No one believes me when I say I hate the summer.

Just wondering if anyone else feels this way or if I really am a minority.

From now until late October I will feel quite low. Wherever I go I can hear happiness and laughter, even at home I can hear children playing and bbqs taking place. I just don't want to be part of it all.

I feel pressured to enjoy it. My dc want to be out all the time. When I just want to be at home.

There's so much I dislike about the warmer months but can't list it all. I just want the winter to come.

TonTonMacoute · 19/05/2024 18:49

Really OP? Mumsnet seems to be full of miserable women who hate summer. I love it, I feel sorry for them. God knows we get so few days a year when it's lovely and hot and sunny, and these poor people have to go around moaning to everyone how awful it is.

WhatNoRaisins · 19/05/2024 18:51

I was surprised at how normal it is on MN to not like summer. In real life I feel unusual and I don't even hate it completely like a lot on here do.

Stoptakingthep · 19/05/2024 18:55

There are numerous posts about this running at the moment.

The same as all the 'nobody believes' at Christmas posts.

People are different.

What needs to happen is people need to stop thinking there's something rare, individual or uncommon about very common things.

You could've just Googled your question and seen thousands of Google pages say no, you're not alone or put it into MN even and there'll be dozens if not, hundreds of similar posts.

The Internet is a wonderful tool. Just use it. Instead of wasting your and everyone else's time.

Since then I’ve been basking in the sun, children been in the paddling pool, we’ve currently got burgers on the BBQ, bifolds open, music on

And did anyone mention how noise levels go up in packed-together gardens? 😁

And the smoke and stench! 😆

earther · 19/05/2024 19:27

I love all the weather MN hates.

greenbeansrock · 19/05/2024 19:41

do all the haters never holiday abroad in the summer to Spain, Italy, France… indeed most of Europe and further afield during the summer?

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 19/05/2024 19:47

Abriad us set up differently for the heat and sun.
Stone floors, not carpet etc
pace is different.
I usually go coastal so cooler.

But I would avoid v hot.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 19/05/2024 19:48

made the mistake of being in Thailand over Easter once. Unbearable! Unless on the beach or in air con.

MummyJ36 · 19/05/2024 19:49

I openly don’t like the summer. Grew up in the north and have lived down south for the last 18 years. Never ever got used to the intensity of summer down here, no breeze, no fresh air, no respite! Now that I have DC’s I’ve got to really haul myself out with them to enjoy the sun because I know how much they love it. But I truly feel wrecked after a day out in the summer!

Misthios · 19/05/2024 19:54

I am the opposite and really struggle with the lack of light over the winter months. Every year though there are people like the OP who barge into threads bemoaning it being dark by 4pm saying we just need to pull ourselves together and snuggle on the sofa all cosy under a blankie with hot choccie. So in the interests of balance....

Oh OP! What tosh and nonsense! It's the best time of the year, what are you doing wishing your life away and yearning for winter! Summer is amazing, it's the bestest time of year and I just love it! All you need to do is EMBRACE the changing seasons! Treat yourself to a nice new floaty dress and sit in the garden with an Aperol spritz! It's AMAZING! I don't know what you're moaning about <tinkly laugh>

TeenLifeMum · 19/05/2024 19:58

I believe you. I’m like a lizard though - I need sun to feel energised. Once dc have left home, I’m planning a February holiday in the Caribbean every year just to get me through the winter. But I can still understand someone may differ. We all love different things. My favourite season is autumn with the changing leaves.

Yawn.

Every summer there are multiple threads on MN from posters like you saying how much they hate summer.

I get that hot weather makes some people feel uncomfortable, some health conditions are made worse in hot weather, hay-fever sufferers feel awful and fair skinned people burn but, let's face it - you summer haters get far more of the weather you like than people who enjoy summer.

And I just don't understand people who say they hate summer clothes. Just wear more lightweight versions of what you normally wear. Loose cotton or linen clothes are much cooler than tight or skimpy clothes. It isn't rocket science.

And those complaining about it being too bright - why aren't you wearing sunglasses and a hat?

do all the haters never holiday abroad in the summer to Spain, Italy, France… indeed most of Europe and further afield during the summer?

I regularly go to places on holiday. I:

Don't have to work
Can nap in the hot part of the day
Have brilliant things to do
Can please myself with food
Don't have to cook in a hot kitchen
Make sure I have a/c in the bedroom because I can't stand sleeping in the heat

Of course holidays are different. If I was riding camels to see dinosaur bones in the UK in August, I'd be happy then too. I never ever choose two weeks baking on a beach though. That's hell.

buffyslayer · 19/05/2024 20:12

I used to hate it, I'm a redhead who comes out in hives from head to toe from heat and exercise. Then I got my hives sorted after 27 years living with them and it's been amazing

Today I've been able to do a spin class and sit out in the garden (under a tree with factor 50 of course!)
Now I'm not itching and full of thousands of hives, summer actually seems nice

All of this. I am quite capable of enjoying a holiday in 35 degrees if I have a pool, air con in the room, no work, loads of places to visit and enjoy and ot doesn't matter when anyone goes to sleep. I also loathe my normal life in anything over 25 degrees because I have none of those other things.

DrCoconut · 19/05/2024 20:21

@Moveoverdarlin same here. Been at the park with the kids for ice cream and scooter rides this afternoon. My mood and energy have been so much better the last couple of days and my food cravings have gone. It's been over a year since the last really decent weather and I am desperately ready. The kids are better too, more cheerful and sleeping better, they don't thrive cooped up in the house over the very long autumn, winter, spring bad weather. I know other people feel differently and in a way I envy them as they get roughly 10/12 months to enjoy their preferred weather.

Hedjwitch · 19/05/2024 20:36

After what has been almost 6 months of grey skies and relentless rain here in Scotland,I am enjoying every damn second of this long awaited sunshine.
It will be gone before we know it and people wil be wittering on about crisp autumn days and frosty sparkly winter nights...which in reality will just be more grey skies and rain.

CurbsideProphet · 19/05/2024 20:42

If I lived in a hotel with air con, a pool, someone to cook / housework, and no job, I would be fine with warm weather. As I don't, I find it sweaty, clammy, hayfevery etc. I don't say anything about it as people like my MIL moan and tell me I'll make the nice weather go away, then blame me if a cloud appears ...

everythinglooksbetterpaintedblack · 19/05/2024 20:47

Hot summers and real life don't mix well.
Hot summers and a holiday destination are lovely

Youcantellalotofthingsabouttheflowers · 19/05/2024 20:50

I hate it, in any country. Just the way I am wired. I don’t begrudge anyone who loves it though. Us Winter people get a much better deal in fairness.

greenbeansrock · 19/05/2024 20:51

You’d think from this thread that the UK had relentless blistering hot summers and that we were reknowned throughout the world for our hot hot summers 😆

Crunchingleaf · 19/05/2024 20:53

I definitely feel like a lift in my mood and energy on sunny days. Love longer evenings where I can get out for a walk after the toddlers are asleep in bed to recharge myself.
I absolutely adore the beach even if you just go in to your ankles and run around with the kids. It’s so much fun.
it was nice to eat dinner outside today and not have to sweep up after the toddlers because the birds will eat the dropped food.
Smallest fella had his nap today 12-2 which suited perfectly to keep him out of the sun at that time. My kids hate being inside. Only rain will keep them indoors so I am glad of a bit of heat instead of being frozen following two toddlers around outside.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 19/05/2024 20:53

But we are set up for winters greenbeans! And the pace isn’t conducive to staying cool.
