I'm South East, but it's on my bucket list to see it in real life 🤞🏽.

I was scrolling through facebook and our neighbourhood group popped up with some stunning photos, so I went to the window and saw.....fuck all! Looked through my phone and took a few pics and fuck all on that too 😫

Am i understanding correctly that to you don't need to actually take a picture /video? Just looking through the camera is enough? If that's the case I wish I'd known that last night, I wandered round the streets last night, trying to see them. With the naked eye I think the sky looked a bit whiter than normal, I pointed my phone north and took 2 or 3 pics then looked and them and saw pink. If I could have just watched through my camera it would have felt more real/impressive to me as I could have done that for a few minutes and seen them in real time, rather then just in a photo.

Yes that’s right, just viewing through the phone you could see the colours more vibrantly. To the naked eye I could see the shapes and the colours were grey, faint green and pink. The camera picked the colours up more without the need for a photo. I’ve attached though some images using night mode, which is brighter and without night mode which was more like what the naked eye could see.

photo’s didn’t attach 😂 I’ll add separately

Are they visible again tonight?

ClairemacL · 11/05/2024 09:05

I think they’re supposed to be!

I tried to stay up but it wasn't getting dark enough and I was so tired. Really annoyed with myself now, I should have just driven somewhere away from street lights and it probably would have been dark enough.

I'm so gutted I missed this. Is it expected to happen again tonight? Do you just have to look at the sky all night or is there a time it's more likely to happen?

Apparently so but not as bright .

Sussex

Incredible!! What time was this? I’m in East Sussex and had a quick check about 10pm and before bed at 12. Thought I saw something but it was just a cloud, hoping to see them tonight 🙏

JeysusH · 11/05/2024 09:25

You could see with the naked eye very clearly here, we have no street lights for miles. There were a few meteors too!.

I’m in Sussex too. It was just about visible with a camera at 10.15pm, but was best around 11.30-12. I’ve seen a post to say it was even better at 2am but it had faded around 1am so I went to bed.

Dh took loads of photos which is really best way to see all the colours .
We've just sold our house and it really felt like a goodbye and thanks for many wonderful years moment .
I'm quite teary even writing that

The cloud you saw may actually have been it, a lot of it looked like streaky clouds to the naked eye. Especially with light pollution.
I'm in East Sussex too and we saw a lot more from up a nearby hill than we could see from the village, but even from towns they were visible with a camera.

Thank you, maybe I'll try again tonight just looking through the camera.

Thank you so much for this thread - I was having a shit night - cried my eyes out as I'm missing my nana who passed away a lot recently.

I'm still sad, but I'm literally going to bed ticking something off the bucket list. Wouldn't have known if it wasn't for this thread ❤️

I was thinking about my Dad watching the spectator event... and thinking he's sending me this show...sending love

Anonymous2025 · 11/05/2024 09:46

I feel like I’m the only person in the country who didn’t see it!! There were people just down the road from me who put stunning photos of it instagram, taken from their gardens, so I was outside waiting and crossing my fingers… nothing. So gutted!

Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes · 11/05/2024 02:07

This is going to sound stupid. But I was sure I could hear them. Do they make sounds?!

@Damnyourheadshoulderskneesandtoes - my Dad was from Shetland and he always said he could hear them.

I’m gutted I missed them. I’m on the south coast and didn’t think we’d see them but my Facebook is full of gorgeous photos. It’s on my bucket list and they were on my doorstep whilst I was asleep 😔

I’m definitely staying up tonight and hoping for a repeat show.

What time did you look - we saw them around 10-11:30pm, but when I looked again around midnight they were gone!

bignosebignose · 11/05/2024 10:00

I’ve only read the OP’s posts so this has probably already been said, but I hadn’t realised until last night that the lights look (or at least did last night) mainly white to the naked eye and taking a picture reveals far more colour. Here are a few from our garden here Oop North.

@poppymango did you look through your phone? I couldn't see anything but a grey trail with naked eye but camera showed them.

I tried taking pics through my phone as a friend suggested last night that they might not have been obvious to the naked eye, but no luck. I think I was just too late to catch them. Any chance they’ll be back tonight I wonder…? 👀
