I'm South East, but it's on my bucket list to see it in real life 🤞🏽.

No I didn’t! Because I didn’t realise there was anything to photograph, it’s only really now that I’m considering the haze could have been the lights, but at the time I was looking for colours, as I’m sure most people were!
How did everyone else know to take a photo of something they couldn’t see?!

I realised it a few years ago when I knew there were lights but I couldn't see them so took a picture to see what happened and saw the lights properly. I've only once seen them with the naked eye, when I was in Lapland, and even then it was just a green haze but I bet a picture would have shown something amazing (but that was the 90s, don't think my mum's bog standard film camera would have picked up much!)

Try again tonight - it should be there again so take your camera on night mode and give it a go! The colours were absolutely incredible.

The cloud you saw may actually have been it, a lot of it looked like streaky clouds to the naked eye. Especially with light pollution.
I'm in East Sussex too and we saw a lot more from up a nearby hill than we could see from the village, but even from towns they were visible with a camera.

Ohh maybe it was it! It seemed like a strange cloud but I expected it to move around a bit. I’ll have another look tonight from the hills through my phone camera

Do you have the Aurora Watch UK app?

It shows how high the activity is at different times x

It appeared a bit like laser strobes where I was watching. They were a faint green/ pale pink to the naked eye but some were also a very pale grey in the dark sky. I’d just point your camera at any unusual shapes 😀

Would love to see pics if anyone manages to spot them

Whitley Bay last night, about 9:30.

I'm a mile outside Whitley. was out walking with DD around that time last night. Came home just after 10 and it just seemed like it was still far too light, so I wasn't really looking.

Got some great pics just in the back garden around 11.30, but had been tempted to pop down to St Mary's. I often go for the meteor showers. Going down tonight probably along with hundreds of others so fingers crossed cloud doesn't spoil things

Unfortunately what you can see by eye is nothing compared to what's on camera.

I could see movement and a tiny bit of purple and green by eye, but the camera shots were something else altogether. Make sure you use night mode and max exposure for the best chance of a good photo!

+ + Whitley Bay last night, about 9:30.

So beautiful 🤩

Not bad, is it? Only about 150 metres from our house, you couldn't see anything until on the beach.

My pic from last night (north Scotland)

Loads of people on our neighbourhood board posted stunning photos even with street lamps near. So I popped out for a look from my front garden.

I now understand that using max exposure means you need a very steady hand or else you get this…

I give you Wobbly Street Lamp 😂🤦🏻‍♀️

As well as downloading the Aurora app I recommend following “VirtualAstro” on Facebook, they are great at putting up reminders about stuff like this, meteor showers, ISS passes etc.

The lights will be back tonight (subject to cloud cover) but may not extend as far south. This article has lots of tips on what to do to maximise your likelihood of seeing them, but remember you will the most vivid colours through your phone and not with the naked eye.

Northern Lights: How to see them in the UK tonight

Missed the Northern lights last night? Don't worry, there will be another opportunity to see them tonight. Here's how.

At 9:30 we couldn't see anything with the naked eye but by midnight the pinks were so strong and completely visible. My son who has seen the lights in Iceland said this was the clearest and best he has ever seen.

HotBotHarry · 11/05/2024 15:47

The green one was only really visible with the camera (9:30) but the pink was just like it appears here with the naked eye. (Midnight).
