And they didn’t even get furlough for it.

Spandauer · 28/05/2024 18:40

I think Diane Abbot has been treated very shabbily.

It doesn't sit well with me that the LP has accepted Natalie Elphicke with seemingly open arms but at the same time unceremoniously removed the whip from DA.

and I say that as a Labour Party member who was not/is not a fan of Corbyn and his crew.

My foster son was 18 and was working towards his A levels. We had quite decent online provision, fortunately. My DS was in Yr12 doing his school work. My DD was in first year uni, again doing their work online. Hardly dossing about. Certainly not partying, unlike some people.

BestIsWest · 28/05/2024 18:44

I think we OWE young people for what they endured during lockdown, not the other way round.

I agree re Diane Abbott. I’m not happy about how she’s been treated but on the other hand she hasn’t supported Starmer at all over the past few years. I think I’d like to see her in the Lords perhaps.

Thingscanonlygetsunk · 28/05/2024 18:38

Yes, but how many 18 year olds can say that?

See they have a point.
18 year olds were just lazying around at home on their computers all day, not even going out to walk the dog twice a day or do the shopping.

"The hard reality is that this should not be seen as a social engineering project for the “youth” – although some are now so transfixed by their phones that enforced physical exercise is probably needed – but essential to protect our nation from another fascist tyrant marching West at an ever-increasing speed. National service should not just be confined to those turning 18. Those young adults who benefited so much from lockdown and furlough – their health and jobs preserved by an enormous national effort – should be give an opportunity to thank their elders for their sacrifices."

I think that the younger generation will be paying for furlough and lockdown for a long time.

Also - what should they thank their elders for?

Completely agree.on.bkth counts

L1ttledrummergirl · 28/05/2024 18:56

They're taking the piss.

Remember the university students locked in their flats on campuses?
The GCSE students who were unable to sit exams?
Those like my ds2 who started work, only to be sent home with no redundancy because they hadn't worked long enough?
The sports and hobbies that were cancelled (while the tories continued to party)?

They don't owe us anything for the covid years, they had those years stolen and can now give their opinion at the ballot box.
Is it any wonder that they appear more politically motivated than previous generations at their age?

I agree with you. I’m really unhappy about this. It’s very disappointing.

Agree
l’m disappointed about Diane especially as they welcomed Natalie Elphicke seems very hypocritical.
my granddaughter started school sept 2020 she was out of school more than she was in it, she was in small bubbles so effectively kept away from a lot of her peers, we weren’t allowed inside the school or the playground never visited the school or saw her classroom/teacher beforehand she didn’t properly settle into school until yr2 really don’t think her first year or so experiences helped, it was so difficult for young people of all ages.

pointythings · 28/05/2024 19:03

That Telegraph writer is utterly delusional. The young put their lives on hold to protect those who were more vulnerable to COVID and its complications, so who is it that should be thanking whom here?

Very disappointed about the way Diane Abbott is being treated. I don't agree with her on very much, but this is not OK.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2024 19:07

I agree with the disappointment on how Diane Abbott is being treated.

Here's a novel idea: what about asking the 18+ cohort what they need in the way of help instead of implicitly assuming it? Or considering them the enemy as the Tories seem to?

My guess will be something along the lines of more apprenticeships & opportunities, better mental health services and affordable rents.

Investing in young people instead of beating them down makes fiscal sense. They are the future.

SerendipityJane · 28/05/2024 19:19

Incidentally, is it just me that is wondering how COVID affected the demographics of voters ?

The radio silence makes me suspect it's something like Brexit that all parties have decided to swerve.

IClaudine · 28/05/2024 19:20

I agree with all of you about young people and about Diane Abbott.

I understand that discussions re Diane Abbott are still ongoing.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2024 19:36

I saw the same

Labour sources suggesting Diane Abbott decision has not been made. They say still waiting NEC decision.

But then Cleverley can't also berate them for being in a bubble. They made them go into one quite literally.

I think both topics had a lot of misinformation from Russia coursing through the internet at the time, which went in all directions and rarely made much sense. I think it's hard for any party to unpick what was bot and what was crazy or both.

There are ways and means of getting the rich to pay more tax.
The question was clearly a trap looking for a sound bite in the vein of "Starmer wants to take money off hardworking families and give it to scroungers", or "Starmer is mates with the rich and won't tax them".
Looks like he refused to be drawn on tax until he's had a proper look at the figures, which is very on brand for Starmer.
I doubt he'll do much at all on tax for at least the first year, to let the dust settle on the current chaos.

Exactly.

He's not going to give a "Starmer will raise taxes whilst we chase those avoiding it" headline to them.

Hasn't Sunak announced today that he is going to raise taxes on everyone except some pensioners?
