I don't think telling young children about their own bodies is sad at all. It isn't just about preventing abuse, it's about age appropriate knowledge and understanding. It's about taking away the idea that our bodies are something shameful that must be kept secret.

My kids asked questions about body related things from about 3. We gave them answers because we had no hangups. Problems arise when parents don't do this because they have been taught shame.

In an ideal world we wouldn't need schools to do early sex ed because parents would do it. In reality, shame (often religious in origin) means a lot of parents won't or can't equip their children with basic biological facts.

'You have created silence around these issues'

A short clip of Keegan on R4 today

https://x.com/Haggis_UK/status/1791020426749002234

Emma Barnett: Can you give us an example of inappropriate content taught in some schools... how wide spread is that issue?

Gillian Keegan: I don't know

EB: You don't know?

GK: We've listened to reports

EB: That's staggering you don't know how widespread the issue is

Tough spending rules aren’t the same as spending less. It’s not letting budgets spiral out of control - HS2, for example - and not throwing money at vanity projects like Rwanda.

One of tech - certainly Googles - secret weapons is the "fail fast" button. I've lost count of all the projects they have introduced, bigged up, then cancelled abruptly.

Maybe government could look at that.

We return to my ongoing grumble that no government project ever has a defined success metric. Meaning we can never decide if it was a success or not.

And on the odd occasion someone messes up, and actually states a goal, it turns out it wasn't what everyone was thinking anyway.

"I see your cheese shop has won an award ?"
"Oh Yes sir"
"May I inquire as to what award you have won.
" Cleanest shop in town, sir."
"Well it's certainly uncontaminated by any traces of cheese"

I hope that is the case, Blossom. I am still concerned about Labour's approach to sickness and disability benefits.

Is pensioners cashing in their pensions early a good thing?
Do they need the money because they are poor?
Are they economically inactive?
How will that effect social care in the future?

They are using it to pay the gas bill, not buy fancy things, which I think is what the express is trying to imply?

cardibach · 16/05/2024 11:10

DuncinToffee · 16/05/2024 08:51

Keir Starmer will outline the first steps he would take if his party wins the next election.

Good luck with recruiting teachers. There’s a lot of work to be done before that will even be possible - the education system in England and Wales is a shit show that nobody wants to work in anymore.

Yes kind of, from the aurthor

I would suggest that the size of the raids, with the average being £47,000, is not to cover day-to-day expenses or for a luxury holiday.

More likely it is to subsidise struggling children and grandchildren with house purchases, commuter season tickets, or university and nursery fees.

Or even to support their own parents with costly social care. This is a squeezed generation who are forfeiting their own security in retirement to support their families.

Yup. I assume the same is true for many of the other priorities there - I just know about education.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 16/05/2024 11:26

I just watched Politics Live on catch up. Starmer needs to send Barry Gardiner on some sort of communications course. He's a liability. Not with the content of what he says, but the way he says it. His patronising manner makes Sunak's look positively respectful.

fabio12 · 16/05/2024 11:30

I suspect a lot of pensioners are trying to fix up houses too. The thread the other day on what NEEDS doing in people's houses show we are a far cry away from everyone having sustainable housing that is free of leaks/fully insulated etc. We've discussed how the cost of tradesmen since Brexit has skyrocketed and we know weather is getting ever more extreme. We know they are the biggest group of home owners.

I actually like the look of Starmer's action points. It's broad but succinct enough to be worked on and I think I see the old New Labour way of linking up policies that will work together and they definitely have their finger on the pulse of the concerns most of us have. The observer of the class vs the bully.

Yes. I can believe that.

Re: labours action points.

There is some interesting stuff in there.

I have no idea how he's going to get 6500 new teachers (?) and I see he's back tracked on capping bankers bonuses?

I'm pleased to see asb on there as I'm currently dealing with a very distressed family member who has been subject to pretty much constant asb for 2 years from a pensioner

I think most people could get behind at least some of those points?

Keegan is struggling this morning

x.com/Haggis_UK/status/1791000392454516930

Charlie Stayt: What evidence have you got that something inappropriate was used for under 9-year-olds

Gillian Keegan: "Choosing lots of different sort of genders & identities & seeing which ones of these are gender identities... the spectrum.. there are 72.."

She was talking rubbish on radio 4. She said parents need to see what is being taught - does she not realise that's already in place and has been since mine were at primary? Plus the changes she was talking about made it clear she has no idea what has been on the curriculum re sex education for years. She's useless.

BIossomtoes · 16/05/2024 12:43

But don’t you know how fucking hard she works?

Bigcoatlady · 16/05/2024 12:43

Agree on Barry Gardiner but some dipstick at CCHQ thought today would be a good day to show Rishi is a man of the people by letting the Loose Women loose on him. I can't watch...

Bigcoatlady · 16/05/2024 12:45

Aaargh sex ed - it's their own statutory policy from 2020. All schools must have a sex ed policy available for all parents to see specifying what content will be taught at what ages. The thing that changed then is parents could no longer opt out. Its this flipping parliament and they are already flip-flopping because....?

Rishi on LW? What a joke. Not that I ever watch it anyway but surely that will kill their viewer figures?

How will they keep Richie Rish from the great unwashed for 3 weeks of an election campaign ?

Obviously they'll pump him up for the televised "debates" (they aren't) which is a controlled environment.

But having to meet people ?`

I didn't realise our PM is actually an inflatable, but it explains so much. And I have just had an 'Airplane' flashback.
