Mine was Ghent, and yes I would but I wouldn't go out of my way. I think you would run out of things to do/see very quickly!

@IamaRevenant

Go on, say it 😁

I went for a week with the family and kids. It was abit quiet for me, although we stayed in the residential area rather than touristy. But we enjoyed it.

Where else would you recommend that is nicer?

BebbanburgIsMine · 25/04/2024 17:56

@Crikeyalmighty

It is just stunning, as my username suggests I'm a huge Last Kingdom fan, I've been to Bamburgh before, with XH, but couldn't really enjoy it.

Going last year, mainly to see the Last Kingdom exhibition was a dream come true for me, it was the first time in my life that I'd gone anywhere alone, and could just go at my own pace, do what I wanted to do, eat where I wanted, it was just amazing.

As a single and skint single mum a few years ago, it would have just been impossible, circumstances change however, and so excited to be going back!

@BebbanburgIsMine you deserve it lovely- sometimes I think certain places can be best enjoyed alone!!

Haha it's just notorious for stag dos and drunken British people getting into states. Sounds like you went to a nicer bit!

I would thoroughly recommend Lagos for a beach holiday (also a lovely city with a lot of history/museums etc and the best snorkeling I've ever come across!) or Silves for a more city experience. There are lots of other places but might be a bit far from Faro airport or a bit remote... Gale is my favourite beach but I think there's only one hotel near there.

Malaga - wouldn’t go back if you paid me!

Just got back from Malaga and loved it. Hot enough for April (20-21), old town is pedestrianised and lots of great places to eat, lively safe atmosphere on the weekend. Took 15 minute bus ride to local beach every day, chilled out and ate more nice food. Stayed in a central Airbnb. Short flight time. Avoided touristy stuff but there was a castle/ cathedral/ art museums. Not as cheap for wine/ beer as other bits of Spain but not expensive.

Fuerteventura a couple of weeks ago. Would go back in a heartbeat, it's a lovely island.

MrsPatrickDempsey · 25/04/2024 18:33

I did an impromptu city break to Bratislava. What a gem!

Berwick upon Tweed and we're going back this year! I love that bit of England and we can usually get decent deals because we live in Scotland so the school holidays are a bit different. We've been to different bits of Northumberland about twice a year for ages and never get fed up of it, loads of lovely beaches and little towns and castles and all that.

Last trip was a weekend to Bath/ Cheddar Gorge. I would go back, not least because the caves were flooded and I would like to see them!

That was similar to us, stayed near the Cheddar Gorge. Loved Bath and Wells, Glastonbury was good for people watching. Not keen on Cheddar (have been a few times) it's getting a bit tatty in my opinion although i would recommend the Thai restaurant.

Thankyou @Crikeyalmighty FlowersFlowers

Philandbill · 25/04/2024 19:12

Cologne and I would go back but there are other places I'd rather go to first.

ElizabethVonArnim · 25/04/2024 19:12

Koroni in Greece, yes, in a heartbeat. Before that Carvoeiro in the Algarve, absolutely effing not.

Bearpawk · 25/04/2024 19:14

Rome, I absolutely loved it. Gorgeous food, everything in walking distance, visited out of season so no mad queues and the sun was shining. Would go back in a heartbeat but there's other city breaks on the list first.

JoJothegerbil · 25/04/2024 20:33

Krakow about three weeks ago. Beautiful city, would definitely go back.

Crikeyalmighty · 25/04/2024 22:42

@rhinobaby yes I was a bit baffled by that too- I love Malaga - mind you I feel that way about Barcelona because both times there I've had attempted muggings

MountCaramel · 25/04/2024 22:54

Istanbul, been there 6 times already and I never get bored or see the same thing twice. It's absolutely huge so there's plenty of things to do.

ZenNudist · 25/04/2024 23:01

Alsace region of France and Germany (&Switzerland, Basel). Will absolutely go back. Really want to stay in a place with a pool near vineyards in the summer and see some more pretty places on the wine route.

This time was city break strasbourg Freiburg and Colmar as well as Europapark. I barely saw Freiburg and Colmar so will definitely revisit. The dc love loved Europapark so I might go back but there are other theme parks I want to see first.

Hi, can i ask where you stayed? We were meant to go but covid cancelled it so it's still on the to do list.

I went to Bacolet Beach Club, on the south east of the island, near Scarborough. It’s a small (70 room) boutique hotel on the top of a cliff, with fabulous views over the sea to Trinidad, and steps down to a private beach. Absolutely lovely. I think of all the Caribbean islands I’ve visited, Tobago is the least touristy and most unspoilt - the beaches on the Caribbean side are stunning, the interior is very mountainous and covered by rainforest - it’s just beautiful.

BIWI · 26/04/2024 10:06

We stayed at that hotel a few years ago @abbey44 - hopefully they've had a bit of a spruce up, as it was very tired/shabby/run down then!

Crikeyalmighty · 26/04/2024 10:39

@MountCaramel another of my real favourites!

I saw that comment a bit in the reviews before I went, so I did wonder what it was going to be like, but it’s not like that now. I’ve been to fancier and more slick hotels, that’s true, but I think what I really loved about this hotel is that it just feels completely welcoming and comfortable in a really relaxed way. The staff are lovely, the food (and cocktails) were excellent, and I came away feeling totally rested and refreshed.

NeedthatFridayfeeling · 26/04/2024 11:27

Thanks so much @abbey44

Annecy in France. Beautiful place and we do plan to return.

The coast is spectacular up there - Slains Castle to the south is worth a look (watch out for the cliffs though) and further north you can go and see the Local Hero film locations.

How accessible are both ways on public transport (and for someone with mobility issues)? DH drives for a living so we're leaving the car at home and just heading up on the bus. I'm ok with walking around as long as I can sit down fairly regularly. We're only up for a couple of days as well so need to work out what we want to do. Smile

Neveralonewithaclone · 26/04/2024 13:20

Lanzarote 😂 I've been 11 times. I'm not going back though, possibly.
