Hornchurch: Woman dies in XL bully attack at home www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-69041493

She was the owner and sounds like she had a couple of them. They were registered but clearly that doesn't and didn't stop this preventable death.

@YellowHairband

personal choice
personal responsibility

how much govt legislation do you want in your own home? It's a slippery slope.

I could be a home with small children. Who is standing up for their rights?

Willmafrockfit · 21/05/2024 10:32

vet's refused?
fgs

I'd refuse too.

Why should they put themselves in danger?

OzziePopPop · 21/05/2024 11:06

Cocopogo · 21/05/2024 10:09

Unfortunately she didn’t have much but the fact she had identified the risks and was reaching out for help (before the ban) was real progress for her.

So she was so poor she had to ask others to pay for euthanasia but not poor enough to qualify for pdsa or similar free vet treatment? I know they’re not everywhere but there are other, similar, low cost vet schemes nationwide.

fieldsofbutterflies · 21/05/2024 11:08

@Willmafrockfit - yes, many ( understandably) don't agree with putting healthy dogs to sleep.

I'm not sure how I'd feel if I had to spend my working day doing that to a dog that (at that point) had no issues - it can't be easy, even if it's the "right" thing long-term.

I think it's important to remember that vets are people too and most of them aren't going to happily kill healthy animals.

IMO if the government wanted all these dogs euthanised they should have done it themselves, not passed the buck.

Most XL Bullies that have killed are a genetic link to a stud called Killer Kimbo. Killer Kimbo was a result of a sibling mating, and throws the sudden rage gene desired by the fighting community that these dogs were bred for. Owners need to check through breeding lines ro make sure their dog isn't from this line. The sudden rage gene is what makes then dangerous, as it mean that your beloved dog can switch without provocation, and I've seen this happen first hand.
And to be cold, as least it was her that was killed by her dogs, not an outsider, which means the legislation is working.

Edited

Sadly, I think it is impossible now to check if a dog is descended from KK. Too much (in)breeding, most of it illegal

TallulahBetty · 21/05/2024 11:11

PurpleBugz · 21/05/2024 07:52

Maybe they need to look at how the breeding industry works. When I bought my cockerpoo the breeder told me if I ever want her to have puppies check their pedigree as her father was a very common stud poodle. Maybe there should be limits on how many litters a stud can sire before we ruin more dog breeds with inbreeding

The kind of people who have XLBs, don't care about the genetics of the thing.

SherrieElmer · 21/05/2024 11:12

I am going to sound brutal but I am just sick of this vile dog breed.

Accidents like this one when the owner ends up dead are the only way that could eventually culminate in dog owners snapping out of it and proceeding to get rid of these evil creatures.

The rest of the members of the public are fully aware of the dangers of these animals and don't need convincing. It is just the thick owners who are blatantly reckless who need to learn the lesson, and they will only learn it the hard way.

So, yes, sorry for the loss, but from a strategic perspective we are one step closer to the elimination of the species.

@Hoppinggreen

theres something not quite right there. XL bullies don't TRY to attack people. If it wanted the camera man, it would have had him.

Well no, not if it is muzzled. I watched a xl go for two small dogs, it was muzzled, so couldn’t, but there is absolutely no doubt in what it was trying to do. The speed, aggression, suddenness of the lunge. It was trying to attack the dogs, the fact it was muzzled is what stopped it. The Strong man holding the lead pulled it back, but if it wasn’t muzzled those dogs would have died, the attack would have been successful, and fast. The man wouldn’t have been able to stop it, it was so so fast. The little dogs were not doing anything other than in the vicinity with their owner. They didn’t even approach the dog, steered clear. The xl was looking the other way then whipped round and lunged with a ferocious speed.

Interestingly, I thought this breed was typically owned by young men with a 'hard' image. But what I've seen a lot of is middle-aged women saying 'He's so soft, he's my baby'. They have a whole group local to me and meet up and have big mass 'xl bully' walks (muzzled) and a lot of them are women.

I feel sorry for the woman who was killed, it's a horrific way to go.”

Sorry but I don’t. She kept two monsters, knowing what they were capable of.
I feel sorry for the people who had to deal with the aftermath.

I agree with this, I don’t feel sorry for her, she chose to keep them knowing what this abomination of a ‘breed’, is capable of.

The outcry when these things were to be muzzled absolutely baffled me. ‘Land hippo, velvet hippo, soft as butter’ etc etc were all trotted out on social media and various forums.

Trixiefirecracker · 21/05/2024 08:37

Sorry, but she shouldn’t t have had the dog in the first place if she couldn’t afford vet bills.

100% this

The only XL bully owners I know are women who describe themselves as living in "dangerous, pro crime" areas.

Both with kids, both with criminal records and both always pleading poverty.

Hippos are an apt comparison, they're bloody lethal.

hotpotlover · 21/05/2024 11:35

My husband is a Meter engineer and was bitten on the arm by one of those charming dogs. Thank God he wore protective clothing and it was only a superficial injury.

The owner locked them away in her house, but one of them broke free while him and his colleague were working in the garden.

It kills me to think what could have happened

It gives them some sort of higher purpose

PuppiesProzacProsecco · 21/05/2024 11:38

Dear god. This is terrifying. My PILs have a beautiful big (rescued) dog who pretty much meets XL Bully criteria though she is a bit less barrel chested and longer in the leg than the "typical" XL.

She's genuinely the sweetest dog I ever met and is terrified of her own shadow. Like so scared she pees herself and runs away squealing if the cat spits at her.

Based on this Killer Kimbo stuff, she could just flip someday if he's in her bloodline? Our big squishy faced, submissive softie? That's beyond scary. Especially as we have no way of knowing her pedigree.... Our only choice is to PTS if we want to be certain. I could literally cry.

They should have called for volunteers. I’d have offered (not a vet, but I’m quite a good shot).

fieldsofbutterflies · 21/05/2024 11:41

She absolutely could @PuppiesProzacProsecco - every single XL bully says the same as you until their dog flips and rips someone's throat out.

She had one and that is probably debatable. But anyway that’s a whole other thread.
The issue is the police etc left an XL bully with someone who couldn’t control it who had two young children and was begging for help regardless of the prior circumstances this is not acceptable.

Fizbosshoes · 21/05/2024 12:03

I heard dj spoony on the radio defending and saying how wonderful his XL bully was and how unbearable it would be to muzzle it
He said it would trust it with young children and he's a big softy who needs big hugs! 🙄

Good grief! Poor man - I hope he's not too traumatised.

When reading about the woman I was thinking well at least it was her and not an unfortunate postie or meter man.

PanettoneSoprano · 21/05/2024 12:48

fieldsofbutterflies · 21/05/2024 07:30

Well, exactly.

It's still not a popular view to hold though. I work with dogs and I find anyone who expresses a negative view of XL's in that community still gets criticised for being judgmental about the breed.

This is so true. I was in the vets a few weeks ago and someone had brought an XL in and all the staff were fawning over the hulking beast and saying this "cutie" wouldnt hurt a fly. I couldn't get me, child and dog away fast enough.

Upinthenightagain · 21/05/2024 12:50

Meanwhile over on instagram Vicki Pattison is urging people to donate money for life saving surgery on an XL bully

Perfectpots · 21/05/2024 12:56

Awful news.

And, looking at the bbc link in the 1st post, still there are so called dog experts claiming that the breed can be trained.
I must admit there are many aspects of dog ownership that I just don't get.

OneLemonOrca · 21/05/2024 12:57

They must’ve just been really hungry 🤷‍♀️
