The blood scandal report has been published, I have only read parts so far but is horrific Angry

Yes, the more that is revealed, the worse it gets. Destroying relevant documents/medical records along the way. I don't know how successive governments have got away with sidelining this issue for as long as they have.

L1ttledrummergirl · 20/05/2024 14:00

Rishi Sunak and the ever decreasing majority?

pointythings · 20/05/2024 14:01

SerendipityJane · 20/05/2024 13:51

Not that I want a supermajority Labour government because that's bad for democracy,

Is it ?

It would certainly allow the government to be relaxed about their own MPs voting against bills which are still quite safe to pass. If said government wanted that. It's certainly no more bad for democracy than the current whipped system which replaces conscience.

That's a very valid point, but I would (eventually) like to see a competent and viable opposition party emerge.

I agree that less whipped voting would be good as a demonstration of competent government without coercion.

We've also had a spate of "dine and runs" in our town - one chap was filmed finishing off pork chops before looking about shiftily and pegging it. There have been debates about charging people before they eat if they sit outside!

We also have narrow cobbled pavements and the A frame boards are not allowed on pavements as they are deemed an obstruction.

I'm not sure how Kemi thought we all did the "eat out to spread the virus about" either...

Catching up here but... "pegging it" or "legging it" @fabio12 ? To me they're somewhat different things!!! 😃

Hope you are feeling ok @Piggywaspushed and @MrTiddlesTheCat (saw you on another thread)

Hello again @AdamRyan !

Thread title: Sunak: Still in a river in Egypt

Love it! Bizarrely I got my rivers confused briefly and thought you were insinuating that Rishi is in Seine 😂

Love it. That’s perfect.

I believe for the pedants it should be "Sunak:" (appropriately a colon rather than a full stop).

tobee · 20/05/2024 14:42

That took me waaaaay too long to work out! 😬

pointythings · 20/05/2024 14:43

Notwithstanding @SerendipityJane 's point above which I think is very true more generally I do think single issue voters find it very hard to understand that most voters are multi-issue and don't see their issue as existential. This fact plus the fact the centre is a very broad spectrum is what Labour are exploiting - they don't need to get everything right if enough of the centre think Labour will deliver on 2-3 of their 6 pledges. Even if 60% of the country were thinking about single sex spaces when voting provided they thought schools/hospitals/economic stability/stopping the boats/clean energy and the other one mattered too those other six things would outweigh the single sex spaces issue and secure a Labour vote. The Tories are then gifting them what may well be an epic election win by failing to step up and deliver any meaningful plan on the centrist issues like economic stability people mainly care about.

This has always been a problem for small parties. Greens cannot see that other people do not spend as much time as them thinking about the climate crisis. Reform only talk to people as invested in immigration as them. As a result they cannot translate their concerns into wider political success. It is actually very difficult to talk to people who disagree with us and the internet has made it easier than ever to only talk to people who disagree with us.

As a psychologist I think feelings have a lot more to do with political behaviour than rationality. This is why the Tory politicians keep picking on quite far-right talking points and prefer audiences which won't challenge them. Its a shit strategy for winning an election, but this move to the margins and single issues is a very sensible way to retain a sense of psychological safety when under threat. They are essentially behaving like rats going into tunnels.

Really interestin

That's my prediction.

I hope I'm wrong.

I think lots of seats, especially in areas with a high Muslim demographic, will go independent.

I also think a LOT of quiet tories might stay at home, which will mean a lower turnout.

Add to the general feeling about politicians in general atm, and I don't see a turnout above 60%

And - let's not forget - the tories will do their best to gerrymander.

(Although their efforts with voters ID seems to have had the opposite effect to their original plan!) :)

Independent MPs very very rarely get elected. According to the below, only 21 since 1950 (including "minor parties" like the Greens)

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_UK_minor_party_and_independent_MPs_elected

Most people view politics as Red v Blue and either don't bother voting if they don't like either, or pick their side.

I don't think independents will change the price of fish

I've been following the blood scandal for years so am always intrigued by how ( and when) it becomes a more widely known about issue.

It's such a sorry, shameful and sad state of affairs.

AdamRyan · 20/05/2024 15:11

Bigcoatlady · 20/05/2024 13:49

On hung parliaments that was an own goal as it meant Beth Rigby could ask him after his 'Everything is terrifying vote for us' speech that since he said he'd never go into coalition AND that the next election would return a hung parliament we are essentially looking at a Lab-Lib pact and he won't be PM so why bother? Which absolutely baffled him.

😂i missed thar. Genius!

SerendipityJane · 20/05/2024 15:13

Independent MPs very very rarely get elected.

And if they do, it's very much a local/single issue. Also I am wary of the word "independent" in politics. Like all other words in politics, it's not the dictionary definition.

Off the top of my head (and almost to prove a point) I can only remember 2 independent MPs being elected in my life. Marin Bell - who stood against the deeply unpleasant Hamiltons (cash for questions, Tory sleaze mid 90s vintage) and the guy (a doctor if memory serves) who won Wyre Forest over some issue with a local hospital.

Not quite sure about George Galloway. But that isn't a political comment.

Ken Livingstone was supposedly "independent" when he became mayor of London.

AdamRyan · 20/05/2024 15:16

Yeah, you are right.
Looking at that list only 5 of the 21 are actually independent.
George Galloway is on it 3 times! And Caroline Lucas 4. Plus UKIP 3 times too.

Hello again @AdamRyan !

We used to use it interchangeably - admittedly I'm thinking 80/90s and I am now aware of a different meaning of "pegging" 😬 He didn't hang about for that...

I agree with @MrTiddlesTheCat and think turn out will be slightly higher. I think some Reform voters are bored and seeing so much else wrong constantly are going to vote with NHS/water/education/CoL/potholes/scandals of so many natures, in mind.

The blood scandal is so shocking. I heard Clair on Woman's Hour describing their story and it was astounding how badly they've been treated by successive governments since Thatcher. I did have to note she said Theresa May at least was responsible for the enquiry. For that and her work in stopping human trafficking I still feel she is shaping up to be one of the better Tory "leaders" in recent times. Of course, I'm only saying that to throw the stapes bone to them as a parting gift. I am also hopeful that as a citizen of nowhere I might get £3k and better healthcare...

Greengablesfables · 20/05/2024 15:17

@AdamRyan
Your gang don’t wish to discuss women and children’s rights anymore. But as you rebooted the conversation.

That article does not demonstrate that Labour have committed to single sex spaces and accurate sex reporting, where single sex means sex at birth. 🤷‍♀️

AdamRyan · 20/05/2024 15:18

Why don't you pop over to the "is MN right wing" thread and join the debate there? I cba to discuss on two threads and this thread has moved on

SerendipityJane · 20/05/2024 15:23

I think some Reform voters are bored

A very little undertaken study of polling is to try to tally up the results of pre election results with the actual outcomes. Mainly because it involves data, science and reality, and none of those are sexy enough to get you onto a halfway decent radio show, Or even GB News.

However there is some suggestion that a lot of people who say they will vote "whoever" actually never vote at all.

This is a little akin to finding the few thousand people who will (despite all the protestations here) actually decide the next election. I know it ain't me. Could it be you ?

DuncinToffee · 20/05/2024 16:18

'Your gang', like in Scooby Doo and we get to unmask the villain 😂

I took me longer than should have too with Serendipity's title Blush
