There's fucktonnes of people I don't like, but have to admit were fucking good at what they did. Popular people ae part of the reason we are in this shit. I don't want popular. I want effective. See also: teachers, doctors, policemen ...

If you want popular, go and vote for Trump and see how that works out.

SerendipityJane · 19/05/2024 10:47

Maybe it's just me, tilting at windmills, but this feels ever so slightly to have the old "don't you girls worry your pretty little heads over mans business" vibe. Especially when the "political activism" is about standing up for our existing rights.

Or maybe sometimes a cigar is just a cigar ?

Edited

What was her issue with the donation? Isn't that the group Owen Jones flounced to? Seems like a weird line of questioning, but maybe its because Labour are pretty bulletproof just now.

Honestly, the best thing to do with the Kussenberg, is ignore it. Let her pretend play at being a journalist - bless! - while you find some real news.

Completely agree.

(Speaking of ignoring the Elster ,,, )

There is more joy in heaven at one sinner repenting ...

Imagining some of the more "sincere" Brexiteers discovering how loyal to the cause fellow travellers like Ratcliffe are is a nice accompaniment to a morning cafe au lait.

(Incidentally, Brexit HQ really need to nobble him. After 10 years of telling us Brexit was never about immigration, he seems to have forgotten the script).

Man United owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe backs Keir Starmer with attack on Tories

Sir Jim Ratcliffe says Britain needs a change of Government and said he has 'no questions' Labour leader Keir Starmer will do a 'very good job at running the country'

It is not about popularity, though.

Wes Streeting is morally questionable. I don't trust him and I am also not convinced he has the experience to run the health service in England.

TheABC · 19/05/2024 11:50

Wes is a political weasel to his fingertips, but it also sounds like he has done his research and he listens to his team. That's the advantage of being in opposition with the time to prepare.

It's depressing our present Health Minister is so focused on lanyards that they can't do something to tackle the backlog themselves.

Yes exactly.
I think Starmer will need to watch his back, but I think Streeting listens to his team and is prepared to change his mind to achieve whatever goal he's after. Which is better than the current ideologues.

You’d think the Health Minister would know that lanyards are an infection control risk and most patient facing staff wouldn’t be wearing one.

Maybe she should have a word with racist, misogynist business owner and extremely generous Tory donor. Frank the skank Hester. He should be told that his disgusting views have no place in politics.

One thing Mrs. Thatcher had going for her for most of her premiership was she listened to advice - even if she didn't like it.

The UK leading the world in the fight against AIDS being a good example.

Then she believed her own hype and we got the poll tax.

user8800 · 19/05/2024 14:33

It's OK.
Streeting is full of ideas!
Just get already overworked nhs staff to do overtime!
Let's just ignore that labs etc are already running over capacity.
Twat 😡

That’s why he’s proposing using privately owned facilities. Every part of the NHS is over capacity, that’s why it’s a good idea to use every part of the healthcare system, regardless of ownership. I just don’t understand why it is that the opposition comes up with a solution to a huge problem and just gets derided. Do you want things to improve @user8800?

BestIsWest · 19/05/2024 15:27

It’s not even a new solution - DM had her cataract ops last year at a private hospital on the NHS because of the post-Covid backlog. It makes sense.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 19/05/2024 15:38

Even here in socialist mecca Sweden we use private healthcare when the public health service cannot meet demand. It happens a lot as there is a 3 month guarantee on referrals.

user8800 · 19/05/2024 17:12

I know many people who work in the nhs (as I used to)

They all think his ideas are ludicrous

But I'm sure you know better

I used to work in the NHS and also have friends who still do. They see these ideas as the light at the end of the tunnel.

user8800 · 19/05/2024 17:19

Interesting thread by nhs workers discussing his ideas earlier.

It's like the 6500 new teachers...

It sounds great...but...why 6500? How have they got to that figure? Next academic years pgce take up is at an all time low?

I think - and I know how derided I will be bearing in mind the shitshow of the past 14 years - it's that I just don't trust them.

It'll boil down to who do trust even less, I suppose.

Doesn't fill me with glee.
