I am sorry you had to meet Virginia Bottomley @prettybird ! But yes its a good example of govt done properly. It happens.

Again if I wanted to be fair (I don't) I'd say the coalition did actually do a lot of what it said it would. they were things I didn't want like impose austerity and massive cuts to public services, realterm cuts to NHS budgets etc, but Osborne as chancellor was perfectly effective at making commitments, including setting up the OBR. A snivelling little toad but an effective snivelling little toad. Its just been Brexit onwards that's created the impression they are all lying scum.

Bet Starmer's just gone and written all his pledges on the side of a bus hasn't he? Bum.

Whats "effective" about Austerity? which is still on going.

Its the cause of so much thats gone wrong in this country, its now costing & will carrying on costing, far more to put right.

They have been lying scum long before Brexit.

Very effective at diverting public money into private hands. How is Baroness Mone doing these days?

'knowing what a woman is'

https://bills.parliament.uk/bills/3511/stages/18470/amendments/10014840

https://x.com/sianushka/status/1791118781827178869

A line-up of anti-abortion MPs, including George Galloway, Miriam Cates, IDS, JRM & Lee Anderson have tabled an amendment to reverse telemedicine and impose in-person consultations for women needing an abortion

The amendment from Flick Drummond says: "new clause would mean that a pregnant woman would need to have an in-person consultation before lawfully being prescribed medicine for the termination of a pregnancy."

What is the rationale for this?

What other medical interventions should be restricted to face to face only?

What are they doing about increasing GP numbers? Have they spoken to the BMA about this? What about those women who would find it difficult to access an appointment safely?

MissMarplesNiece · 17/05/2024 07:57

Apparently, according to Times Rich List, the personal wealth of Rishi Sunak and his wife has increased by £120 million over the last year. Mostly due to his wife's shares in Infosys - which has recently been awarded over £750 million worth of public contracts. No wonder Sunak was so eager to become PM - to aid the transfer of public money to his families wealth. I really don't know why we put up with this while all the time we allow them to punch down on the poorest, most vulnerable people in society.

King Charles' wealth also increased by £10 million over the last year.

Alexandra2001 · 17/05/2024 08:17

@MissMarplesNiece ...but the country has no money and we cannot possibly increase taxes on the very wealthiest, who often pay just 20% tax on their investment incomes and sometimes nothing at all.

The Belfast High Court judgment is not the only obstacle to Rishi Sunak’s flagship Illegal Migration Act

New story coming this morning on what's going on inside the Home Office, where one source told me ministers "don’t even understand what mess they have created"

Not understanding what a mess they have created is par for the course for post 2016 Tories I’d have thought.

I am guessing the loophole they are exploiting is that abortion is not technically 'legal'. Other medical interventions don't need the sanctioning of a GP in the same way.

DuncinToffee · 17/05/2024 08:42

Rationale? It won't affect women like them.

It's not that they don't understand, they do. The more chaos they can leave behind the better. They won't leave a note saying 'there's no money left', they won't need to. We are already standing in the shreds of the country this used to be, an international laughing stock after Brexit. Food banks. Filthy water. Tent cities. Restricted medical access. Entitled grabby politicians. One step away from families living on the street. They must thank their lucky stars every day that we are not the French. No tumbrils rolling here.

BIossomtoes · 17/05/2024 08:52

That’s absolutely tragic but not really relevant. She was way past the limit for a termination.

Piggywaspushed · 17/05/2024 08:52

Yes, I remember that one. Horrific.

I note that Rachael Maskell (Lab) also voted against the efforts to liberalise terminations in NI.

I can't find any evidence she is religious but it's the only reason I can come up with. Her uncle was a prominent anti death penalty campaigner so there must be a sanctity of life narrative in there somewhere.

But Angela Rayner.

Galloway really is a piece of 🤬🤬🤬

Piggywaspushed · 17/05/2024 09:32

Ponders whether to start a thread in feminism about this.

Rapidly unponders.

Am at home with shingles so quite bored.

Shingles? Ouch, you poor thing.

Well, it might not be good for your sanity to start a thread, but it is a handy illustration of what the Tories don't do for women. One for future reference.

RafaistheKingofClay · 17/05/2024 09:57

shingles is horrible so I don’t think you should make yourself feel worse by starting a thread in feminism.

DuncinToffee · 17/05/2024 10:03

Hunt is living up to his name again, giving a speech about Labour's tax rises Hmm

14 years and taxes are forecast to rise to their highest level in over 70 years and that is all he has got.

Just a reminder of what happens when women can't get abortions. I know she was pasr the termination date but the effect of being told "no" doesn't change women's minds. This life has been ruined and lowering the bar to ruin others is not progress.

They have been lying scum long before Brexit.

Its objective was to reduce the deficit - on some measures it did that, leading to Philip Hammond announcing it had been effective and could formally end in 2019. I agree completely it knackered public services in a completely inequitable way and I disagreed with the way it was implemented then and now. But if the objective was reducing the deficit then on its own terms it was an effective policy - they were not trying to reduce child poverty, reduce social inequality, reduce crime rates, improve public health, increase life expectancy or any other worthwhile objective

Britain's exceptional surge in homelessness since 2010.

Hasn't happened elsewhere. Reversing this must be an absolute priority.

@DuncinToffee awful. But look at the upwards tick from 2022 when landlords stopped being able to afford their mortgages after the Truss budget and the PRS collapsed. Literally just replied to another thread in chat from a woman facing moving her family into temp accommodation as cannot find private rented sector housing. That's two more kids in the homelessness stats. Both parents are working. It is insane that we are in this situation.
