No one believes me when I say I hate the summer.

Just wondering if anyone else feels this way or if I really am a minority.

From now until late October I will feel quite low. Wherever I go I can hear happiness and laughter, even at home I can hear children playing and bbqs taking place. I just don't want to be part of it all.

I feel pressured to enjoy it. My dc want to be out all the time. When I just want to be at home.

There's so much I dislike about the warmer months but can't list it all. I just want the winter to come.

Exactly @Gymnopedie
Given that summer haters get the weather they enjoy for most of the year, I feel that winter and cold weather haters have far, far more justification to moan about cold and wet weather than summer haters, who only get to whinge about the odd week or two of warmer weather.

You would think that we get weeks and weeks of hot weather the way they carry on.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 20/05/2024 18:40

Maybe we should agree summer lovers stay on their threads and summer haters stay on theirs?

My face is too small and sweaty for sunglasses. I’ve tried and they slip off embarrassingly. I’ve tried kids ones too. A bit better but still sweaty face problems cause slippage.

I don’t know how people can look cool and elegant in heat/ sun!

Did you know that you can take many sunglasses to an opticians and they will use their machines to have them fit to your face, as much as possible. I also have a small face/head, and get very hot easily. it makes such a difference when I take my sunglasses to have them fitted after buying them.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 20/05/2024 19:58

Good tip
thank you!
Not sure if my sweaty face would still cause issues!

If your sunglasses fit properly they won't slide down. I'm on holiday somewhere hot at the moment and my glasses are staying where they should be, no matter how hot I am.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 20/05/2024 20:27

But is your face sweaty ? Sorry to be so personal.
Mine drips! Honestly it’s disgusting and I hate it. I’ve even tried deodorant on my face!

I’m a face sweater and my glasses and sunglasses never come off, as long as they’re adjusted at the ear and nose pads they can’t move

It was today Grin and it gets sweaty when I garden on a hot day. My old sunglasses used to slide down my face, but these don't because they fit properly.

You could post in Style and Beauty and ask for recommendations for products to make you face less sweaty.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 20/05/2024 20:53

Ohh I’ll go have a search.
it is embarrassing.
enjoy the sun!

im enjoying the cloud cover here rn.

think I have hyperhidrosis too. The slightest humidity makes my hair start to frizz and within minutes my scalp and face are wet through. Nothing seems to help even the expensive lotions and sprays. I was referred to an endocrinologist to see if there was any underlying hormonal cause for hyperhydrosis (head, face, chest). They ruled thyroid, adrenal and other issues out and diagnosed essential hyperhydrosis. There are tablets to help but I found the side effects awful. I’m waiting for a dermatology referral (waiting and waiting ) to see if they would consider Botox. I think it’s only done in a few cases and they have to get funding for it, so no idea if I’ll get it. The discomfort and embarrassment is awful. I look like I’ve just got out the shower when all I’ve done is walked slowly down the street or done a bit of hot weather. In winter it calms down but as soon as the temp gets above 20, I feel like a mobile water fountain.

Ginmonkeyagain · 20/05/2024 21:13

It's not just about heat or liking the outdoors, people are hardwired to welcome spring/summer because before our comfortable modern lifestyles winter meant life endangering weather, dark and the real threat of starvation.

Preferring winter is definitely a modern, first world privilege.

I personally can find something to enjoy in every season, which is why I love living in a country with defined seasons. But I am definitely happier now the sun has arrived - the light, the warmth , the dry weather is glorious after such a long slog through a wet winter.

It is awful isn’t it.

I had a search for treatment and saw the tablets. Side effect dry mouth. That doesn’t seem like a good pay off.

I saw someone with a personal fan around her neck! Might try that.

I'm not saying that they don't exist but it's more effort to find them. I could walk into any supermarket in winter and quickly pick up a pair of jeans and jumper, in summer it's vest tops and shorts.

I don't wear vest tops or shorts (and supermarkets don't sell clothes here). The shops are full of dresses all through the warmer months. I do most of my clothes shopping online btw, it couldn't be more simple.

As for quickly walking into a supermarket to pick up a pair of jeans - I've been looking for the perfect jeans for decades, and they really aren't that easy to find. 😅

Do you ever get people saying "But you can't have hay fever, it's the wrong time of year!", because they just don't understand the concept of perennial rhinitis and that it isn't just grass pollen that sets you off?

All the time 😂 Pollen is actually my main trigger, but I suspect my cats are the main culprits for the rest of the year. Now that I have only one I'm not so bad.

