What's a nice, smooth red wine to drink?

HairGodsHelpMe · 12/05/2024 21:28

I tried an Australian merlot last week that I bought from Tesco but it was fairly sharp on the tongue and I couldn't finish the bottler.

I am currently drinking a french cabernet sauvignon and it's better than the wine I had last week but it's still a little bit sharp on the tongue.

I am looking for a smooth red wine to drink. Something that would be easy to drink.

Any recommendations for me and thanks.

Have never had a bad Cote du Rhone, regardless of price point.

Cabalie!! It's the most dreamiest easiest drinking red I've ever tasted and I swear i can feel the next day effects much less than with other reds. Available at Laithwaites and Sunday times wine club and is often in one of their new customer crates which are excellent value.

Another shout for Jammy Red Roo - and I don't like red wine!

SpentAll · 13/05/2024 07:05

I find Pinot Noir really thin and meh
For me:
Barefoot Malbec or Merlot
Dark Horse Malbec
Trivento Reserve Malbec
Primitivo
Apothic Red

Rioja

OneBadKitty · 13/05/2024 07:17

Beaugolais is the smoothest for me- but it depends on the particular bottle and brand more than the variety of wine. Any type of wine can be sharp. The Louis Jadot one is particularly good within the £12 range.

OneBadKitty · 13/05/2024 07:18

Also, the Jam Shed malbec is smooth and soft and slightly sweet for a red wine.

HesterRoon · 13/05/2024 07:19

I dislike Malbec-too heavy and smoky. Tesco finest Douro is a wonderful red wine-and only around 12% abv which is rare for red wine these days. Fleurie is light and smooth.

HesterRoon · 13/05/2024 07:20

agree with Cotes de Rhone but watch the alcohol-some are 15%!

I agree. It's very soft and sweet..... almost like alcoholic ribena but probably a good one if you're not sure whether you like red wine.

There's a lovely red in Waitrose called Terre de Faino it has an orange label. It's about £10.
It's so rich & smooth. Never found anything quite like it.

It's an Italian wine & the grape is Primitivo. It's made by drying the grapes slightly before the wine is produced which is what makes it so smooth.

A good wine requires good food, company and ambiance . I think a wine is good when you realise that half the bottle is gone before you comment on the wine.

jazzyfazzy766 · 13/05/2024 07:40

Tesco finest Argentinian malbec is lovely.

Oganesson118 · 13/05/2024 07:43

Pinot Noir is very easy drinking, more so than Malbec for me.

Myneighboursandtheirfuckingbasketball · 13/05/2024 07:49

@countdowntomexico I also came on to say Cabalie - my absolute favourite! DH doesn't usually drink red and even he likes it

Viviennemary · 13/05/2024 07:54

I've found Tescos wine pretty dire compared to other supermarkets. Talking about cheaper wine under £10. Stopped buying wine from there.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 13/05/2024 07:59

Mcguigans Cabernet Sauvingon

LunaModule · 13/05/2024 08:41

A montepulciano

Normandy144 · 13/05/2024 08:47

Porta 6 is a brilliant easy drinking Portuguese red. You can get it in majestic as they championed It first but other supermarket stock it now. It was recommended to us a few years ago and it remains a huge favourite.

Lostmum1906 · 13/05/2024 08:48

Something Grenache heavy
a cote du rhone as an example

Musicaltheatremum · 13/05/2024 09:04

Majestic do a red wine called Guv'nor. We've drunk gallons of it over the years. They do a VIP version too but didn't think that was worth the extra £3 a bottle

19 Crimes, The Uprising, Australian, 13.5%

Most Wanted, Italy, Puglia, also 13.5%

I do like 19 Crimes - especilly this one "The Old Man" we call it but in some wine circles snobs deride them as blends with added flavours to make them a smooth palatable drink. They are made by Diageo the world's biggest booze company in huge factories apparently.

Beachcomber74 · 13/05/2024 07:09

Rioja

A second vote for that I've rarely had bad one and they are often cheaper than the competition.

Illbefinejustbloodyfine · 13/05/2024 09:14

Jammy Red Roo - it's a good introduction to red wine I think, very easy to drink even for those who dobt like red wine.
