Lords will say they had to capitulate to the elected chamber. Then they can watch it fall apart in front of everyone's eyes and say - "look, we were right".

DuncinToffee · 22/04/2024 23:55

Sky is reporting that the bill has passed.

Shame on Sunak

Shame indeed! @DuncinToffee

Kagame will be pleased. If can have the 50million he couldn’t get last week now.

I still don't see how a 1% or 2% chance of being sent to Rwanda is going to deter anyone.... this is the view of the French Police in northern france.

So whatever the merits of the bill or otherwise, the numbers crossing the channel and being stuck in limbo will continue to rise, currently over 50,000 people who cannot work, claim asylum or be sent back to their home country, since the Rwanda policy was first announced.

So what happens to these 50k people?

Nobody seems to have asked Sunak for an answer to that.

cakeorwine · 23/04/2024 07:15

So in theory, those 50,000 people can't apply for asylum here but may well not go to Rwanda. They can't claim funds so are supported in accommodation.

Forever?

Rwanda hasn't capacity for 50k and its increasing.

So i guess what will happen is that they will eventually be given some sort of residency/able to work.

Rwanda isn't an Island, the more able will simply leave.

Zonder · 23/04/2024 07:31

An anonymous Rwandan on the news last night said there just aren't jobs for all these people for a start.

Just when you thought the government couldn't sink any lower.

bombastix · 23/04/2024 08:55

The point about the bill (soon to be Act) is that it is performance. It has long lost any connection to cost, legal obligations or actual outcomes.

Whatever the costs it sets an unbelievable precedent in terms of what a government can do. If you think as I do that the Conservatives are going to lose and badly, then literally they have broken through every last constitutional fetter going to do this. There are not many constraints at all on this elective dictatorship but the ECHR was one.

The supposition is that Labour would not be tempted with a huge majority to do similar in human rights terms. Well it can, and there will be nothing to stop it.

Interesting times the Conservatives are in for.

Such wickedness
my hope is that this incarnation of the Tory party implodes & are wiped off the electoral map & stays out of power for a very long time.
welcome MissMarple if I was any more left leaning I’d fall over.

There must be an ever growing list at Labour HQ of flawed legislation to be repealed in the first week of the new parliament. This must surely be at the top of it and Sunak must know this.

I wonder if it even needs to be repealed, it may be as simple as the Home Secretary directing the department to no longer implement it.

RafaistheKingofClay · 23/04/2024 10:08

Rwanda has never agreed to take all of the asylum seekers. It agreed to 200 as an exchange.

It needs to come off the statute book or some idiot government might revive it in the future.

Jason118 · 23/04/2024 10:19

I'm not completely tribal in my politics and we have only Police and Crime Commissioner elections in my area. But, after the vote yesterday, and on St George's Day, postal votes completed by my DW and I to the theme of GTTO. Fuckers.

Five people including a child die crossing the channel.

It’s heartbreaking and I don’t have the answer but I’m pretty sure Rwanda isn’t it.

Rwanda bill latest: Five including child die trying to cross Channel - BBC News

The deaths come hours after the UK Parliament passes its Rwanda bill, which aims to deter small boat crossings.

MrTiddlesTheCat · 23/04/2024 11:45

The Rwanda bill will increase deaths in the channel. People will be pushed into taking even more dangerous routes or travelling at night to avoid being detained

My Tory PCC candidate sent us one of those disguised newspapers. DH didn't realise it was canvassing (he had left it languishing on the doormat).

I was diverted by the fact that the banner was completely red and white...

Absolutely.

Also, it would send out a message to the Tories, to the country, and to the whole world that this is NOT who we are.