NoOneFellOffTheirChair · 20/05/2024 23:10

pinkfluffypencilcase. It’s so miserable. The tablets gave me a really dry mouth and eyes and made it hard to pass urine. I couldn’t carry on with them. I have a neck fan and it helps as long as it’s not really hot. I was on a train without aircon, and honestly couldn’t feel much difference. The best ones I’ve found are the one with the round fans that look like headphones. The neater, less conspicuous looking ones weren’t nearly powerful enough.

Thanks for the info. Hers did look like headphones! I will have a look into them.

The tablets sound horrific!

I don't enjoy the high heat of summer but it rarely lasts very long in this country, and at least we save money on the heating! I have psoriatic arthritis which gets quite a lot more painful in the hot weather and my affected joints become quite swollen so that can be a struggle to manage. It's lovely to be able to enjoy the fresh air though, and it's easier to entertain the kids. The key is to hit beaches and parks early in the morning before the sun gets too high, everything is quieter then too. Then the kids can have lunch and chill for a bit before going out in the afternoon for a splash in the paddling pool or whatever you like to do. Forest walks are good on really sunny days because they're shaded.

FixItUpChappie · 21/05/2024 00:51

I hated summer for years and it was because I'm overweight tbh. I would try to wear inappropriate clothes to hide my figure. It changed when in my 40's, having given up on caring about my appearance, I rediscovered shorts and tank tops and large hats that kept the sun off my face. With appropriate clothing I can bike, hike, paddleboard, enjoy the beach etc. I can actually enjoy the heat and my children and be more active which is better for my health too.

Not saying that is your situation of course OP, just adding my own evolution with hot weather.

MonkeyTennis34 · 21/05/2024 08:54

Fellow mole here too!

Love the Autumn and Winter months.
Would prefer much colder winters than we've been having in the UK over the past few years.

Love the dark evenings, the sense of hankering down and feeling cosy.

Sunlight can bring on a migraine.

God I'm a joy 😂

paprikaforever · 22/05/2024 14:41

I bet all the summer haters are overjoyed at the current weather?! 😆

siblingrevelryagain · 22/05/2024 14:47

I hate it

I'm a single Mom and am generally happy and appreciative of my life, but bank holidays and nice weather make me feel I'm missing out too (hearing couples/families having BBQ's etc).

I hate flies and wasps in the house

I hate the need for suncream (the expense and the application)

I hate the heat, especially trying to sleep (my kids are teens now but especially when they were little, trying to get them to sleep when it was still light and too hot was a nightmare)

I freakin' hate the sound of birdsong, especially at 4.30am

I like to bake (bread and cakes) and sometimes it's too hot to have the oven on.

Have to a shave legs and pits

Driving in sun affects my vision terribly, and can give me migraines

In contrast to all this, I love pretty much everything about Autumn & winter; the food, the clothing, the candles, the lack of insects....

JamSandle · 22/05/2024 20:21

I dont understand how anyone can hate UK Summer when we only get about 2 weeks of it!

ALongHardWinter · 23/05/2024 19:27

I believe you! I'm much the same. The main thing I dislike is the heat. I know there are going to be people saying we don't get much/any hot weather in summer in the UK,but I'm talking about anything over 22 degrees, which isn't that uncommon. I was very overweight up until 5 years ago and thought that that was why the heat affected me so badly, but having lost a large amount of weight (I'm now only moderately overweight!) I've not noticed any real difference to my tolerance of heat. I'm very fair skinned so I have to keep out of the sun as much as possible. Not that I'd sit in the sun even if I wasn't fair skinned as bright sunlight really hurts my eyes and gives me a headache.
Another reason I dislike summer is because practically everyone else says they love it. I do actually doubt this, but it just annoys me that no one will admit to it,they feel like they have to say they love it, admitting you don't makes you look like a killjoy.
Summer also seems to bring out the worst in peoples' behaviour. Endless noise in back gardens from dawn until dark and people in cars blaring 'music' at full volume. Going anywhere on public transport is awful, with people stinkiing of BO and last night's alcohol. I refuse to travel on the underground in the summer months unless it's absolutely unavoidable because it's always about 5 - 6 degrees hotter than above ground.
I do get people giving me funny looks when I say I don't really enjoy summer.

Pettyman · 23/05/2024 20:10

Sunny here this evening and the noise in one of the gardens is taking the piss. Teenagers whacking a ball off every surface whilst screaming and swearing. Hope it rains tomorrow
