No one believes me when I say I hate the summer.

Just wondering if anyone else feels this way or if I really am a minority.

From now until late October I will feel quite low. Wherever I go I can hear happiness and laughter, even at home I can hear children playing and bbqs taking place. I just don't want to be part of it all.

I feel pressured to enjoy it. My dc want to be out all the time. When I just want to be at home.

There's so much I dislike about the warmer months but can't list it all. I just want the winter to come.

Totally agree!! I never fail to understand why people don't get this. A floaty skirt and top are far more cool to wear in heat than shorts and a skimpy tight top. I live in cotton and linen skirts and tops in summer.

I feel more comfortable in jeans and jumpers nothing to do with being hot just like to cover up

I live in NZ and would feel extemely uncomfortable in jeans and jumpers in summer. In fact I'm sure I would faint! My jeans get no wear at all in the warmer months.

However, I am well covered in a long floaty skirt and a top with sleeves - and cool.

Me too, I hate hot weather, light nights, it being too hot to sleep & having to have the fan on. I can't wait for the summer solstice when the nights start getting dark earlier, the cold weather when the heating is on, I can wear my thermals, lots of layers & snuggle down under the duvet. I was a winter baby & I'm convinced that it has something to do with my feeling more comfortable at that time of the year. I was at my happiest when we were snowed in during winter 2010, days spent hunkered down in the house, the heating on full, hot soup, hot drinks & hot food, going to bed early, watching television & reading.

The OP doesn't sound like someone who struggles with heat for physiological reasons; she sounds like someone who struggles with social stuff and wants to lean into this difficulty as a personality trait or lifestyle. Fortunately, MN is full of "introverts" wafting vaguely about how special and misunderstood they are, so she's in good company.

You can cover up in loose cotton/linen trousers and a long sleeved cotton shirt. If you are wearing jeans and jumpers in hot weather that's on you and don't complain about feeling hot.

I don't understand why people aren't more practical about wearing appropriate clothes for the weather 🤷‍♀️

RampantIvy · 20/05/2024 05:24

It isn't as if we have a lot of hot weather in the UK.

I would understand it if summer was 6 months of heat, but it isn't. 2022 was exceptional, but we are lucky if we get a few days in a row of decent weather.

I can only assume that those who like to have the heating on full blast in cold weather have plenty of money and don't care about the environment. And why do you need the heating on if you dislike heat? The irony.

I don’t complain about being hot! I am insecure about my body so prefer winter. Obviously I don’t wear jumpers in summer!

I totally get being insecure about the way you look but, believe me, you won't look any fatter (or thinner) in summer clothes than in winter clothes.

WhatNoRaisins · 20/05/2024 09:11

I think it's easier to find nicer winter clothes, there's no shortage of jeans and jumpers in the shops. Finding equivalent summer clothes is harder as most shops just default to the skimpy look.

I have a wardrobe full of lovely summer clothes which say you are wrong - and I can assure you none of them are skimpy, and while I live in NZ some of them were purchased from the UK.

WhatNoRaisins · 20/05/2024 09:53

I'm not saying that they don't exist but it's more effort to find them. I could walk into any supermarket in winter and quickly pick up a pair of jeans and jumper, in summer it's vest tops and shorts.

TheDumpling · 20/05/2024 10:02

I believe you 100%! I bloody well HATE summer/sun/heat, always have done since I was a baby.

It blinds you, you're walking around forever with your hands hovering over your eyes so you can see where you're going, you sweat so much your clothes and hair stick to you like glue, you can't sleep, lack energy and ooomph, you get stinking headaches, mood swings, if you're female it can make periods/menopause worse, you get burned like a sausage, and all kinds of other stuff!

I absolutely will NOT go on holiday during summers or anywhere where it will be hot.

When I was at school I always couldn't stand every summer when we were dragged outside for boring rounders etc. I couldn't breathe, was gasping for air and constantly being shouted at by teachers and pupils for not doing it properly and making loads of mistakes.

