Well that was ..... odd!

It looked like she was having a rant to an empty room though!

I stopped about halfway - it was a scattergun of insults that didn't really capture anything other than her half arsed observations. Was the photo-op with a bulldog meant to be a shot at Elphicke though?

Personally I found this far more precise https://kentandsurreybylines.co.uk/politics/conservative-political-campaigning/

Political campaigning by the Conservatives is toxic

Political campaigning by the Conservative Party for mayoral and local elections is divisive and toxic – we examine some evidence.

All that is doubtless true but its not a battle worth pursuing, Labour need to move on and not throw the Tories a life line, the eye must be on the greater prize & don't fall into infighting, divided parties don't win GE's as the Tories may well find out.

Completely different if she was then going to be a Labour candidate or be an advisor on immigration policy.

Should Rwanda prove to be a successful deterrent, Labour will have its hands full on explaining what they will do with the policy...... NE will then be insignificant.

My point was that it was completely unnecessary to take her and considering how much at odds she is with the views Starmer currently espouses (this week) it just sends a message to the party and the public that anything goes.

Poulter was a political irrelevance - half the Tories didn't know who he was. Wakefield - I didn't trust him and wasn't a fan but no profile to speak off. Both will disappear rapidly, the publicity was probably worth it.

NE has a profile - its a loud and noisy profile which is entirely at odds with anything Labour is supposed to be promoting.

Who next, Suella Braverman? NE is her kindred spirit politically. Where do you draw the line?

BIossomtoes · 10/05/2024 08:26

Should Rwanda prove to be a successful deterrent

It’s not going to have time to be a deterrent, surely? It’ll be ditched pretty smartly by the incoming government.

HannibalHeyes · 10/05/2024 08:27

Should Rwanda prove to be a successful deterrent

Now you're just being silly...

Well, Sky news spoke to one migrant who claims to have paid to be smuggled back to France...... imagine how interesting that would be when France demands to put French Police on UK beaches to "Arrêter les bateaux"

I doubt the policy will be a deterrent but its possible.

fabio12 · 10/05/2024 08:31

@C8H10N4O2 yes, there are plenty of people in the Tories Labour won't like. They are a cruel and idiotic collective. If they all wanted to vote Labour though no one will stop them. They are all welcome to defect and stand down. Let's nix more of the feckers!

It's done now and I think we can all move on. Jess even got an apology out of the old bulldog. I'd prefer no more photo-ops though, I agree.

DuncinToffee · 10/05/2024 08:35

There will be some more photo opportunities today I am afraid as she joins Starmer in Dover for his announcement.

But we are out of recession, 0.6% growth, the plan is working!

@DuncinToffee really really good news! That and peadophiles no longer having parental rights are the two best news stories this year IMO.

Notonthestairs · 10/05/2024 08:49

Must admit I rather agree with McDonnell that St John the Baptist would struggle to trust Elphicke's conversion. And the sincerity of her apology to the victims of her husband is impossible to assess. So yes I am uneasy.
But I am probably a bit less confident of the Conservative wipeout than some on here - I think the events of the last 8 years have understandably turned the majority of people off politics and Labour will need millions of Conservative voters to trust them and then get out and vote for them. I dont think its enough to have them sit at home, Labour need voters to actively switch horses and buy into policies over the long term.
I think there are only two areas of policy where her opinions have overlapped with Labours - methods to deter channel crossings (diplomacy and going directly after the gangs) and she's been very vocal for a long time about the failures to reach house building targets.
Will be watching closely.

Agree - it's crazy that this wasnt introduced earlier.

I can see the logic of Starmer allowing NE in to show that Labour is a broad church and you don't have to "woke" to be welcome.

But I am really uncomfortable with it. I am uncomfortable with some of Labour's rhetoric around welfare benefits too.

I am finding it harder and harder to reconcile 2024 Starmer with his younger self, when he helped the McDonald's two with their defence, for example. I don't believe that version of Starmer would have had anything to do with the likes of NE.

I won't be voting for Labour this time (though might change my mind at the ballot box!). If I was in a marginal seat I would hold my nose and do so to GTTO. I think there are lots of us lefty "hold my nose" voters out there. Starmer should be careful not to risk losing those votes at the expense of attracting a handful of Reform UK supporters or whatever it is this strategy is meant to achieve.

People are supposed to drift further to the right as they get older....

Have to admit, i'm not a Starmer fan, his stance on the EU is what does it for me.

The reasons Thatcher laid out to be in the SM are as true today as they were in the her day.... its also shocking we've cut off the chances of our younger generation as we have and that Labour don't intend to alter it.

I've just paid £10 for olive oil 🫒
I don't need the ceo of waitrose to tell me the era of cheap food is over!

@user8800 if you have an Aldi near you their olive oil is much cheaper!

Surely nothing they do exceeds the things the Tories are doing to make themselves unelectable?

It depends- if the gender issue is your top priority and you think the Tories are better for women, you might think otherwise.

HannibalHeyes · 10/05/2024 12:22

If you think the Tories care one jot about women then you're deluded...

HannibalHeyes · 10/05/2024 12:25

Informed take on why poor people keep voting Tory.

user8800 · 10/05/2024 12:26

I don't fall for the "tories are better for women" line, either.

I found Jess "TWAW" Phillips' apparent disgust at NE's treatment of women quite obscene tbh.

I've just seen on Sky News that - somewhat predictably - KS has been asked if Farage is now welcome in Labour.

As a lifelong female Labour voter, I'm just... sad and baffled.

Labour under KS have made very clear what they think of women and our rights.

His silence, as leader of the party, on the Cass Report is not acceptable to me.

Luckily, he doesn't care about my vote.

If it was ever in any doubt, it's now clear whose votes he's going after.

(He'll be disappointed - racists will vote for reform...)

What a hideous patronising article. I’d expect no less from him.

It reminds me of when some Tory said all poor people do is play bingo and drink beer. Or something similar.

Truly awful.
