No. It isn’t.

You just need to enable more integration with private sector parties, you don’t just hand the keys to GE Healthcare of Aviva or something. They’ve done this in literally every public institution we have, and it’s never a good sign to introduce profit seeking entities into a public good.

Go ask the military.

Who has done it? Starmer? When did he get the authority for that?
’More integration’ doesn’t sound like what I want really - private healthcare is separate and should stay so. We can just do deals to use parts of it short term to reduce waiting lists. Again - what’s your solution otherwise?

There must be a name for the logical fallacy you just committed. Let me just go look it up.

Whereas you clearly think more of the same will improve the NHS in some way.
That's not at all illogical.

@ShambalaAnna who was it again that privatised water, electricity, gas, trains, the post office, probation services (though that one went so wrong they rolled it back!)

Little hint for you: Not Labour.

dontcallmelen · 26/05/2024 15:18

Wasn’t it Thatcher who started selling off the “Family Silver” & subsequent Tory government’s who continued selling like a bunch of spivs they are, hence the current shambles in all of the services/utilities.
also I’m a bit fed up of Starmer being accused of U turning, it’s sensible considering the state of this country which appears to worsen each day under these fuckwits.

AS is SO useful!

prettybird · 26/05/2024 15:20

One of the many things that Starmer has pissed me off about was him going on about one in seven Scots are on a waiting list and that this was an indictment of the SNP Government in Holyrood. Hmm

Given that Scotland is dependent on its pocket money budget allocation from Westminster and that one in seven are on waiting lists in England, then I'm not sure what point he is making Confused

However, people only hear the sound bites and the expressed criticism and don't check the background facts for themselves Hmm

I'm not saying that the NHS is perfect up here - but by most measures, it is doing a damn sight better than the NHS in England.

For example: ds' girlfriend was in an out within an hour on Wednesday at A&E, rang for a GP appointment the following morning and was seen in person by the GP at 11.20 (although the "priority" ultrasound which probably won't even identify the issue which needs an MRI Hmm has a waiting list of 3 months Sad), dh and I were both seen by a new NHS dentist in the last couple of months (which reminds me: ds and his girlfriend need to register with them as dentistry is free for them until they turn 26), pharmacies can dispense basic antibiotics and other medications free of charge which in turn takes the pressure off GPs....

Having let go off that rant Wink, if I lived in England, I'd be voting tactically to get out the Tory if I lived in a currently Conservative constituency.

prettybird · 26/05/2024 15:21

Oops - wish I was on the browser so I could edit. Blush

One in FIVE are on waiting lists in England. Shock

IClaudine · 26/05/2024 15:22

I am no Starmer fan, he is too centrist for my tastes. But I think he is a decent man who realises the sheer hellish scale of the job in front of him. I admire him for not making promises he can't keep and for admitting that some of the things he initially wanted to do won't be possible.

I was going to vote Plaid, but I am wavering now and will probably vote Labour. Some of the astroturfing that has been going on this week has made me want to be 100% sure we get rid of the Tories.

ShambalaAnna · 26/05/2024 15:02

That’s not what I said. You don’t have to “sell it off” to let private capital ruin it. Thought that was abundantly clear these days.

This is Wes Streeting’s current plan, to utilise more private components within the NHS.

And the practical alternative in the shirt term is what? Because what the Tories are doing certainly isn't working.

dontcallmelen · 26/05/2024 15:29

I feel the same about Starmer, agree he does appear to be a decent human being I’d rather Labour be braver & much more radical but I expect that would frighten a lot of voters.

countrygirl99 · 26/05/2024 15:29

Notonthestairs · 26/05/2024 15:05

Sorry, that is 7.5 million on waiting lists.

On of which is my mum who has been waiting 7 months for a cardiology referral.

There is no short term solution here. Labour are the best shot in our system, but they are Tory lite these days.

Massive investment in just about everyone that has been neglected would be a nice start.

And while we wait for that to work do you think we should let waiting lists continue to grow? Or what?

tobee · 26/05/2024 15:33

Watching the Southampton playoff final but missed the beginning and not 100% commentating. Anyone know if Sunak at Wembley?

tobee · 26/05/2024 15:36

Concentrating. Obviously not commentating.

To be fair, you have been posting since the 18th. How odd though, to get your own posting history wrong.

L1ttledrummergirl · 26/05/2024 15:38

Apologies, my advanced search said nothing further back than yesterday.
The extra couple of days make all the difference. Confused

HannibalHeyes · 26/05/2024 15:38

How exciting! We have our own pet shill!

fabio12 · 26/05/2024 15:39

Think the influx of squirrels have begun. Odd choice of topic though considering who's been in charge of it for 14 years!

I actually can't think of a single thing the Tories have done that they can hold up as a resounding success in the entire 14 years.

ShambalaAnna · 26/05/2024 15:40

countrygirl99 · 26/05/2024 15:32

Obviously not. What kind of questioning is this?

I point out that Labour aren’t exactly squeaky clean, now have to undergo the fifth degree because I didn’t do the standard “and fuck the Tories” comment as an aside? Coming from
the north, let me tell you, no Tory fuck has ever gotten my vote and I voted Labour at the two previous elections.

Let’s not be naïve here. Labour today are not the same as even 2019. The Blairites have purged any opposition out now, and that’s concerning.

No quick fix. That’s your answer. Things will get worse before they get better. Sorry that answer ruffles feathers, I thought adults didn’t fall into magical thinking.

I agree about massive investment.

But even if we had all the money we needed at our disposal, we can't grow doctors, nurses, radiologists, histopathologists, surgeons, MRIs CTs, beds, wards, operating theatres etc. etc. etc. overnight. There has to be something to fill the gap.

I haven't seen his name being mentioned anywhere so probably not.