I've been branded as selfish and inconsiderate! I've got Rheumatoid and Osteoarthritis and a permanently damaged bad back and the heat makes the never-ending excruciating pain worse but I've been told to ''just deal with it for a few weeks''

I LOVE winters! Cool rain, icy snow, beautiful winds, amazing storms, mist and fog, coldness! Hugging hot water bottles and snuggled in with fat duvets!

I refuse to be pressured to liking summer because others do, I just tell them we all have our own individual bodies and brains and we all react differently to it and if they don't like the fact that I hate summer, then tough, they can go and do one!

I've very much with you on this!

Sunglasses.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 20/05/2024 11:34

My face is too small and sweaty for sunglasses. I’ve tried and they slip off embarrassingly. I’ve tried kids ones too. A bit better but still sweaty face problems cause slippage.

I don’t know how people can look cool and elegant in heat/ sun!

wtf does her weight have to do with it?

I get it. Hot weather is much less fun when you're overweight.

spicysamosahotcupoftea · 20/05/2024 11:56

@PoppingTomorrow totally agree with you.

But I've see nothing in the OP's posts to suggest this is the reason she doesn't like summer.

No I really don't.

OH MY GOD!! SAME!!

I've never met anyone else who hates the summer!

It's honestly like having reverse SAD for me - I wake up, see it's sunny and feel miserable.

I try not to talk about it because it's uncomfortable hating something that literally everyone else loves! I always laugh it off as I'm the 'Summer Grinch' etc.

I also try not to bring it up because then people ask me what I don't like about it and my list is EXTENSIVE 😂

Once I start on about squinting and sandals and flowy fabrics and barbecues and pub gardens and men not wearing shirts and hot seats and sweaty nights and shit summer dresses and hay fever and fecking ants and sun cream and sunburn and......well, I could go on (and on, and on) but it just never goes down well 😆

I will be counting down the days to autumnal breezes, cardigans and boots. We will get through this, guys!

Same. Love Autumn/Winter. Who wants to see shorts, flip flops, vest tops and tattoos. Who wants kids running outside screaming. Who wants flies. Not for me

blacksax · 20/05/2024 13:47

nothingsforgotten · 19/05/2024 23:16

I have suffered from everything you mention at some stage, apart from the headache, the rash from grass, and the menopausal hot flushes. I get hay fever all year around, in fact it is often worse in the cooler months. I can't go outside even in winter without sunglasses, and I'm not thin.

And I bloody love summer, and I'm in NZ where we get longer, hotter summers than in the UK.

Edited

Do you ever get people saying "But you can't have hay fever, it's the wrong time of year!", because they just don't understand the concept of perennial rhinitis and that it isn't just grass pollen that sets you off?

DrCoconut · 20/05/2024 13:57

I find winter clothes awful. They add pounds in weight and feel heavy and suffocating. I look years older and frumpier in them. I hate the faff of dressing everyone in multiple layers and socks. Summer clothes are light and comfy and convenient. They needn't be any skimpier than winter clothes, just lighter and airy.

I get it. I also have a small face. I also wear glasses because I am shortsighted, so I get prescription sunglasses as well. The difference is that mine are professionally fitted and adjusted accordingly.

Not wearing sunglasses in bright weather increases your risk of eye cancers and cataracts BTW.

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 20/05/2024 14:21

I don’t need glasses so unfortunately I havent got that option.
Luckily I avoid the sun. Though when driving it’s difficult.

That’s a worry re cataracts etc!

Gymnopedie · 20/05/2024 17:23

What I find annoying about the comments on these threads is that it’s seen to be acceptable to be unhappy in the winter when it’s grey and cold but us who are the opposite are pretty much ridiculed.

Not at all. Last autumn there was a thread for people who love darker nights, cold days, blankies and hot choc, and it was even in the thread title - people who don't like the winter keep out of the thread. And then repeated in the OP, if you don't like winter keep your opinions to yourself.

It was made very clear that those of us who love summer and hate winter were not seen as acceptable.
