I remember a friend who'd studied law saying his lecturer, in the first ever lecture, telling the students that any resemblance between justice and the law was purely coincidental. Shock

To be fair, he went on to elaborate that good law was written to be as close to "justice" as practicable.

Remember the difference between equality and equity ?

It's similar to law and justice.

I think the Tories have believed their own hype that everyone with non-white skin is part of a peado-ring gang out to get all of our kids. They've ignored the fact it's a white family man's crime if you look at the prison population. As you say the refusal to educate children about sexual abuse while they are actually children says a lot about who they think should have control in this situation.

They're consistently refusing to curb internet porn accesses despite rising addiction levels leading to erectile dysfunction and rising sexual violence against women. Then, again, refusing to educate kids on the dangers of it and how it changes the physiology of the brain, let alone the legal consequences of strangling someone during a sex act that wasn't so popular 10 years ago.

More and more deciding not to have kids with plenty of reasons why.

Not quite. It’s more complex than that. Of course the thing that’s not complex at all is that it’s always men. Predatory men.

They seem to differentiate between paedo grooming and paedo rings. Frankly it’s all paedo men to me.

British-Pakistani researchers have found that 84% of all people convicted since 2005 for the specific crime of gang grooming were Asian.

The Quilliam Foundation found that the demographic background of those who exploit youngsters in a paedophile ring was different to those who act in grooming gangs.

According to the most recent figures, released in 2012 by the National Crime Agency's Child Exploitation and Online Protection Command (CEOP), 100% of child sex offenders in paedophile rings were white.

Grooming gang convictions '84% Asian', say researchers

A think-tank report finds there is a demographic link to those who sexually exploit children in grooming gangs.

Not hugely surprising but apparently SSue Grey has a 'shit list' of stuff that needs addressing pdq but which will pose massive problems for any incoming government - includes the local government £4bn deficit, £12bn shortfall in NHS spending on infrastructure, the fact that 99% of prisons are full, junor doctors and ASLEF staff pay, & Thames water.

If Labour do win the election the sheer scale of the issues is going to be overwhelming. We should have begun building more prisons long before now. Ditto reservoirs (appreciate this is a bit left field but am astonished to learn we havent built a new reservoir in the last 30 years).

Notonthestairs · 21/05/2024 16:33

The Shit List doesn't seem to mention SEND or social care which also needs immediate attention in my view.

I've probably got more to add to the list...

IClaudine · 21/05/2024 16:38

I fully expect to see a MN thread "Should the unemployed be sent to training bootcamps?"

It is all tired, meaningless, regurgitated soundbites. Just call a GE for fuck's sake.

In fairness 2015 probably wasnt the first time they announced this. I imagine Thatcher, Major etc had similar. As you say its at that point in the election cycle that they start buffing up old failed policies.

Dog duty - paid! Awaiting rescue from this Tory shitshow.

@DuncinToffee not quite sure what you expect me to take away from that BBC article? I didn’t see anything to contradict the data I posted above, from SKY News.

PS. If you’re going to extract the bit about definition of ‘Asian’, spare me.

Yep. Availability of water, particularly in the SE is likely to be an important issue. One which we are currently ignoring. If the summer is as dry as last year I suspect a lot of people will be questioning why there are water shortages when it’s just rained for the last 6 months.

Just thought you might be interested in a more recent study

Not sure what you are implying with your PS?

No implications at all.

Re Gibraltar. I believe it voted something like 95% no in the Brexit referendum.

Absolutely - there are 3 planned I believe. But won't be operational anytime soon.
And yes we will be wondering WTF when the inevitable hosepipe bans start.

It was something like that. Largely because the people of Gibraltar knew exactly what a total PITA travelling in and out of Spain to work etc would be in the event of Brexit.

It’s not dissimilar to NI in a way. People whose lives are affected by sticking a hard border where there wasn’t one before tend to think it’s a bad idea.

IIRC London is predicted to run out of water within 20-30 years. This year is a bit of an anomaly but I think the general pattern is that the SE is getting less and less rainfall.

Here in the SW we have plenty of the bloody stuff. 🌧️

Notonthestairs · 21/05/2024 17:36

There's good news and bad news - and the Government still want to abolish NI so maybe we can make that black hole £46bn bigger.

NEW
IMF upgrades UK economic forecast and says it's heading for a "soft landing".
BUT it also warns of a £30bn black hole in the public finances and says @Jeremy_Hunt shouldn't have cut National Insurance in the last two fiscal events.

Water firms ask for bill rises of between 24% and 91%

x.com/bbcnews/status/1792912951805919453?s=46&t=Uw4lJNwxFZFnX0Xs3doHYg

My water firm - Thames wants a rise of 59%.
Southern wants 91%!

Notonthestairs · 21/05/2024 17:49

Interesting - south west looks a bit under catered for. Am I reading that correctly?
