I don't understand. the Lords must have known those (limited)reviews were already happening. Why fold now?

Notonthestairs · 22/04/2024 21:14

Nice to know that Tory MPs are on the wine in Downing Street celebrating. Don't suppose suitcases were required to bring it in this time.

Matt Green - not tetchy

Found you all!

Gosh there's a lot of chat to try and keep up with!

Loving the new thread title.

Commons are now considering the Lord’s amendment on the Bill.

DuncinToffee · 22/04/2024 22:12

The Rwanda is safe forever even if a war breaks out bill

Hi, welcome Brew this is the best thread on the Internet in my opinion Cake

It's the only sane place sometimes.

I'm even more of an irritable leftie than usual tonight. I feel sick at the thought of the Rwanda bill passing. Not least because it feels like the beginning of the death of democracy in the UK.

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/04/2024 22:22

I think the beginning started a while ago. Probably about the time of the proroguing of Parliament. It sort of carried on with the Tories removing as much scrutiny as possible. I’m hoping this is the end point and as far as it goes.

BIossomtoes · 22/04/2024 22:25

The end point will be when they’re booted out. Hopefully they’ll totally implode and be out of business for a couple of decades.

HannibalHeyes · 22/04/2024 22:28

On a tangent (and behind a paywall);

"Labour will send National Audit Office to investigate Teesworks if they win election"

That'll be fun!

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/04/2024 22:30

Commons voting on Lords amendment now.

The next vote will be after midnight which advantages Tories, many of whom live in London or have second homes in London. Those living elsewhere will need to catch the last train home and miss the vote.

Terror tactics by the govt to subvert parliament.

Don't all MPs have London residences? Not sure about that

BIossomtoes · 22/04/2024 22:39

I thought there were hotels in London, I’m sure I remember staying in one.

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/04/2024 22:40

Lords amendment rejected 312 to 237

https://twitter.com/PARLYapp

There now seems to be a vote on some sort of committee to be set up and I have no idea what is going on. 🤷‍♀️

L1ttledrummergirl · 22/04/2024 22:46

Bastards.

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/04/2024 22:50

Difficult to see where this ends up? I don’t see the Lords being ready to give up on this point yet.

But it’s the crux of the bill for the Tories. We can say an unsafe country is not and nobody can tell us different.

AdamRyan · 22/04/2024 22:53

I did read there is a limit to how many times they can do this. 14? Hang on til I see if I can find it

cakeorwine · 22/04/2024 22:54

Just checking in

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/04/2024 23:06

I think there’s a thing where the Lords can send the amendment back with the same wording and the commons has to either vote it through or the bill is lost. Double insistence maybe.

Zonder · 22/04/2024 23:13

What a mess.

L1ttledrummergirl · 22/04/2024 23:37

That's what the BBC said as well. What is the point if you are going to capitulate when the going gets tough?

RafaistheKingofClay · 22/04/2024 23:39

We really care about the rule of law. Just not that much. What was the point?

DuncinToffee · 22/04/2024 23:44

I don't know how much more the HoL can do.

Sunak wants this bill, he might as well be associated with it forever.
