"limiting the number of health and social care visas issued to 30,000 a year (last year 146,000 were issued),"

Meanwhile we have 152,000 social care vacancies
AND local councils can't afford to pay more for social care (they've been given more responsibility and huge cuts to central funding).

We certainly don't pay those in social care nearly enough. We could a lot do more to make it an attractive proposition for workers in the long term.

Voters need to understand what will happen if we suppress numbers and fail to pay more in tax to attract UK workers.

But I fear the likes of Jenrick will be hazy about what happens next.

And my guess is what happens next is that the vulnerable and the elderly suffer w/o care AND more women are forced out of work to care for family members.

Zonder · 08/05/2024 11:57

Somehow I don't think that maths can be Jenrick's strong point.

Notonthestairs · 08/05/2024 12:03

This article sums up Jenrick's priorities to a T - donors first.

Meant to say that I appreciate all the pet and flower pictures brightening up the thread.

And I do hope Adam and Rousette are just taking a break. You are both missed.

Notonthestairs · 08/05/2024 12:17

Natalie Elphlicke has defected to Labour - would not have predicted that. What did I miss?

Notonthestairs · 08/05/2024 12:20

BREAKING: Nathalie Elphicke becomes the second Conservative MP in as many weeks to defect to Labour, just as PMQs begins.

“The Conservatives have become a byword for incompetence and division”, she says.

Hhhhmmmm - they became that a long time ago.

Looks like it was entirely unexpected defection. Wonder whether this is a sudden move or something they've been keeping under wraps for a while

I may be wrong but she never struck me as a One Nation Tory. Given her reported words (BBC) about Boris has the rebel alliance left the pub?

Odd one isn't it. She'll have to work very hard to explain why now.

TokyoSushi · 08/05/2024 12:29

I think that she'll say it's because of how badly they're doing with 'stop the boats' which is obviously a big deal in her constituency. They reality however is probably that she doesn't want to lose her job and thinks she has a better chance with Labour.

DuncinToffee · 08/05/2024 12:31

Natalie Elphicke MP (Dover) has defected from the Conservative Party to the Labour Party. The Government's official majority is now 38.

CON: 344 (-21)
LAB: 204 (+2)
SNP: 43 (-5)
INDs: 18 (+18)
LDM: 15 (+4)
Others: 18 (+2)

It could be a warning to Sunak to call this blasted election asap or see one of these a day for the next 4 weeks ?

Cheguevarahamster · 08/05/2024 12:32

Good afternoon. I swore out loud when I heard about Elphicke. Too lose one MP, may be regarded as a misfortune; to lose two looks like carelessness.

Absolute shocker. Rishi was terrible at PMQs.

She will not be standing at the next election according to Election Maps UK

Elphick? Dire times and strange bedfellows. I hope her welcome into the arms of Labour will be as warm as I would extend to her myself. And not last past the next GE.

That was my first thought too.
A "Boris" manoeuvre - see which way the crowd is going and run to the front.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 08/05/2024 12:51

Labour should have told her to fuck off.

TokyoSushi · 08/05/2024 12:51

Even stranger then @DuncinToffee

Is it possible for the 'receiving ' party today 'no thanks, off you fuck to be an independent '?

Zonder · 08/05/2024 13:10

I was wondering the same @pointythings but presumably she must have discussed it with someone in labour?

DuncinToffee · 08/05/2024 13:10

Best for Britain

If one Tory MP defected each week - the current rate of attrition - the Conservatives would lose their majority by the 2nd October (in 21 weeks time).

Labour has clarified that Mike Tapp is still the Labour candidate for Dover and Natalie Elphicke is stepping down at the election

OP posts:
Evenstar · 08/05/2024 13:15

@DuncinToffee apparently the Labour candidate is ex military, should go down well in Dover
