Surely this is just human nature or has everyone become unkind

Went to see challenges at the cinema it’s obviously a longish film over two hours. Once it had finished there was a massive queue for the toilets as I think another film ended around the same time. A young woman entered the toilet clearly overtly desperate for a wee legs crossed etc. I said the poor girl could obviously go in front of me only for the woman behind me to get very cross with me. Surely it’s just human nature if you see someone more in need you help? Like if someone was starving hungry I would give them my food even if I was also hungry.

How do you know the girl wasn't putting it on just to try and jump the queue?

Kalevala · 05/05/2024 19:17

While I don't approve of the verbal abuse, I can understand why the woman felt frustrated. The queue jumping woman was selfish to assume her need was greater than others, she should have declined your offer.

She was on the verge of tears etc. also wasn’t even using her phone or talking to her friends.

Honestly you can't tell by looking at people. Depending on the cubicle amount 20 people would take ten minutes or so, if she's waited that long I'm sure she could have waited for her turn.

You seem fixated on this one woman and her needs, which caused you to disregard the other 20 women.

This. Its strange to watch and I'm very familiar with autism. The woman very likely shouted because she was needing to go to the toilet too. No one would wait in a queue of 20 people if they weren't desperate enough to wait until they got home /to a restaurant/wherever they are going next. A lot of people don't like public loos. So OP, every single one of those people queuing would have really needed to go.... And you took their decision away from them. You made them all wait longer. So you will have people rightly angry at your arrogance to do so. I'm not posting this as a criticism, I'm trying to explain to your black and white thinking how wrong you were in a way you'll understand. I hope you do understand, because it's very odd to focus on one woman whose behaviour you 'recognise' as signalling she's desperate... When in fact, ALL 20 in the queue were

Kalevala · 05/05/2024 19:28

I know someone who would put on an exaggerated act to manipulate people. Then if there was pee on the seat they'd be magically fine to wait for the next one.

I wouldn’t say everyone who uses a public loo is desperate. Especially as she was about to cry and I could see how relived she was when she came out.

I’m also not fixated on her I just saw she was upset which made me feel bad if anyone else was on the verge of tears I would have let them skip to

Personally I’ve never come across people that would manipulate just to use a toilet

Why based on behaviour? Behaviour does not equal need.

Some people are in the habit of exaggeration everyday. Natural actors. It gets them what they want.

1AngelicFruitCake · 05/05/2024 19:40

I think you being generous would be giving her your place and going to the back yourself, you didn’t want to be that generous but expected everyone to wait an extra few minutes because you decided they should.

It’s not just to use a toilet - it’s to go onto wherever she was going without being delayed by a queue.

But you have. As 90% of 8 pages of people explaining to you. You keep arguing as if you still think you're right.

Try and think of me and every other poster who has said what you did wasn't kind to US as the people in the queue behind you and we are all telling you you were being unkind to us because you took our decision away. Your judgement doesn't trump other people's.

AsYouMightBe · 05/05/2024 14:17

The OP was at liberty to inconvenience herself and not everyone else by giving the desperate woman her place and going to the back. Big difference between doing something nice yourself and expecting everyone else to give their breakfast to the Hummells.

hahahaha

Well I would. So try and listen to that and respect the difference.

It doesn't mean I'm right. But it's an equally valid assessment and should help you understand what you did.

I genuinely can't think of anyone I know that would use a public toilet if they didn't have to

LadyHavelockVetinari · 05/05/2024 19:44

How was challengers, worth seeing?

I’ve literally said I wouldn’t do the same thing again how is that saying I’m right? If I thought I was right I would say I would do the same again I wouldn’t. I just don’t agree with people saying a woman who was clearly in need wasn’t.

Because I just feel you must feel pretty desperate and in pain to cry

Definitely was the best movie I’ve seen all year and I see a lot. Was different from what I expected though.

Because of posts after that with 'yeah but.... Yeah but... Yeah but....'

I'm glad you wouldn't do it again. But you're arguing like you still don't understand exactly why it was wrong, which my post was trying to help you understand

No I just think people are wrong for saying she wasn’t desperate. I know I shouldn’t have let her skip it was something I decided based on the emotions I felt at the time

I'm not saying she wasn't in need, I don't think others were saying that either. She may have been exaggerating her need, some people will cry over anything. Or she may have been desperate but others in the queue may have also been desperate. Acting like a cartoon character who needs the loo does not equal greater need.
