No one believes me when I say I hate the summer.

Just wondering if anyone else feels this way or if I really am a minority.

From now until late October I will feel quite low. Wherever I go I can hear happiness and laughter, even at home I can hear children playing and bbqs taking place. I just don't want to be part of it all.

I feel pressured to enjoy it. My dc want to be out all the time. When I just want to be at home.

There's so much I dislike about the warmer months but can't list it all. I just want the winter to come.

I hate it, in any country. Just the way I am wired. I don’t begrudge anyone who loves it though. Us Winter people get a much better deal in fairness.

People who love both seasons get the best deal!

I love the sun, warmth, long evenings, bbqs and all the outside time in the summer
I loved the cosy nights, build up to christmas, my lovely winter boots and coat and long dog walks with my thermos of coffee

Prestonic89 · 19/05/2024 21:01

I hate the summer too. It’s not necessarily the heat but it can be a real trigger for me feeling low and anxious. It’s the expectation that everyone should be happy and out socialising and I really struggle with what to wear as I would never wear shorts or a skirt or a vest top.

Tyum · 19/05/2024 21:06

I hated summer living in the south in England, luckily where I live now it rarely gets about 18 and when it does there’s still a decent breeze. It used to make me miserable though, always had migraines in the heat.

Catlover1705 · 19/05/2024 21:07

I can understand this if you're introverted, a homebody and like peace and quiet. My neighbours have BBQs every weekend in good weather so the peace is shattered. I do enjoy lovely weather but hate the heat and suffer with hay fever.

Arraminta · 19/05/2024 21:13

I hear you, if I had my way we would live in a perpetual October. I don't think I have ever liked hot, sunny weather because I find it somehow oppressive? I am not overweight and tan easily but I hate feeling hot and sweaty, and I think I have hyperhidrosis too. The slightest humidity makes my hair start to frizz and within minutes my scalp and face are wet through. Nothing seems to help even the expensive lotions and sprays. I hate flies in the house and am always getting bitten by random insects.

Skimpy clothes aren't very cooling. Loose cotton or linen trousers and loose cotton or linen tops with sleeves are good options.

Tight clothes are really uncomfortable in hot weather.

RampantIvy · 19/05/2024 20:00

Yawn.

Every summer there are multiple threads on MN from posters like you saying how much they hate summer.

I get that hot weather makes some people feel uncomfortable, some health conditions are made worse in hot weather, hay-fever sufferers feel awful and fair skinned people burn but, let's face it - you summer haters get far more of the weather you like than people who enjoy summer.

And I just don't understand people who say they hate summer clothes. Just wear more lightweight versions of what you normally wear. Loose cotton or linen clothes are much cooler than tight or skimpy clothes. It isn't rocket science.

And those complaining about it being too bright - why aren't you wearing sunglasses and a hat?

I do wear sunglasses (pretty much year round) and a hat and it still affects me significantly.

I’ve never been great in the heat, even when I was a skinny teenager. I’m even worse now I’m fat and perimenopausal with a health condition that affects my temperature regulation.

What I find annoying about the comments on these threads is that it’s seen to be acceptable to be unhappy in the winter when it’s grey and cold but us who are the opposite are pretty much ridiculed.

Misthios · 19/05/2024 21:48

Probably because we get 11.5 months of winter and 2 weeks of summer and you still all moan about it.

Bringbackthebeaver · 19/05/2024 21:51

Maybe it's similar to reasons why some people don't like periods like Christmas and can find it triggering.

If you are feeling low yourself or not at a great place in your life, it can be difficult to hear/ see others enjoying carefree, happy times.

Goldenphoenix · 19/05/2024 21:52

I swear I get SAD in the Summer. I find the light evenings really disconcerting and find it hard to relax when it's light till late. Also find the increasingly hot Summers suffocating, the heat makes me feel panicked. I look forward to Autumn coming and dark, cosy evenings returning.

DustyMaiden · 19/05/2024 21:57

Too hot, have windows open too noisy. Flies wasp's, gnats. Bread and potatoes go mouldy. I love spring and autumn.

StaunchMomma · 19/05/2024 22:10

OH MY GOD!! SAME!!

I've never met anyone else who hates the summer!

It's honestly like having reverse SAD for me - I wake up, see it's sunny and feel miserable.

I try not to talk about it because it's uncomfortable hating something that literally everyone else loves! I always laugh it off as I'm the 'Summer Grinch' etc.

I also try not to bring it up because then people ask me what I don't like about it and my list is EXTENSIVE 😂

Once I start on about squinting and sandals and flowy fabrics and barbecues and pub gardens and men not wearing shirts and hot seats and sweaty nights and shit summer dresses and hay fever and fecking ants and sun cream and sunburn and......well, I could go on (and on, and on) but it just never goes down well 😆

I will be counting down the days to autumnal breezes, cardigans and boots. We will get through this, guys!

