Hornchurch: Woman dies in XL bully attack at home www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-london-69041493

She was the owner and sounds like she had a couple of them. They were registered but clearly that doesn't and didn't stop this preventable death.

My sympathy is for the poor lady and her family, its absolutely horific.
A lot of these owners are absolutely deluded though - there was a news segmant featuring a lady who was complaining about the new legislation around these dogs and while the reporters were quite fair it was very obvious that the lady couldn't control her "big softy" and after the segment the reporter said that just after the cameras stopped the dog tried to attack th camera man.
I have a large breed but they are known for being very good family dogs and rarely if ever feature in attacks but I know he has teeth and claws the same as a dog that is generally seen to be "scary" and we always treat that with respect.

@Hoppinggreen

theres something not quite right there. XL bullies don't TRY to attack people. If it wanted the camera man, it would have had him.

I'd wondered before about there being a rage syndrome in these dogs. But was told by other posters there was no such thing in this breed.

But I can't quite let go of the idea, because it fits the pattern of attacks (previously calm, and then just turning without warning) and goes with the appalling level of in-breeding.

I don't know why it would be difficult to accept that rage syndrome is a possibility. Amongst the muppetheads for whom this type of dog is a status symbol, it would be seen as a positive attribute and bred for - as, indeed, seems to have been the case. We know the syndrome (potentially caused by a gene, or several genes working in combination) exists in other breeds, so why not XL bullies?

@Cocopogo

its a worry for the children's sake it wasn't removed immediately, but why did she expect it to be euthanised for free, where was her responsibility in this??

Unfortunately she didn’t have much but the fact she had identified the risks and was reaching out for help (before the ban) was real progress for her.

Obviously an awful thing to happen but at least it wasn’t an innocent stranger. If you’re stupid enough to own one of these you have to accept the risk that it might kill you”

Quite.

There's one that must live near me as I've seen it a few times now. It is dog reactive so when it sees my dog it goes absolutely ballistic. The woman walking it is slim and I do worry that her weight/strength isn't enough to anchor it while it's trying to get to my dog. To make it worse, the woman carries its muzzle in her hand. Not much good if it's not wearing the bloody thing.

I'd try to get some surreptitious video footage and give it to the Police.

SinnerBoy · 21/05/2024 10:16

I feel sorry for the woman who was killed, it's a horrific way to go.

That said, as others have, she chose to have them and was the author of her own demise, thank God no other person was harmed. She made her own Darwin Award, unfortunately.

Churchview · 21/05/2024 10:17

Just looking at the photo of that dog in the Telegraph article, why oh why would anyone want that animal lose in their lives. It looks like a killer - it is a killer. Nobody would want a lion or shark in their life, why these dogs?

I adore dogs, grew up with dogs, but am terrified of these animals. I cross the street to avoid them.

A man I know's saluki was attacked by two bull mastiff dogs almost to the point of death. The woman walking the dogs never let go of the leads when the attack happened and they dragged her down the road in the process so that she had to be taken away in an ambulance. She was unable to control her own dogs. She still has them, muzzled and all three wear high viz. She still has them!!!

I am going off the voice over from the Reporter, perhaps it lunged? It did have a muzzle on
Either way it was slightly ironic that a piece designed to show how unfair the new legislation was proved the opposite, although it is possible that the dog owner was being set up as her situation ticked a lot of boxes

I think there should be a much lower threshold for removing dogs. That man that was killed in his mother's garden by two XL bullies from next door last year - the owner had had police round twice to speak to him about the dogs. Given how hard it is to get police to come out, I think it's a relatively safe assumption that the incidents they were there about were reasonably serious. Why did he still have them??

were people expected to pay for euthanasia?

When the ban came in, you could get vouchers or government payments to euthanise your dog, but lots of vets refused to do it.

Crikey! What an idiot.

@Churchview unfortunately dog on dog attacks still aren't taken seriously Sad

Arraminta · 21/05/2024 10:29

An important life lesson I have learned is that You Can't Argue With Stupid. This is the harsh consequence of the owner's stupid actions. No different to having a loaded gun in your home then being amazed that someone ends up shot.

Sorry but I don’t. She kept two monsters, knowing what they were capable of.
I feel sorry for the people who had to deal with the aftermath.

rainbowbee · 21/05/2024 10:34

I went to a dog show some years ago and heard the trainer of an XL Bully say that his one was different. His one was trained and socialised. Wouldn't hurt a fly. Yet even so the dog was chained and muzzled. Unfortunately bully breeds are also often bought by thugs who will do none of the above. It needs stopped. The poor woman.

she had a family,
probably not her personal responsibility for the dogs but she has been killed by the dogs.
so sad
also Hornchurch, now in London?

paisley256 · 21/05/2024 10:44

I think Hornchurch used to be classed as Essex but is now Greater London. I think.

PTSDBarbiegirl · 21/05/2024 10:45

Would it be OK to switch on an unattended angle grinder or chainsaw in your living room and see what happened. How about 2 wolves or mountain lions. Sadly for the dogs they need to all be put to sleep.

yes, i knew it as essex so i was surprised, another boundary change

SlothsNeverGetIll · 21/05/2024 10:46

When it's the owner who gets killed, I have to be honest and say my response is 🤷🏼‍♀️
I don't want to die by animal attack, so choose not to own an XL Bully or a lion or a bear or a shark or a hyena or any other species of animal that can rip me limb from limb.
I own a sensible little dog with a sweet personality and a weak jaw.

SherrieElmer · 21/05/2024 10:47

Darwin never sleeps.

Upinthenightagain · 21/05/2024 10:50

One of my DD’s friends has one of these dogs. I am absolutely terrified that she might go to this friend’s house after school without my knowledge. The dog is huge. I don’t think people realise how big they are irl because they look similar to other smaller types on photos. It’s terrifying when you see them in the flesh

Churchview · 21/05/2024 10:55

@Upinthenightagain I would worry about that too.

They are huge aren't they. Built like lions.
