No one believes me when I say I hate the summer.

Just wondering if anyone else feels this way or if I really am a minority.

From now until late October I will feel quite low. Wherever I go I can hear happiness and laughter, even at home I can hear children playing and bbqs taking place. I just don't want to be part of it all.

I feel pressured to enjoy it. My dc want to be out all the time. When I just want to be at home.

There's so much I dislike about the warmer months but can't list it all. I just want the winter to come.

The weight comments just feel spiteful and judgey.

I loathe summer too, OP, I’m a Celt to my core and am happiest under a steely grey sky. I feel quite sketchy in the summer, SAD descends for me around this time of year always.

oh good grief

my beloved sister who is very overweight struggles in summer because of sweating, chafing and general discomfort

your skin must be paper thin

OldTinHat · 19/05/2024 16:20

I've hated the summer months since I was a toddler right through to now in my 50s. I dislike the pressure it brings to be sociable, to go out, to mingle, to do stuff.

Roll on 21st June and the shortening of days again!

They do don’t they.

im brown and still struggle. Friends don’t get it. I get far too hot and sweaty. And exhausted. My skin reacts badly. It’s like I have no thermoregulation.

Pootlepins · 19/05/2024 16:23

Same here - love Spring but as soon as the evenings start staying light and it warms up, I start the countdown to September.

Sunnytwobridges · 19/05/2024 16:27

greenbeansrock · 19/05/2024 16:00

and you come alive in the winter months?

are you overweight?

Rude. We are not all the same have to like the same things.

OP I’m the same. I’ve hated summer since I was a teen - regardless of my weight (which fluctuates) The heat actually makes me feel ill. I’m hot natured and it’s gotten worse since once I turned 40. Also bugs are attracted to me and I get large itchy lumps from them biting me.

I start dreading the summer coming in March as I know I will be uncomfortable for the next few months. My DD who is skinny as a twig hates the summer as well so weight doesn’t have anything to do with it.

ItsADiamond · 19/05/2024 16:30

I haven't read all the reply's yet but just wanted to clarify that I don't dislike the sound of children's happiness, I realise that my post sounded like I did. It's just it makes me feel like I should be laughing and happy when I really can't be.

I can’t relate to this at all. I’ve been outside all day since about 8am when I took the dog for a walk in the sunshine. Everyone said morning and seemed so much more friendly. I was wearing shorts, a yellow vest top, that alone made me feel better and more cheerful. I’ve been wearing wellies, a Barbour jacket and scarves on dog walks since last October. I took my 8 year old child with me and we stopped for coffee and cake.

Since then I’ve been basking in the sun, children been in the paddling pool, we’ve currently got burgers on the BBQ, bifolds open, music on, doing jobs in the garden, then a bit of sunbathing. I was only thinking this morning, if you live in the UK it’s like you live two different lives. A winter life and a summer life. My lifestyle is completely different, it’s like you get 4 extra hours in the summer each day. I’ve been waiting a long time for this sun and I’m absolutely loving it. I reckon I’ve said ‘What a beautiful day’ about 5 times today.

pambeesleyhalpert · 19/05/2024 16:34

I hate it. So so much

Portakalkedi · 19/05/2024 16:36

Yes I hate it too OP, the only redeeming feature is lower energy bills, but I'd gladly take winter bills instead.

AtomHeartMotherOfGod · 19/05/2024 16:37

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 19/05/2024 16:05

wtf does her weight have to do with it?

Quite a lot - I'm overweight and struggle at this time; feel super ugly, always hot, hate seeing my horrible fleshy self. Lots of people chucking on whatever they want, without a second thought. If can make you antisocial, to feel left out in that way.

WhatNoRaisins · 19/05/2024 16:40

I like the novelty of it right now but there always comes a point where I get too hot and fed up of summer. I seem to tolerate the worst of winter much longer before getting fed up.

Personally I'd be happy for the temperature to never get above 25C.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 19/05/2024 16:45

Think my optimum is 22’C

Humidity is the worst though. I keep checking weather forecasts for thunder storms!

WinkyTinky · 19/05/2024 16:45

I find it really headache-y. The light makes my eyes water, I have to point my head downwards to avoid the brightness, and then I just get a headache. Also I know what you mean about the pressure to be out and about in nothing but a skimpy dress, and the sounds of kids playing, people out in their gardens, and worst of all colleagues who bang on endlessly about the beer garden. I quite like to be at the beach but it's rammed in the summer and no fun at all. As for actually feeling hot, I don't enjoy that at all, and I'm a skinny rake. I just much prefer the winter when you can dress yourself up in layers to be cosy, and nobody looks at you. Come on, dark nights!

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 19/05/2024 16:46

@AtomHeartMotherOfGod

Read her update. Again, nothing said about weight.

atlaz · 19/05/2024 16:50

Personally I'd be happy for the temperature to never get above 25C.

That's pretty much all year then, bar about 20 days if that.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 19/05/2024 16:50

You were almost certainly a Polar Bear in a former live.

(I expect that you eat a lot of Foxes Glacier mints)

greenbeansrock · 19/05/2024 16:01

but not your children presumably

Ooo 😂

Negangirlxx · 19/05/2024 17:01

I’m fat, pale as hell, and hate being too hot, but I still LOVE the summer.

Sun automatically makes my day better. I hate rain, and I hate being cold. It’s hard to be miserable when it’s sunny, and the skies are blue. I love not having to lug umbrellas, jumpers, and coats around with me.

You can’t be mad at people for wanting to take advantage of, and enjoy the good weather, especially since we don’t get a lot of it over here.

OriginalUsername2 · 19/05/2024 17:09

I feel the same OP. Exactly the same when I had young kids too. Lots of sitting in the shade and coping.

I would love to enjoy summer but it makes me feel weak, sick and yeah, that underlying anxiety of expectation is very relatable.

ETA: am not at all overweight and still feel like this

Longma · 19/05/2024 17:12

But most of our uk summers don't actually involve warm, let alone hot, dry weather consistently. We had last weekend and this weekend, here. In between it's been colder, grey, overcast and often wet.

Most of last summer wasn't warm. I spent way more of last summer indoors than out.

strawberryjeans · 19/05/2024 17:14

greenbeansrock · 19/05/2024 16:00

and you come alive in the winter months?

are you overweight?

Entirely unnecessary, have you not got anything better to do?

greenbeansrock · 19/05/2024 17:17

strawberryjeans · 19/05/2024 17:14

Entirely unnecessary, have you not got anything better to do?

🙄

So being overweight doesn’t mean that perhaps the heat impacts you more than would otherwise be the case

Just just if someone said that they hated the winter months, it may be relevant that they are underweight

Being overweight is such a touchy subject on mumsnet; it’s disturbing

BrieAndChilli · 19/05/2024 17:18

I’m like the hairiest person in the world so summer means having to spend ages every day defusing myself if I want to wear nice summer stuff. In the winter I can leave it under tights/jumpers/trousers etc.
the sun means you ‘have to be outside enjoying it’ when all it means is everywhere is busy and you feel guilty if you stay home to do housework or just chill

LindorDoubleChoc · 19/05/2024 17:22

You've found your tribe here OP. Mumsnet is rammed with posters who hate the summer and who start complaining the minute the sun comes out. I'm surprised you haven't noticed the endless threads about it.