Userjal · 19/05/2024 22:14

Yes! 100% with this although I’m getting better. I discovered last summer it’s probably due to the fact my parents would drink heavily in the summer, they’d be outdoors and argue and I’d just feel panicked, I haven’t lived at home for years but still dread the summer months so possibly some kind of childhood trauma. I feel secure in a cosy winter home

Harriet766 · 19/05/2024 22:30

I love the sun and the light. And I love how cheerful and upbeat everyone seems when the weather improves. But…oh my god do I HATE the heat. That 40 degree nightmare nearly killed me, and I dread a repeat. I’d prefer anything to that - snow, rain, thunderstorms, anything. It’s quite literally torture.

Overcrowding makes it even worse. There are just too many people, full stop. Developers are jamming disgusting little rabbit hutch houses onto every bit of available land, and the traffic is now beyond a joke. And btw, can someone please tell me how these arseholes get away with modifying their cars so they screech and explode? I thought it was illegal. Heat is bad enough when you’re alone in a desert, but when you live on a small, noisy, crowded island it’s unbearable.

I am typing this while I watch the BBC4 repeat of a 1964 documentary on Philip Larkin, made by John Betjeman. It’s filmed in Hull, and the sense of space and silence is really striking. When this was filmed, the world’s population was three billion. It’s now eight billion. Madness. No doubt anyone reading this is thinking wtf are you talking about? What has that got to do with the summer!? But the heat magnifies everything. I can just about cope with the noise and overcrowding when it’s cold and dark. But when it’s sunny and hot it drives me mad.

MsLuxLisbon · 19/05/2024 22:38

Your poor kids.

That’s not quite true though is it? Last year was objectively better for me but the year before was vile.

Still, there’s no need to ridicule people who genuinely suffer. And actually, I don’t moan - I try and get on with it as best I can.

You must have loved last year, then!

Right!? I could understand and sympathise if the OP and others lived in certain countries: I wouldn't like heat all year round. But in this country we are lucky to even get a summer, so I have no idea what they are even whining about!

Pinkfluffypencilcase · 19/05/2024 23:01

Yes last year was great! No horrid heatwave.

nothingsforgotten · 19/05/2024 23:03

I believe you as it seems to be a common thing on MN.

I do think you are odd however, sorry. I've never actually heard anyone say they hate summer. Some people don't like very hot weather, but most people like summer in my real life experience. It's autumn where I live and already I am longing for summer, it can't come quick enough. Life is so much easier in summer.

I'm also struggling to understand why happiness and laughter are bad things?

MrsTerryPratchett · 19/05/2024 23:04

Wasps and sweaty, red, shirtless men in the supermarket. Envy

Tight clothes are really uncomfortable in hot weather.

Totally agree!! I never fail to understand why people don't get this. A floaty skirt and top are far more cool to wear in heat than shorts and a skimpy tight top. I live in cotton and linen skirts and tops in summer.

nothingsforgotten · 19/05/2024 23:16

blacksax · 19/05/2024 18:46

I've never much liked hot, sunny weather - and that includes my teenage years and young adulthood when I was as thin as a rake, so fuck all to do with being fat, as some posters insinuate.

The bright light hurts my eyes and I have to wear sunglasses the entire time.

I don't like the sunshine beating down on my head, even when I have a hat on. It gives me a headache and the hat makes my forehead sweat.

I get prickly heat.

I'm allergic to most suntan lotion.

I dislike the sensation of suntan lotion on my skin, especially if some kid runs past on the beach and kicks sand on you.

I don't like sunbathing.

I'm fair-haired with pale freckly skin and burn easily.

I have had a second-degree burn from getting sunburnt on a small patch of skin I missed with the lotion. In May. In the UK.

I get hay fever.

I get a rash from sitting on the grass.

I have had sunstroke and I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

These days I have to contend with menopausal hot flushes as well.

I'm sure I'm not alone in not liking summer all that much. I yearn for autumn.

I have suffered from everything you mention at some stage, apart from the headache, the rash from grass, and the menopausal hot flushes. I get hay fever all year around, in fact it is often worse in the cooler months. I can't go outside even in winter without sunglasses, and I'm not thin.

And I bloody love summer, and I'm in NZ where we get longer, hotter summers than in the UK.

PearlKoala · 19/05/2024 23:25

I love the summer but my body doesn't. I have POTS and the hot weather means my heart starts racing, I feel light headed, get headaches, brain fog, tiredness etc. I try to enjoy it but always end up feeling really ill. I hate the cold and rain even more though, I have dogs so can't just snuggle under a blanket all winter, I have to go out twice a day, every day. I've started just accepting that warmer weather means I have to take more time to rest so I've bought myself a hammock and plan to take it easy from the comfort of my cocoon. Its a hard life but someone has to do it....

Sushilover14 · 19/05/2024 23:26

I like the warm weather. I don’t like how it brings more noisy people and kids out though. Autumn is my favourite season.
