CharDee · 28/05/2024 00:29

Yeah I think it must have been her messaging pretending to be him. It came from her business Facebook account.

I can see how it would be so tempting to screenshot the text and post it under the photo, but in reality I'd just wait for the refund and never use her again. It's so obvious that she wanted the money for the hen which is why she left you in the lurch and tried to bullshit you (with a horrible lie about being seriously ill!). It's not like the hen do was a surprise trip. She knew about it far in advance I'm sure and would have planned your appointment so she could use the money and drop you in the shit. It really is unforgivable. It was definitely her as the "husband".

AliceOlive · 28/05/2024 02:56

I think she’s spending all the deposit money from her missed appointments in Ibiza.

Josette77 · 28/05/2024 03:55

Op you have handled this beautifully. I am so pissed off on your behalf.

I have no doubt you looked gorgeous at the wedding. Don't underestimate yourself. You have a good man who thinks you're the most beautiful woman in the world. 💝

CottonCandyLand · 28/05/2024 04:53

Tigertigertigertiger · 27/05/2024 15:56

Let it go. Life's short

Fuck no! Why should OP roll over silently and let the cheeky fucker get away with it?
OP is absolutely right to call out shitty behaviour.

Whatineed · 28/05/2024 05:51

CharDee · 27/05/2024 21:25

I am ok thank you. I know it's a really stupid thing to be upset about but I'm just a bit low at the moment and it has knocked me a bit.

I don't think it's stupid at all. You'd been looking forward to a nice morning of being pampered for a special occasion. And you'd secured with a deposit.

You'd have been open to her being honest and finding an alternative person, she had plenty of time to do this no doubt. Hen trips to Ibiza dint just happen overnight I guess. You didn't need that stress before your friends wedding.

And the A&E story was just shitty.

Bless you DH and DN though. They sound fantastic and I'm sure you looked wonderful on the day.

RickyGervaislovesdogs · 28/05/2024 06:03

I’d have left a comment on the original post saying something like, “glad to see you’ve made it out of A&E”. She must be very stupid to think you wouldn’t find out.

On the plus side your niece and DH sound lovely. I hope you find a new hairdresser who doesn’t tell porkies!

Zonder · 28/05/2024 06:20

You could always comment saying wow so glad you made it to the airport after you had to spend the evening in A&E!

Strictlymad · 28/05/2024 07:18

Just to say your hairdresser (former hairdresser) is a poor human being but your dh sounds like an absolute gem and a deffo keeper- what a wonderful human he is who clearly loves you very much

Nanaof1 · 28/05/2024 07:20

@CharDee
Heck, I am older than dirt and I also want to be you when I grow up!

I bet you looked very nice and very natural and you have an absolute gem for a DH and niece. Work with her to get your make-up routine figured out. One for a casual time and one for the dressy times. Ditto the hair.

You all sound like a lot of fun surrounded by a lot of love. thumbs up

I got a tear reading about how your VDH treated you to some goodies and loves you so much.

LOVED your response to her. No matter how advanced our society is, we haven't nailed bi-locating; yet. 😉

HaveABlastOfThisMatrix · 28/05/2024 07:22

Your husband? Amazing.
Your niece? Amazing.
Your messages to your 'poorly' hairdresser? Bloody amazing.
Your hairdresser. Pathetic.
You in general? Absolutely bloody amazing! Grin

I hope she doesn't try to not return your money since she already spent it. She has shown herself to be very entitled and selfish.

Luckily, you have plenty of backbone and will not let her get away with it. thumbs up

The hairdresser/MUA is quite the twat waffle. 😡

OrangeAndFizz · 28/05/2024 07:30

As others suggest, I'd ask for my deposit back and find another hairdresser. There are millions out there.

If she baulks I'd send a screenshot and threaten a bad review. That should do it.

Nanaof1 · 28/05/2024 07:36

Somepeoplearesnippy · 27/05/2024 21:40

Good hairdressers (like good cleaners ) are hard to find. Give her a chance here.

Message her along the lines of 'wires seem to have been crossed,, your DH said you were ill but FB says you were on a hen (attach photo). What's going on ?!'
See what she says and then decide whether you want to continue with her or ask for your deposit back.

Because there is another reasonable explanation for her lying? Are you for real?

Just because someone is a good hairdresser, that doesn't mean they are a good enough person to clean the crap off the OP's shoes. The OP deserves SO much better and will have no trouble finding a new hairdresser. Most know what they are doing and 99% would, at the very least, be more honest.

It really sounds like the Ibiza crew have shown up with 1001 excuses.

Toptotoe · 28/05/2024 07:36

I’ve never met a hairdresser who takes a deposit and I certainly don’t think it’s appropriate with a long standing loyal customer - is this common practice?

Anyway, I’d just message her saying you want your money transferred back to you. I would just ghost her after that.

Tillievanilly · 28/05/2024 07:46

I definitely would ask for the deposit back. Clearly she knew she had messed up and should have given you notice. She could have even helped you find another hairdresser. I wouldn’t book with her again.
