What's a nice, smooth red wine to drink?

I tried an Australian merlot last week that I bought from Tesco but it was fairly sharp on the tongue and I couldn't finish the bottler.

I am currently drinking a french cabernet sauvignon and it's better than the wine I had last week but it's still a little bit sharp on the tongue.

I am looking for a smooth red wine to drink. Something that would be easy to drink.

Any recommendations for me and thanks.

We tried snoop dog tonight and it was actually not at all bad, would recommend for an enjoyable easy red. Cool bottle too.

I found this quite sickly, like boozy ribena 🤣

Jamshed Shiraz

I love Faustino Rioja.

qotsa · 12/05/2024 22:52

Definitely a Malbec or a reserva Rioja 👌🏽

Jam!!! I get it in a box from tesco. Its absolutely gorgeous, non of the red wine after taste

Agree withsoupfiend re NW wines, so not get on with them at all and they give me a crappy headache. I like Rioja, pinot noir or something big like a Barolo or Amarone.

I'm probably a heathen as it's a blend but I always grab this from the Co-op as an easy drinking red

I love the 19 crimes that has been aged in rum barrels.
I also love chateau neuf du pape.

Barefoot Jammy Red 😋

SandInSandwiches · 12/05/2024 23:43

Another vote for Jamshed Shiraz.

As well as a bit " sharp" think about whether you like the big reds or a more fragrant offering.
Beaujolais ( Gamay grape) is lighter but smooth and lots of flavour. I rate it for summer red drinking. If you go to a wine shop like Majestic or something they often have one for tasting as it's so appealing.

Australian Cabernet Shiraz

I like 19 Crimes; is easy drinking (although my son was very snooty about it)

Errazuriz Estate Cabernet Sauv is very nice; was drinking it tonight.

Some USA ones are good; although they can be a bit panda pop.

Used to be a nice reasonably priced one called Muriel, a Rioja that turns up in co op now & then.

I think M&S is quite a good place to look.

I don’t care if it’s a blend, it’s delightful. Plus 14.5% - what’s not to like?

In all seriousness- not that I wasn’t serious about that wine because it’s lovely. You’re usually reasonably safe with a Malbec. Shiraz can really vary. I tend not to like Italian reds as they’re usually low alcohol and insipid, except Barolo which is magnifique.

if in doubt? I’d always, always choose a soft southern French red: cotes du rhone, etc. Can’t really miss with them.

Chianti or Sangiovese- very mellow red wine, soft tannins.

I'll put together some antipasti to go with that lovely Sangiovese. ☺️

Aldi for a lovely organic Malbec
