I'm South East, but it's on my bucket list to see it in real life 🤞🏽.

This is going to sound stupid. But I was sure I could hear them. Do they make sounds?!

I also felt I could 'hear' something as they danced around in the sky.

I googled, and it appears they do make sounds.

Absolutely nothing where I am in the West Midlands - gutted! Hopefully a better chance either tonight or tomorrow. High cloud spoiled it for us.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/05/2024 07:25

Was going to get up, but I got a rare as hens' teeth migraine and was asleep before 10pm (I'm a 2.30am if I'm lucky person and have been since I was about 13).

There's always tonight, though.

It wasn’t as clear as this to the naked eye but pretty amazing.

Ah I saw nothing my Facebook is full of pretty pictures this morning, I had to stop looking out my window because some neighbours decided to fight in the street !

Here in Vancouver, Canada right now!!!

Tip: look through your phone's camera picture or video setting to see the colours if you don't see anything or just "light clouds" because the "clouds" are it.

That's totally normal. I live in Northern BC in Canada and we frequently see the Northern Lights. It's generally faint green and pink/purple streaks, but point your cellphone camera at the sky and it looks like it's really vibrant. I feel so sorry for people who pay a fortune for trips to view the Aurora Borealis, thinking that they'll see what people post online, and they see a dull green stripe in the night sky.

Was just chatting about this here in Vancouver. ☺️

I've been trying to see this all my life
Someone posted on local Facebook last night and I literally sat in back garden watching the most amazing light show I could have hoped for .
Dh took loads of photos which is really best way to see all the colours .
We've just sold our house and it really felt like a goodbye and thanks for many wonderful years moment .
I'm quite teary even writing that

RagzRebooted · 11/05/2024 08:25

I hadn't heard it was happening so had gone to bed. DS2 came back home around 11:15pm and told me he might go back out because the Northern lights were happening. So I got dressed, got DD up and DS1 and drove them all out to the nearest hilltop for an hour. We got some amazing photos, though what was visible with the naked eye wasn't anything like them but it was still magical.
The best part was the quality time with my teens and an experience we will remember forever (I'm not normally one for soppy 'making memories' posts but this really was the best part). Sad DH missed it as he was stuck at work and had already gone to sleep.

Am i understanding correctly that to you don't need to actually take a picture /video? Just looking through the camera is enough? If that's the case I wish I'd known that last night, I wandered round the streets last night, trying to see them. With the naked eye I think the sky looked a bit whiter than normal, I pointed my phone north and took 2 or 3 pics then looked and them and saw pink. If I could have just watched through my camera it would have felt more real/impressive to me as I could have done that for a few minutes and seen them in real time, rather then just in a photo.

That is really beautiful, and very poignant.

I’m so glad you got to see them.

I still feel elated this morning, it really was beautiful and the fact that my 15 year old son wanted to join me and I saw his excitement too made it even better x

Whoever said that the colours aren’t like that in real life is wrong. Twice I’ve been to Iceland and the colours and dancing are amazing vibrant and visible to the naked eye if you get a good show.
