What's a nice, smooth red wine to drink?

I tried an Australian merlot last week that I bought from Tesco but it was fairly sharp on the tongue and I couldn't finish the bottler.

I am currently drinking a french cabernet sauvignon and it's better than the wine I had last week but it's still a little bit sharp on the tongue.

I am looking for a smooth red wine to drink. Something that would be easy to drink.

Any recommendations for me and thanks.

Tannins cake maker wine sharper to drink, so go for wines that are low in tannins and you should be good.

this is excellent - was recomended on saturday kitchen about 10 years ago and weve been drinking it ever since!

Us too! It's soft, smooth & goes with everything

I also came here to say Cabalie, it's lovely and I'm disappointed if I have to drink something else. We got a decent black Friday offer so often take a bottle when we go anywhere!

Black Stump from Laithwaites is also not bad.

But for a cheaper one the jamshed & jammy red roo's are good.

Smooth + soft = valpolicella

Rich + smooth = Ravenswood zinfandel

Both my favourite reds.

I’d also vote for Cabalie and Black Stump from Sunday Times wine club. Waxed Bat is good too.

Another vote for Malbec 🤤

The Guv'nor from Majestic wines. Such an easy wine to drink.

Not a fan of The Guv'nor VIP though - too heavy.

ladygindiva · 13/05/2024 13:35

Pinot noir. The best budget one is la bicycleta about £6 from Tesco.

ladygindiva · 13/05/2024 13:36

I'm not convinced any of the so called jammy wines are actually wine. They taste like ribena and imo are gross.

frozendaisy · 13/05/2024 14:10

What budget range?

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 13/05/2024 14:13

A French Pinot Noir should be quite mellow and lighter on the tannins which can be challenging if you aren't a red wine regular

Lemonyfuckit · 13/05/2024 14:14

Majestic wine The Guv'nor (which I just looked up the grapes - it's a Tempranillo blend). Very smooth and easy drinking in my opinion.

Majestic do a red wine called Guv'nor. We've drunk gallons of it over the years. They do a VIP version too but didn't think that was worth the extra £3 a bottle

Snap - came on to say the same.

This is a personal fave of mine, lovely Malbec

McGuigans, 19 Crimes and Yellow Tail are my regulars. I drink far too much so go for the cheaper but quaffable end.
I also really like Diablo Dark Red and Diablo Black Cabernet Sauvignon when on offer but those 2 are a bit heavier and are better with food

Hyperion100 · 13/05/2024 14:24

Lush & Zin Primitivo from Majestic

You can get a nice smooth merlot, but you have to buy a bottle and wait until it is at least 10 years old.

It's as rough as anything if it hasn't been aged long enough.

SecondClassmyass · 13/05/2024 14:56

Pinot Noir from Central Otago

amicissimma · 15/05/2024 11:05

Having done a tasting course a while ago, I think Trivento Reserve Malbec takes a lot of beating. But it's very much lacking in snob value.

HairGodsHelpMe · 15/05/2024 16:51

Thanks for all of the recommendations. I enjoyed some Buckfast and pinot noir on different nights since posting this.

I got extremely drunk on Guv'nor at a friend's once. Gosh it went down a treat!

Otherwise, a malbec is my usual go to.

Womanofcustard · 15/05/2024 17:28

Have you tried French wines? I would recommend Cote de Rhone and Languedoc (not accurate spellings, sorry)

Darklane · 15/05/2024 17:38

Another vote for valpolicella
Asda, A Nice Drop of Shiraz is one we get through lots of.
Don't like Malbec, too cloying.

Malbecfan · 15/05/2024 17:52

If you normally like Merlot, you probably won't enjoy Shiraz/Syrah or Malbec. Rioja, Côtes du Rhône or Cabernet Sauvignon might be better. I'm the opposite (see username) - I find Merlot bland but I'm partial to a Malbec, Tempranillo or Shiraz. Sometimes Lidl has a really nice Malbec on offer, so it's always worth looking. Jam Shed is quite nice as is Yellowtail mentioned up-thread. Just remembered that Tesco Finest Malbec is really good too.

Perfectpots · 15/05/2024 17:56

I always find Rioja to be good - v reliable. Campo Vieja

Also like malbec though they do vary, and cab sauvignon.

I also like 19 Crimes red wine.
