Cameron has been busy

https://x.com/Steven_Swinford/status/1792815604681826523

Exclusive:

David Cameron has written to Rishi Sunak warning that universities will face job losses and even closure if he pushes ahead with curbs to graduate visas

Sunak is weighing up measures to ensure only ‘best and brightest’ come to U.K.

Cameron: ‘One of the consequences of any restrictions on graduate visas is that universities will experience further financial difficulties — leading to job losses, closures and a reduction in research’

He highlights the ‘significant economic contribution’ that international students make to the economy

He also warns that it could damage Britain’s ‘soft power’

He joins a coalition of ministers opposed to hardline curbs on graduate visas including Gillian Keegan, the education secretary, Jeremy Hunt, the chancellor and James Cleverly, the home secretary

Ally of Sunak pushes back: ‘Ultimately ministers get lobbied and make a case for their equities but the PM has to take the right position for the country’

If there is one person - and it's not bad considering there are 65,000,000 to chose from - if there is one person I would not criticise dear Rish! for ignoring it's David Cameron. It would actually be a plus point for me.

Which involves bending over (not so much in Rish! case) and industrial quantities of KY jelly.

fabio12 · 21/05/2024 12:19

He is getting about a bit, Cameron, isn't he. Anyone else get the feeling he might want another crack at the whip? I imagine he does feel embarrassment (most of our political class must do when they have to go abroad) but he was very clear Brexit would hurt the UK, unhelpfully as apparently some idiots decided a vote for Leave was anti-Tory without realising it was for the far right Tories instead...

Another news story showing Rishi getting it wrong on women and children https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/czkk41jxpx0o

Teenager sits on floor near lockers

Abusers often family members and other children, police say

Family members and other children carry out more child abuse than grooming gangs, police figures show.

Rish! is in Austria today bonding with their PM over immigration, wonder if it involves any form of jelly 🤔

Family and children often behind abuse - police

over 30 years ago, I got a verbal kicking for suggesting that if we wanted to keep kids safe, we'd kick them out the house and let them wander the streets. But not, the "paedo in every bush" narrative won the day. And with a legal hat on, asking the question "cui bono ?" ends up in pretty much the same place as the current drive to ensure sex education will deliver a steady stream of victims to abusers/

I think the Tories have believed their own hype that everyone with non-white skin is part of a peado-ring gang out to get all of our kids. They've ignored the fact it's a white family man's crime if you look at the prison population. As you say the refusal to educate children about sexual abuse while they are actually children says a lot about who they think should have control in this situation.

They're consistently refusing to curb internet porn accesses despite rising addiction levels leading to erectile dysfunction and rising sexual violence against women. Then, again, refusing to educate kids on the dangers of it and how it changes the physiology of the brain, let alone the legal consequences of strangling someone during a sex act that wasn't so popular 10 years ago.

More and more deciding not to have kids with plenty of reasons why.

SerendipityJane · 21/05/2024 12:42

A fly tipper.

Maybe Marco wants someone to do an offensive caricature of an immigrant dumping rubbish (or abusing children) just in case we don't quite get his drift.

Notonthestairs · 21/05/2024 12:46

I suspect there has already been damage to the HE sector with reduced applications.

So September immigration figures will be lower and they will claim it's been a success.

Never mind that they have no intention of replacing the funding and eventually that will be passed on to UK students or there will be fewer options. I suspect their kids will be in the US (some international students are acceptable).

Bigcoatlady · 21/05/2024 12:47

I think we have had enough kneejerk public response etc. But on women's safety a proper review of sexual asphyxiation and what can be done to address would be a major step forward for women and girls. The approach seems piecemeal atm from a lot of campaign groups highlighting surveys about how many women have experienced this, and how many men have consumed porn showing choking etc.

Off the top of my head I can imagine more needs to be done to clarify consent laws - can it be consented to? Regulation of internet porn so this content cannot be accessed or very strict controls are placed on it. A public info campaign about how dangerous this is and that's there's basically no safe way to do it. These could all help. But right now i don't think anyone knows where to start and it needs a combined approach from health and the criminal justice system.

SerendipityJane · 21/05/2024 12:51

Operation Spanner says not.

We need real world solutions. Not more scamster ideas.

Operation Spanner says not.

Well yeah I'd assume that. But women in surveys are reporting crazy figures like 58% have had it happen to them. They clearly are not all going to the police about it (and indeed nor did the participants in Spanner). the real target of any crim justice intervention should be young men - as in it's really dangerous to reach your hands up and choke your partner because if she complains afterwards and there's any evidence of bruising you have robust evidence of GBH

Bigcoatlady · 21/05/2024 12:54

NB I wd treat the surveys with a pinch of salt but also have 2 YA DDs and their anecdotes are hair-raising.

I also believe the figures. My friend who I spoke about before was very low in the last year of her life and got hooked on Tinder. This was a regular thing by nearly all of the men she saw over that year. I don't doubt it affected her state of mind.

I've also heard teens on the About The Boys podcast talking about it, heard about it on R4 and Woman's Hour. I thought my friend's experience was unusual and scary (she took to being very clear she didn't want to be strangled as they walked in) but it does seem to be something that has taken over across the board. If men can't see this isn't normal and obviously painful and dangerous, something has gone very wrong with our education system in general (and sex ed).

Thanks fabio.
The "grooming gang" narrative makes me so angry. Such bollocks. So much resource going into "proving" something that everyone already knew- the biggest risks to children and women are men they already know.

Alexandra2001 · 21/05/2024 13:57

Has there been any update on the Angela Rayner investigation?

She seems to still be front and centre of Labours campaign and has just announced Labours plans on building new towns.

I'm not entirely sure if this was a wise announcement.

Just seen that Cameron has negotiated for Gibraltar to be in the Schengen zone. Brits trying to enter the British territory will be turned away if they don't meet EU entry requirements.

What a win. Brexit still delivering.

That would be all the loverly sovrintee that we were promised. Control of are boarders.

I thought we had already banned "rough sex" as a defence to killing someone. But it seems not .

It’s taking an interminable amount of time, isn’t it? I suspect nothing can be found and Daly’s urging his pet chief constable to look harder.

Its quite unbelievable.

Justice should be available, equally, to all, i wonder how many residents in the GMP area can order an investigation of this length and detail when they are victims of crime?
