Unpopular opinion

I'll go first ...

B&M is over rated

Most of the home decor is tacky
I can get cleaning products at in the supermarket without a separate trip.
It's not super cheap like people say when you really compare the prices

Harry Potter is shite
Adele has disappeared up her own arse
Kids are boring
Primark smells “cheap”

Fatnold · 22/05/2024 14:44

95% of what is taught at schools is fucking pointless.

I watch about 3,000 hours of true crime documentaries a week (give or take)
I cannot tell you how many times adult male gamers are the murderer.
Just keep an eye on them, that's all I'm saying.🧐

Lol, I also watch 3000 h of true crime tv a week… while DH plays his video games. Suits us just fine! I would hate for him to judge my excessive TV consumption!

Mumsnet have too many dog haters.

Hmm

I don’t see that as an unpopular opinion

surely that’s an opinion based only on personal value and not fact

screen time is seemingly causing a huge amount of issues in developing children and young tweens / teens

i think giving kids a phone - even as young tweens is a ticking time bomb for many, not all, but many.

early sexualisation, anxiety, exposure to inappropriate material, stress etc

it shouldn’t create an atmosphere of conflict to put rules in place to create a safe environment for children.

would be interested to hear your thoughts on it? ( not being snarky by the way- genuinely interested).

I guess that’s why I consider it an unpopular opinion as mumsnet seems to be very pro strict limits.
I don’t think boundaries around tech are a bad thing, or natural limits like doing other things as a family or involving dc in extra curricular activities. But arbitrary lines or heavy handed time limits I don’t think are helpful. I’ve seen so much conflict between parents and dc around it, whereas I mostly just let mine self regulate. I also gave them phones from around age 9/10. It hasn’t been entirely hiccup free, but it worked out ok for us (youngest is now 17).

I have never understood the love people have for avocadoes.

Bloody love avocados 🥑 so does DH and DS. Struggle to keep up with supply and demand in this house, especially with the rock hard 'ripe and ready' deliveries from Tesco 🤦🏻‍♀️

qotsa · 22/05/2024 15:37

@TinySmol I am laughing (through my tears) at the UK for leaving the EU. Pisses me off most days. All DH and I wanted to do was sell up and buy a cheap place in Portugal in a few years.

mossylog · 22/05/2024 15:45

A different kind of unpopular opinion is private judgements that you've made that it would be rude to openly express. Like...

  • "I don't think you're consciously faking these chronic illnesses but they're functional symptoms and constructing your whole sense of self around being in the sick role is making them worse"
  • "The conspiracies/woo/religion that you believe in seems very unlikely and I'm honestly not sure what's led you here"
  • "You always have low energy and so you snack all the time but getting fat from snacking is contributing to your low energy"

Something else that's funny is I'd completely forgotten that many serial killers have been shown to obsessed with true crime.
Ahem..

Cat owners are selfish for allowing cats to roam into other people's gardens and use them as their personal litter.
Cats should not be allowed to roam

Tea is vile

Ice cream is bland

London is over-rated

Unless you attend a selective independent or public school, education in England is lacking

The royal family should be abolished; it perpetuates social and class division, undemocratic, unaccountable and undemocratic

What did they do on phone at 9/10? Did they make calls / text friends of play?

I have a strong instinct not to give a phone at that age.. however the pressure is there, seems children in class are starting to be given them.

wondering what age others give them- maybe I should start a thread about it

There are only 2 sexes

ToWhitToWhoo · 22/05/2024 17:56

The concept of 'significant' 'milestone' birthdays should be abolished. I know I'm getting older; I don't need other people rubbing it in.

Men with exaggeratedly bulging muscles look revolting, not sexy.

Most nostalgia is misplaced. As I always say, things ain't what they used to be- and they never were.

IKEA Malm drawers are the best we’ve had - lasted 3 moves and 12yrs. Paid a lot more for others that have been shite

Yes they are very good

I completely agree with you re B&M, I've never liked it. Home Bargains is much better.

My unpopular opinion is that polyester clothing looks and feels cheap and unpleasant - either slimy or scratchy in texture. Why are high street brands putting so much plastic in our clothing? Wouldn't natural fibres be a) more comfortable and b) more environmentally friendly?

I agree with both points. Jumpers and t-shirts I've ordered from Temu feel horrible. Now I search for cotton

Lorrainedrops · 22/05/2024 18:33

Agree... too many labels.

People who post ‘what colour are my eyes’ with a close up of their eyeball are attention seeking twats.

Agree 😆

Radio4andChocolate · 22/05/2024 18:45

I have another one:

It's not flattering to joke/pretend a woman looks younger than she is, or presume she will be coy about revealing her age and so on. I am the age I am, it's not a moral judgement on me. It's not a great compliment to act as though I look younger (whether I actually do or not is irrelevant, I'm talking about the way other people use it as a compliment). I'm not proud of my age, I'm not embarrassed by it, it's just an accidental part of me, stop trying to make it into a thing where the younger I look, the happier I should be.

BooBooDoodle · 22/05/2024 19:38

Oasis (the band) are shit and have always been shit, their music sounds samey and they can’t carry a tune in a bucket 😉

For the most part, kept in touch with their other parent, plus extended family. Took pictures. Played games (younger one anyway, the older one started out with a dumb phone..) Gradually used it to text friends (it was a fairly typical age to get a phone). Text / called me when they were out. They were a bit older when they first got any social media though.

Maybe that’s my unpopular opinion.. dc need a phone (and in this day and age a smartphone) by the time they start secondary school at the latest.

My dc needs his phone for different apps at school. He's in year 7.

My youngest is 11 in Jan and he will get a phone for either Christmas or his birthday

I’m probably going to get banned now for saying this but here goes….

I think the concept of a ‘god’ is as legitimate as garden fairies. I can’t believe how many adults worldwide actually believe. It would be ok but the problems different faiths cause are catastrophic.

The problems no faith causes are pretty catastrophic - Pol Pot, Stalin, Putin, Kim il Sung in North Korea, Mao.....
The values of the west are built on the Judeo Christian faith. There are many intellectuals who have researched the historicity of Christ, found Him to be real and have decided to follow Him ( eg check John Lennox - Emeritus Professor of Mathematics[2] at the University of Oxford, an Emeritus Fellow in Mathematics and Philosophy of Science at Green Templeton College, Oxford University, and has worked as adjunct lecturer at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford University and at the Oxford Centre for Christian Apologetics. He is also an Associate Fellow of the Saïd Business School and a Senior Fellow at the Trinity Forum.)

Jesus has had a huge impact on so many people from the time He lived until today.
