Weird things you love that other people think are awful....

I have two:

One:
Our dog has started getting up at sometime between 5am and 6am every day.

Me and DP have started sleeping in separate bedrooms so her early wake-ups don't disrupt both of us.

DP complains vigorously about the whole situation.

I secretly love it.
I love sleeping separately from DP.
I love waking up with the dawn.
I love having a brew in the early morning when it feels like the rest of the world is asleep.
I love early morning walks with the dog when the streets are empty.
I love having long mornings when I can get all my jobs done before 9am.
I love feeling like I've woken early so I deserve extra tea and biscuits.

Having said that, I really hope its only a summer thing. Five in the morning on a cold, wet January morning isn't so appealing.

Two:
I do a personal training session in our local park twice a week.

I love it when it rains. I especially love torrential, hammering rain. Its cooling and refreshing. The park empties and I feel a wave of optimistic isolation come over me. I feel powerful. I feel dedicated. I feel strong. I feel completely alive.

Last night I got caught in a thunder downpour and it was wonderful.

What awful things do you love....

Any form of inclement weather, the more dramatic the better.
Snow is the optimum, especially the chaos it causes. Having to stop going about our daily lives for a while.
I even like the slush left behind.

Dark evenings.....I think I have the opposite to SAD. I much prefer Autumn and Winter.

I generally love the feeling of being cosy inside my house. Find that sensation difficult to replicate in the Summer months.

Untangling badly knotted things, from jewellery to string things.
Crispy fat/skin from meat and fish.
Picking out things stuck in my teeth with a tooth pick/tiny brush combo.
Cleaning my toastie machine. Wooden skewer, soapy water and a little scrubbing brush, until it looks brand new again!
Chipping the ice off my chest freezer, when it's preventing the lid shutting properly. It only builds up round there, but I love getting my wooden spatula on it and chipping away!

Graveyards and old churches.
Love reading all the odd names and little inscriptions on the tombstones.

Graveyards at night are lovely and peaceful, I’ve never been worried in one.

Am not a vampire, honest!

Totally agree with this. See also: January. I enjoy the calm and restraint after all the excess of Christmas. Back to work, soup and healthy food, very little booze etc. Tuesdays and February are the worst though.

agreed. Tuesdays and February!!

I really like super boring jobs at work.

i feel like it gives my brain a rest 🤣🤣🤣

I work at a print and publishing company and often help out doing the “boring” packing and finishing jobs in the production room. My favourite is laminating the large sheets of card for business cards or etc. the radio is on in there and I love to spend a nice hour shutting off from everything and having a chill. Grin

Disturbia81 · 08/05/2024 09:00

I love January too, the freshness of a new year after the madness of Christmas. It helps that I love dark days and cold.
Part of loving the dark and cold is that it keeps the world quieter.
Also love graveyards, I would happily sleep in one. So peaceful with the dead.

MermaidEyes · 08/05/2024 09:05

I love plain bland food. DH says I'd be good in prison 😆

I enjoy the school run

I quite enjoy the school run too, when I just have the biggun. I love the time to just chat and look at things along the way. We walk through a park, past a pond, along a river etc. It's a nice start/end to the day. Dragging the toddler is a bit annoying, but I'm hoping now it's sunny it'll be less of a chore.

This is a great thread :)

agreed. Tuesdays and February!!

Standard Tuesdays would go in room 101 for me 😂 at uni a bunch of us changed our timetables around so we had Tuesdays free, renamed it Choosedays and said it was up to you to choose how you spent it. Those were good times! Now have my week set up so Tuesdays is one of my days with the kids, also makes them more palatable. But yea in a standard working week Tuesdays are ick.

I love all the animals most people dislike- pigeons, rats, spiders, all the creepy crawlies (except earwigs- they can bugger off), snakes, corvids etc.

Disturbia81 · 07/05/2024 18:41

Yes 🖤

I love when me and my kids have nits, pulling the eggs out is so satisfying.

This is getting worse by the minute!

Disturbia81 · 08/05/2024 11:11

@OneWorldly4 😂
This thread is ace.

A really weird onw but using the tweezers to get in-grown hairs out.

After I have taken it out, I like seeing how long the hair was under the skin.

Crikeyalmighty · 08/05/2024 11:22

@Disturbia81 ah- I do confess when my son was a kid I loved a good nit comb session! Disgusting really

desperatedaysareover · 08/05/2024 11:24

I fucking love change. I also pick Bertie Bassett first of all the allsorts. Prefer cold burnt toast. Quite enjoy it when the cat attacks my ankles in his mad hour. I have a complex relationship with my new chin hair, ugly to look at but I appreciate the way it feels. Get a thrill from the smell of the underground. Oh, and small, hirsute men.

Scallops · 08/05/2024 11:30

I love school pickup. All these hundreds of identically dressed children then that nice jolt in my heart when I see mine.

Also love tidying up and any sort of organising.

HaveABlastOfThisMatrix · 08/05/2024 11:49

Ah... early morning dog walks when the streets are almost empty... I love 'em @NutSmeg ! If it helps, I am up around the same time as you, equally enjoying getting my Bichon Frise out the door and to wherever we are going - she loves it too. She does seem a bit more reluctant to get up in the winter, although she still does and we go out in the dark. It's our thing. Tea and biscuits are definitely allowed after all that Grin

Wherearewe2001 · 08/05/2024 11:55

Processed, plastic cheese slices.

I love proper cheese too, but for things like burgers and breakfast baps, it absolutely has to be plastic cheese slices. All gooey and melty, delicious!

Nothing makes me happier than heavy rain at night hammering on my bedroom windows. It is my favourite sound in the whole world.

Ooh I love that too it's so soothing

Taurusenergy · 08/05/2024 12:42

Fish guts !? Oh my lol

Well monkeys do it 🤷🏻‍♀️🤣 I just find it so satisfying finding them and destroying them, and like the grooming aspect. 🐒

Champagneforeveryone · 08/05/2024 14:21

New Year's Day- a chance to just start afresh after the Christmas excesses. Admittedly much better now I drink so much less as well.

Insects - always been fascinated, and I'm a bit bemused by people who screech in terror at a worm or a spider. DH and I are redoing our garden and making very real efforts to encourage insects into it. The fact we live in the UK where nothing is likely to kill us probably helps too!

Like you OP, I love an early morning. I know very few people like this and I'm always treated with a look that says "is everything ok at home?" if I ever mention it 😆

Moominy · 08/05/2024 14:32

Pigeons
Rats

Eating slightly stale wotsits 😬 there's something about the texture!

I love parenting the teenage stage.

Oh, and this one too. I've enjoyed every stage more (I wasn't a natural mother to a newborn)

DS is away at uni now and properly "grown up", but the summer before he went was one of the happiest times of my life. There seemed to be so much excitement and opportunity, and the house was always full of friends and laughter.

IBegYourBiggestPardon · 08/05/2024 15:08

When I was a carer. I was on a dinner call and the guy I was looking after asked me if I could cook fish. Yes I can. He tells me there's is some fish in the kitchen and could I grill it for him. Off I went to find a whole fish, guts the lot and these eyes staring back at me. Thought there's is absolutely no bloody way I can sort that out. It was frozen solid too so there's me thinking oh thank god for that I can shove it in the fridge and someone else can sort that out tomorrow. Oh no just stick it in the microwave was the answer I got. By this point I'm trying to think of every excuse I could not to have to gut this fish, but in the microwave it went and I somehow managed to plate up about a half of the fish. Once was definitely enough for me!
