No one believes me when I say I hate the summer.

Just wondering if anyone else feels this way or if I really am a minority.

From now until late October I will feel quite low. Wherever I go I can hear happiness and laughter, even at home I can hear children playing and bbqs taking place. I just don't want to be part of it all.

I feel pressured to enjoy it. My dc want to be out all the time. When I just want to be at home.

There's so much I dislike about the warmer months but can't list it all. I just want the winter to come.

You've found your tribe here OP. Mumsnet is rammed with posters who hate the summer and who start complaining the minute the sun comes out. I'm surprised you haven't noticed the endless threads about it.

to be fair - it’s the same with pretty much anything and everything. Summer, winter, holidays, Christmas….

greenbeansrock · 19/05/2024 17:17

🙄

So being overweight doesn’t mean that perhaps the heat impacts you more than would otherwise be the case

Just just if someone said that they hated the winter months, it may be relevant that they are underweight

Being overweight is such a touchy subject on mumsnet; it’s disturbing

Why was it your first question though and why do you care?

I’m not touchy about it, I am touchy about others belittling people or derailing a thread for the sake of making a jibe.

TitanicWasAGreatMovie · 19/05/2024 17:28

As Pinkfluffy said, I think I am also part Mole!

I don't like summer because I am allergic to everything in the air so lots of sneezing and red eyes from March to October, plus apparently allergic sun (sun block gives me a heat rash) I swell up with water retention, I am red faced and cornbeef legged, sweaty, grumpy. I don't like doing anything outside when it's too hot for all the above reasons. So, I stop running or even walking anywhere for a month.

I really do appreciate that most people (everyone in my family anyway) love it, so I try very hard not to complain irl!

Cloclo93 · 19/05/2024 17:34

Yeah the dark evenings can be cosy I quite like wearing my big duvet coat in the cold winter days. Plus I'd pick a frosty foggy cool day over a hot sunny day

ColourMeBlue · 19/05/2024 17:37

I hate the summer too.I hate the heat, getting sweaty, being too warm to sleep at night.I much prefer Autumn and Winter. Its too warm to do any cleaning,so I'm staying up tonight when it's cooler.I prefer cold days and hot meals😂

Abracadabra12345 · 19/05/2024 17:37

Since then I’ve been basking in the sun, children been in the paddling pool, we’ve currently got burgers on the BBQ, bifolds open, music on

And did anyone mention how noise levels go up in packed-together gardens? 😁

flapjackfairy · 19/05/2024 17:43

i am another summer hater. I am counting down to the start of September already. I embrace it as best I can but I hate the light mornings ( and yes I have blackout blinds and curtains but somehow my body still knows it's light) and get more and more tired. I am fine at present but any warmer and I struggle to cope and worst of all is increased neighbour noise and boy racers with loud exhausts who all spend the weekend making a racket.
I actually like rainy days and cold weather and the rare snow days we get are the v best of all.

MrsLeonFarrell · 19/05/2024 17:43

For me it's the heat and humidity. Anything over 25 is too hot. I like the garden and the birds and not needing to put the heating on, and the beach, and bbqs and pretty much most of summer but over 25 I retreat indoors and try to stay cool.

And for those who are weight focused I'm not fat I just don't do heat or humidity well.

NoOneFellOffTheirChair · 19/05/2024 17:43

I’ve always loathed summer. The pressure to be out doing fun, summery things. I have hyperhidrosis and my head down to my chest feels and looks like a tap has been turned on. It’s uncomfortable and miserable.

Edenmum2 · 19/05/2024 17:45

I hate it but just because I hate feeling hot. The sound of people having fun doesn't bother me but I much prefer colder months

Kneenightmare · 19/05/2024 17:48

I’ve always hated summer too from being a skinny child who had nosebleeds, allergies and heat rash to being an overweight adult. I hate walking outside and getting hot and sweaty and having to be coated in sticky Sun cream.

I play rain sounds when I got to sleep to help me feel cooler. I love the other seasons though.

LyndaSnellsSniff · 19/05/2024 17:50

I hate heat too. It makes me feel suffocated, tired and grubby. Being too hot to sleep is a dreadful feeling. However, I do love sunshine. The worse possible combo is hot, muggy overcast days.

I feel so much more comfortable in autumn and winter. I feel like I can breathe again.

Soubriquet · 19/05/2024 17:50

I don’t like the heat. I’m ok with the sun just not the heat

YouveGotAFastCar · 19/05/2024 17:54

ItsADiamond · 19/05/2024 16:30

I haven't read all the reply's yet but just wanted to clarify that I don't dislike the sound of children's happiness, I realise that my post sounded like I did. It's just it makes me feel like I should be laughing and happy when I really can't be.

Are you okay? Is it literally only in the summer?

I can’t relate to this at all, I love the summer, but I really struggle in the winter - I was not built for cold, the darker skies and lack of colour and less daylight really get to me - so I can imagine that it’s horrible the other way round.

Do you think there’s any way to make it easier for you?

it wasn’t my first question

Overtheatlantic · 19/05/2024 17:58

I don’t relate to hating an entire season especially when the UK doesn’t really have a proper summer. Can you move to Lerwick?

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/05/2024 18:00

greenbeansrock · 19/05/2024 17:55

Lots and lots of people (including me) thought your question sounded snippy and judgmental. Rather than fight that, and every poster mentioning it, maybe just accept that it was poorly phrased. You did sound that way, even if you didn't mean it that way.

And then maybe everyone can stop derailing.

Dottiespotty · 19/05/2024 18:00

I’m much happier in the winter . There something about this weather that makes you feel a thoigh you should be out doing things . When actually I’m an antisocial introvert who is happier on my own inside doing bits and bobs.

had the Op expressed offence, i would have responded differently

im not bothered about what other posters think on a thread that isn’t theirs!

Hiker50 · 19/05/2024 18:03

I like it so long as it stays below 26. Once it goes over that I'm a boiling menopausal mess.

I live very rurally. We could shout from the rooftops and only the cows and sheep would complain. But yes, I can see why people get fed up with that.

TellySavalashairbrush · 19/05/2024 18:33

Yep. I hate summer too. I burn not tan, hate summer clothes and neighbours are at their worst noise wise out in their gardens . I’m also not keen on summer food. Roll on autumn I say.

blacksax · 19/05/2024 18:46

I've never much liked hot, sunny weather - and that includes my teenage years and young adulthood when I was as thin as a rake, so fuck all to do with being fat, as some posters insinuate.

The bright light hurts my eyes and I have to wear sunglasses the entire time.

I don't like the sunshine beating down on my head, even when I have a hat on. It gives me a headache and the hat makes my forehead sweat.

I get prickly heat.

I'm allergic to most suntan lotion.

I dislike the sensation of suntan lotion on my skin, especially if some kid runs past on the beach and kicks sand on you.

I don't like sunbathing.

I'm fair-haired with pale freckly skin and burn easily.

I have had a second-degree burn from getting sunburnt on a small patch of skin I missed with the lotion. In May. In the UK.

I get hay fever.

I get a rash from sitting on the grass.

I have had sunstroke and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

These days I have to contend with menopausal hot flushes as well.

I'm sure I'm not alone in not liking summer all that much. I yearn for autumn.
