Thread 46 Sunak - don't rain on our parade
InMySpareTime · 28/05/2024 15:18

There's always the argument that tax rises on higher earners can lead to perverse incentives to divert income to pensions etc instead of paying tax, so it's never quite as simple as "tax high incomes".
This already happens around the £100k level, they could raise money by tinkering with personal allowance tapers and tax free childcare, blurring the cliff edge at £100k so it starts earlier but tapers more gently perhaps.

I have to agree, I thought this was the push behind the whole campaign - finally we were going to get people who should be paying more to contribute. Isn't it what is meant to be driving the private school VAT policy too?

Is he still going after the biggest tax avoiders such as Amazon/Starbucks/Facebook? I did wonder why he hasn't led with this, as surely popular and will give huge amounts back to the state sector.

I feel like I am missing something too.

The historical tax rates have been massively higher in the past with no problem. It sounds like Starmer has gotten the backing of being the next PM by kowtowing to the rich and powerful, as is proper.

Meet the new boss, same as the old boss etc.

InMySpareTime · 28/05/2024 15:31

There are ways and means of getting the rich to pay more tax.
The question was clearly a trap looking for a sound bite in the vein of "Starmer wants to take money off hardworking families and give it to scroungers", or "Starmer is mates with the rich and won't tax them".
Looks like he refused to be drawn on tax until he's had a proper look at the figures, which is very on brand for Starmer.
I doubt he'll do much at all on tax for at least the first year, to let the dust settle on the current chaos.

countrygirl99 · 28/05/2024 15:36

I'm pretty sure some of the very high tax rates in the past did cause problems. If nothing else they contributed to the complexities we are still trying to grapple with as more and more special exemptions and allowances were thought up. In the 1970s the government even used to issue special bonds with a very low for the time nominal interest rate so that at redemption they created capital gains at a piddling rate of tax.

Absolutely agree

Don't frighten the horses

The right time isn't now

Yes, we’ll see what he actually does once in. Will be keeping an eye on this.

The police are not expected to take any further action against Angela Rayner. Just on the BBC now. Hope James Daly gets his comeuppance by losing his seat for wasting police time.

IClaudine · 28/05/2024 15:53

Was just coming to say the same @JoJothegerbil

The Ange haters will be so fucked off!🥳

The Conservatives should pay for the police time wasted on this.

BIossomtoes · 28/05/2024 15:56

It was 105. He’s toast now.

tobee · 28/05/2024 15:57

Just as we expected.

DuncinToffee · 28/05/2024 15:59

cakeorwine · 28/05/2024 16:04

I bet this won't get much headlines in those papers that were very keen to raise awareness of the allegations.

A certain poster whom I shall not summon still thinks HMRC will go after her.

Who by ? The biggest single group wasting police time is the police.

I guess they might be upset with the competition.

My thoughts are with Dan Hodges at this difficult time.
