I am no Starmer fan, he is too centrist for my tastes. But I think he is a decent man who realises the sheer hellish scale of the job in front of him. I admire him for not making promises he can't keep and for admitting that some of the things he initially wanted to do won't be possible.

I was going to vote Plaid, but I am wavering now and will probably vote Labour. Some of the astroturfing that has been going on this week has made me want to be 100% sure we get rid of the Tories.

I could have written that. It’s definitely about pragmatism right now.

IClaudine · 26/05/2024 15:47

I thought adults didn’t fall into magical thinking

I am not sure why you feel the need to insult people. But anyway, "magical thinking" is imagining that the mess we are in right now can be quickly or easily reversed, it is going to take years. So there may need to be short term compromises. Unless Starmer does a Harry Perkins and gets Putin to lend us the cash (you may not be old enough to get the reference!).

BIossomtoes · 26/05/2024 15:48

I’ll take what I can get. As long as the next government isn’t Tory I’m not particularly fussy about who leads it.

I agree about massive investment.

But even if we had all the money we needed at our disposal, we can't grow doctors, nurses, radiologists, histopathologists, surgeons, MRIs CTs, beds, wards, operating theatres etc. etc. etc. overnight. There has to be something to fill the gap.

This is where we are basically only able to have a system today by poaching talent from abroad. I found out off a Portuguese co-worker that a lot of their dentists are now coming to the UK to take advantage of the deficit in new dental clinicians here. The NHS is just generally being operated in a very reactive fashion as consequence of such low investment and thought put into every aspect of the system.

Pay shit wages on expensive training requirement jobs? Wonder why no one does the role. Real mind bender that.

Well yes. 14 years of the Tories has led us to this. Not easy to put right. We can't let people suffer while we do so - hence having to utilise the private sector.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 26/05/2024 16:24

People are sick, in pain and suffering, wallowing on the NHS waiting list. It's monstrous. Any government that doesn't look at every available option for getting people treated asap has no business being in government. Hence why the tories are facing anhilation.

I'm beginning to think Sunak is going to cross the floor to Labour he's doing such a good job at making sure Tory's don't win!

tobee · 26/05/2024 16:36

Thanks @DuncinToffee

Starmer doesn't 180°.

He did a brilliant interview on R4 the other morning where he explained he wants to do x,y and z. But the more debt we get into and the fact he won't do anything I costed the more he's had to decide x and y are priorities and he needs to start with x.

He also said in an ideal world where money is no object he'd do x,y and z. He stands by believing we need x,y and z. But he also stands by not running up more debt and doing things we can't afford.

It was the best speech and most honest speech I've heard from an MP or PM for years.

Oh god. I almost want to sign up to tik tok to read the responses. Young people aren't going to like the way he is talking down to them.

DuncinToffee · 26/05/2024 17:14

I thought they banned tiktok on government devices?

Think the influx of squirrels have begun. Odd choice of topic though considering who's been in charge of it for 14 years!

I actually can't think of a single thing the Tories have done that they can hold up as a resounding success in the entire 14 years.

Be fair, austerity has meant that the rich have got significantly richer, which is mostly what they pay their party donations for, that and the opportunity to play dressing up occasionally in the House of Lords.

Thingscanonlygetsunk · 26/05/2024 17:18

DuncinToffee · 26/05/2024 15:43

I haven't seen his name being mentioned anywhere so probably not.

Would it be a good look for Sunak having the crowd singing "Things can only get better"?

Probably not, so I bet with his strategic acumen he is probably there.

cardibach · 26/05/2024 15:43

I have a feeling that Starmer is further left than the pragmatic policies currently being discussed suggest. Pragmatism is needed because the electorate is fairly centrist and most particularly because there is no money.

The manifesto will be interesting. Will HoL scrapping be in? VAT on school fees is I think a given. How far will it go on employment rights?

I think it should be played where ever he goes. I have it on my phone for such an emergency.

"Pragmatism is needed because the electorate is fairly centrist and most particularly because there is no money.'

And because the last 14 years have broken any trust with politicians and made us cynics. I appreciate the pledges might seem unambitious but I'd rather than for now than unworkable promises. We know there is a lot of work to be done.

countrygirl99 · 26/05/2024 17:53

ShambalaAnna · 26/05/2024 15:40

Obviously not. What kind of questioning is this?

I point out that Labour aren’t exactly squeaky clean, now have to undergo the fifth degree because I didn’t do the standard “and fuck the Tories” comment as an aside? Coming from
the north, let me tell you, no Tory fuck has ever gotten my vote and I voted Labour at the two previous elections.

Let’s not be naïve here. Labour today are not the same as even 2019. The Blairites have purged any opposition out now, and that’s concerning.

No quick fix. That’s your answer. Things will get worse before they get better. Sorry that answer ruffles feathers, I thought adults didn’t fall into magical thinking.

So what is your suggestion if utilising private facilities isn't acceptable. Or ate you just hot air as I suspect?

I see Boozo the 🤡 has popped out to B & M for some shopping, times must be hard for Daily Mail columnists.

Cost of living crisis affects even ex PM's. Can't afford Waitrose prices anymore for some ' bits'
( I often come out with more than I went in for as well )

TheFirmBiscuit · 26/05/2024 18:32

Probably the most doomed campaign in my 63 years of life - even the Torygraph can't be bothered. Remarkable.
