KS isn't after the Reform vote. Reform will scoop up the racist/far right vote.

KS is rightly focusing on people who want to restore public services. Gender isn't a top priority in the scheme of things. We're going to see a lot of hold the nose and tactical voting, and pragmatism is needed to avoid 5 more years of this.

Zonder · 10/05/2024 12:37

I found Jess "TWAW" Phillips' apparent disgust at NE's treatment of women quite obscene tbh.

Why? I was quite disgusted too.

I agree with your second paragraph, but why did he welcome NE in if it wasn't as a sop to the racists?

I am pleased that he has been clear about ditching the Rwanda plan. That actually pushes me back to thinking about voting for Labour.

BIossomtoes · 10/05/2024 13:08

He welcomed her in because it will make a Labour vote more palatable to wavering/disillusioned Tories. It’s not difficult.

user8800 · 10/05/2024 13:14

Oh, I'm well aware it's not a top priority.

There is no possible doubt there.

JP is a fucking hypocrite. Her own TWAW views put women and girls at risk but that's ok cos she's labour?

Nope.

Tbf he doesn't have a choice.

It's a ridiculous policy that failed to win the support of the voters it was aimed at and costs a fortune which is not tenable going forward 🤷‍♀️

I have to say, based on labours recent policy decisions, if it had been popular, I think he'd have continued with it....

Cleverley being not so clever again

X (twitter.com)

"When Keir Starmer talks about illegal migration, this is who he wants to be the Home Secretary.

This is who he would put in charge of stopping the boats…"

He then links to an article by Yvette Cooper urging the Government to let in 10,000 Syrian refugees.

And then

Syrian Refugees | Rt Hon James Cleverly MP (cleverly4braintree.com)

It makes a labour vote less palatable to others though.

Hmmm, I’m not sure about that. It’s caused a lot of froth but I’d be surprised if it had much impact at the ballot box. It would be different if she wasn’t standing down at the end of this parliament. I do think it’s a mistake not to restore the whip to Diane Abbott.

I agree with you 100%.

KS has learned the art of dirty politics. Sadly, that's how you need to play if you want to win, as evidenced by so many decades of Tory rule. It's sad, but it's reality.

Notonthestairs · 10/05/2024 14:23

I dont think this is the same as for example the Conservatives throwing open their arms to Farage - they want Farage on board and must know that the price for that would be shaping policy & messaging, and presumably party chairman/peerage.

Elphicke is there to acknowledge that Labour's existing policy on border control and housing are practical, workable and necessary. She wont get to formulate policy and will stand down whenever the bloody election is finally called.
I'm not thrilled that she's a giant distraction from the shitshows in our public services. The wording of that Sam Freedman thread about 'suppressing demand' for SN services is fucking haunting me.

Dianne Abbott is doubly damned for being not only a woman, but a POC.

It might be hard for younger folk to understand what a huge deal it was when she was first elected to parliament. Representation matters. She was a trailblazer.

I'm not a fan of hers, but I agree it's a mistake not restoring the whip to her.

The Farage thing is E-minus whatabouttery from the perpetually thick. Starting with the fact that Farage isn't an MP. Not will he ever be one. This is a man whose only claim to electoral success has been as an MEP. Which - understandably - he can't really dine out on.

Also don't you have to pay fees to join a party ? (You can tell I never have 😀)

He doesn't have to be an MP to be made party chairman or treasurer.
Do you really think Johnson paid his own subs?!

user8800 · 10/05/2024 15:46

Or they could "do a Cameron "...

Make him a Lord and then make him a cabinet minister

I wouldn't put anything past those tory fuckers

Nope.

What has Jess Phillips said? she is a champion for DV victims and wants single sex spaces protected.

I don't really get that a party with so many female MP's is going to be harmful to women.

From what i can see, the Tories are devastating for women and girls, not least on maternity, cuts to DV services & increasing poverty.

pointythings · 10/05/2024 19:12

@Alexandra2001 for some people, only being virulently anti trans is good enough in a politician. And apparently Labour are worse, despite the fact that the whole trans shitshow happened under the Tories. I will never get it. I'm all about good public services, because these predominantly benefit women and children. I'm about protection for renters (remind me who hasn't implemented the ban on 21 day evictions, was that Labour?) because again, it impacts mostly women. I'm in favour of finding councils better, because councils services mostly affect women.

But apparently that isn't good enough.

And no, I don't support men in women's prisons, women's sports, women's NHS wards. But all of that is happening under the Tories.

RafaistheKingofClay · 10/05/2024 19:23

Absolutely loving all the Tory MPs talking about what terrible views Elphicke has so it’s a surprise Starmer accepted her while ignoring the fact the Tories were quite happy for her to talk about those views when she was a member of their party. Especially since a lot of those are now mainstream Tory views.
