Your data is safe with the Tories, oops

Did anyone else just get this email, ostensibly from CCHQ, which has CCd rather then BCCd its recipients and thus shared hundreds of personal email addresses?

All the kids in my son's school here in Sweden have their own ipads and access to the latest educational tech tools. Matters not a jot if 'Jens' isn't in as none of the other teachers have a bloody clue how any of it works.

Yes, our primary had some and the kids had basic coding lessons.
As far as I am aware most schools now rely on computer packages to reinforce information - quizzes or whatever for each topic for homework is often on computer rather than hand written essays these days.

You'd think this would be cutting red tape and making the education sector more equal across private/state but the gov cuts to state have kept the gap. There are plenty of additions to be made to the state, as I say giving back what was taken over 14 years as well as plenty of things to improve (clearing asbestos, increasing SN etc). I do wish Labour would tell everyone what else they plan to do for state education rather than take a relatively small amount out of the private sector which could have a knock on effect, and then not tell anyone what they intend to do with that money. Grammar schools seem to be being ignored, despite having selective practice and almost non-existant free school meal students - the impact of 11+ on kids and the preferential treatment within the state sector should be far more debated than it is. Look at the schools their kids go to, hardly your average comp!

Blair was the PM when I had my horrendous birth experience in a not fit for purpose maternity unit, so I’m a bit sceptical that Labour has any kind of magic wand for that. Improving pay, staffing and morale will undoubtedly help, though.

No health system is faultless, having enough well trained staff, equipement and beds is fundamental though....

Sunak and his party have made sure that isn't the case and as these issues were identified over 8 years and also by Jeremy Hunt himself, its very clear that the tories have no interest in improving matters, they also gave us Brexit so we can no longer attract equivalently trained staff from Europe.

Was Sunak's speech sponsored by PolicyExchange? Their logo seems to be everywhere - wonder how many of their donors have fingers in the AI pie as well as fossil fuels.

There was some wally on here last year suggesting AI will fix healthcare and farming and therefore we didn't need to further invest in either. Totally overlooking the fact that in both sectors there will be a long delays before any changes will make a material difference.

Yes, I agree. Hope Labour will do something about it, as I’m positive the Conservatives won’t.

You have already given the scheme more time and attention than the government.

I've had kids in both the English & Scottish educational systems in the last 5 years. We moved from an English Academy grade 4 'inadequate' (zoo) to a Scottish High which is one of the 20 best performing in Scotland (both kids are ASD & both very Dyslexic, 1 is selectively Mute & the other has hearing probs)

Here, all kids have iPads. But, the isues mentioned above affect them daily (lack of charging, poor quality of material accessible, mass password changes by LEA, staff not trained to help). Scotland has just made John Swinney First Minister - he was the Education Sec during lockdown when the provision was so awful that a Vote of No Confidence was held. Plus, Scotland has withdrawn from International educational league tables as it was doing so badly.
So, shiny new 'toys' / 'AI' is not neccessarily the answer, Mr Sunak.

Repair buildings that are falling down (looking at you, Gillian Keegan)
Give kids that need it FSM (all year). SEN assessments & support.
Train teachers & TA's. Provide enough of both.
Supply the School with enough books, stationery, equipment.
Provide thorough education in Computing from Primary to 6th form
(our 'top School' doesn't offer Computing AT ALL - kids have to be bussed to local college for patchy provision)
Then you can come back & speak to me about 'iPads & AI'.
Atm that is Sprinkles on a non existant cupcake.

lack of charging,

wireless charging is hardly cutting edge. And any initial outlay is recouped in weeks by simply not replacing lost/damaged cables - plus damaged iPads from damaged cables

poor quality of material accessible

You're on your own there. But that isn't a technical problem

mass password changes by LEA

Who on earth is using passwords in any large estate in 2024 ?

Not sure if you are offering that as proof of something or not.

Quite aside from the wasted time and money in service desk calls, there is the ever present risks of phishing and social engineering.

I see the BBC is very coy (none of their "explainers" here) about the NI Rwanda ruling effectively making mainland UK residents second class citizens in their own country.

I guess given world events, that's probably wise.

DuncinToffee · 13/05/2024 14:56

Was Sunak's speech sponsored by PolicyExchange

It's hard to think otherwise

It has also been pointed out that the crest is meant only to be for state announcements, not political broadcast

Here's a thread explaining that he's basically telling the dodgy opaque funders of the policy exchange that he'll do their bidding (i.e. selling the country to them) so they don't have to replace him.

I see form Sunak's speech that Labour are the doomsayers, whilst he used words like 'war' and dangerous' repeatedly.

And that the new 'but Jeremy Corbyn' in 'but Natalie Elphicke'. Des that mean Corbyn is now OK??! Because apparently it's Schrodinger's but.

You asked who on earth uses passwords on a large estate so I said Retail Banking does. Used several at work today.

Last two roles I had I got rid of passwords. It wasn't a hard sell.

British banks being behind the times. Who'd have thunk it ?

Piggywaspushed · 13/05/2024 15:58

What does one use instead of passwords, out of interest?

SerendipityJane · 13/05/2024 16:05

Piggywaspushed · 13/05/2024 15:58

What does one use instead of passwords, out of interest?

Device specific passcodes (as explained in the article I linked). Not a silver bullet (because nothing in anything is a silver bullet) but a step up from a fixed password. Reduces the effectiveness of phishing (since you never reveal your passcode) and also can be tied into a more holistic authentication landscape that supports all sorts of clever protections - but more importantly allows the user to reset access themselves without calling a helpdesk. Which is where a lot of password-sniffing happens.

Passwords are shit. They have always been shit. They will always be shit. The lack of an RFC or ISO or even BS on password complexity or length tells you all you need to know about how important they are viewed. There are more standards and regulations around my shoelaces.

SerendipityJane · 13/05/2024 16:15

For some reason, the Trump trial pushing Rish!'s "announcement" off teh BBC top slot has amused me.

Looks like he picked the wrong day to make an announcement ...

countrygirl99 · 13/05/2024 16:59

I would be very happy to get rid of the 20 different passwords I need but all the 3rd party platforms I access at work use them too. The ones I particularly hate are the ones that have to be changed every month but I only use 4 or 5 times a year so I need to faff around changing them every single time.
